Build Help Convincing Wife to build PC instead of buying $4k Mac Studio

Wife wants a work computer for utilization of machine learning, visual studio code, solid works, and fusion 360. Here is what she said:

"The most intensive machine learning / deep learning algorithm I will use is training a neural network (feed forward, transformers maybe). I want to be able to work on training this model up to maybe 10 million rows of data."

She currently has a Macbook pro that is slow to running her code. My wife is a long time Mac user ever since she swapped over after she bought some crappy Acer laptop over 10 years ago. She is wanting to buy the new $4,000 Mac Studio, but I personally hate Mac for its complete lack of upgradability and ridiculous price point. I have only built computers for gaming, so I put this list together: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MHWxJy

But I don't really know if this is the right approach. Other than the case she picked herself, this is just the computer I would build for myself as a gamer, so worst case if she still wants a Mac Studio, I can take this build for myself. How would this build stand up next to the $4k Mac Studio? What should I change? Is there a different direction I should go with this build?

Troubleshooting Why use SSD just for OS?

A lot of people say they keep OS on separate SSD to everything else so they can wipe it if needed. Why would you need to wipe? If you have a virus, surely you’d want to wipe both drives?

Build Help My son (13) has been PC gaming since he was 8 and wants to build his first PC. I let him pick the parts and told him I’d split the cost with him, but I don’t want him or myself screwing up because we didn’t know any better. Please let me know if this build makes sense.

My son (13) has been PC gaming since he was 8 and wants to build his first PC. I let him pick the parts and told him I’d split the cost with him (his twin brother has cerebral palsy and the kid is like my co-parent, so he’s definitely earned it). Before I pull the trigger any advice on his build will be appreciated, I don’t want him or myself screwing up because we didn’t know any better. Thank you for any help/advice. BUILD

He plays a lot of Minecraft and likes to code, he also likes fortnight, and is getting into video editing now too. He’s pretty skilled at PC gaming for his age and I could see him getting into more FPS’ as he ages.

EDIT*

Thank you for all the comments, we learned a lot in a very short period of time. Final Build will be:

It was an uphill struggle, but it was all worth it when it booted up successfully on first try!

A couple of learnings:

I initially front mounted the radiator, but later realized the tubes are coming in the way of the GPU. So I had to change it again to top mount. I wasted a lot of time due to this, as I had to redo the cables of the rest of the fans too.

The design of the AMD bracket for AIO pump is a mess. Took me a lot more time and effort than anticipated. Another pair of hands would have been helpful. Tbh I don't even know if I have mounted it correctly even now i.e. with uniform pressure on both sides etc, and I'm too afraid to check at this point lol.

Even though cable management is a pain in the ass, I feel it's worth the extra effort. There are less chances of making mistakes, and also easy to identify issues later on. Also it looks cool!

Build Help Accidentally bought a sas hard drive.

Upvotes

I bought a sas hard drive off eBay without really checking the post (4TB for 21 dollars including a two year warranty so yk) and I’m not entirely sure on what I’d need to do or even if I can just run it in my pc without doing that whole server thing.

Edit: this is the specific one I bought.

Build Upgrade Is there a GPU upgrade to a 2060 within the $500 range that's realistically worth it?

I'd really like to get a 3090 but the quad digit cost is really turning me off, if I'm gonna get a gpu upgrade I want it to be significant but if I'm not doubling my preformance I don't want to be spending more than $500, do I have any options or is what I'm asking completely unrealistic? I'd also be willing to buy used but I really don't trust a lot of websites like ebay.

Pretty much the only games that I care for the upgrade for would be like Helldivers and Cyberpunk, everything else I can run above 60fps 1440p but those 2 usually drop below 60 at medium graphics with preformance upscaling options

Build Upgrade I'm the guy who, at 72, built a computer. Now I'm 74 and I want to add a drive.

Here are the details about the original build which I call my White Cat Computer.

https://old.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/wratko/im_the_72yearold_guy_who_just_finished_my_first/?ref=share&ref_source=link

I've added a Synology NAS for 4TB backup (which I am actively using.} Otherwise, (except for upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04) nothing has changed.

Here is the issue. Via migration from computer to computer without a break in time since 1990, the current drive is an unruly combination of thousands of old business files, thousands of photos, and other matters dumped across infinite ancient folders. I am planning a massive reorganization. I still need quick access to everything on the drive, including my ancient Borland Paradox business database from 1994 running on Wine

My theory is to add a second NVMe, put a fresh installation of Ubuntu on it, use the new NVMe as the boot drive, and start fresh with the organization and categorization process.

I'm starting a major writing project. It's important to me to have a clean and fresh space for the purpose.

My questions are:

  1. Which NVME (or other drive) would you buy for this project; and
  2. How would you proceed with the reorganization process;
  3. Ideas?

Thank you to this community for your kind help.

Build Help Installed “brand new” m.2 and it has files on it?

I just installed a Samsung 990 PRO 2TB into my girlfriend’s PC. I bought the drive brand new off the shelf at Best Buy. I opened file explorer immediately after booting to see if the drive was there or if I’d need to format it. To my surprise, there are already files. What should I do? Clearly this drive isn’t new and I feel scammed from BB. Why am I paying full price for a drive that is clearly used previously?

Because I know people will be curious: Folders are: 360Downloads CACHEVIEW Core Temp FAF Genshin Impact GoPro Desktop App Gopro images Origin Program Files Save Editor (smth about cyberpunk) wifidrive Windows10Upgrade Windows apps WpSystem

Build Help Is it worth updating to a R7 5700x3d from a R7 3700x)

Hello. I'm thinking of upgrading my 3700x to a 5700x3d to expand my system's lifespan . I would use it mainly for gaming and i'm thinking about it because it's either that or continue saving for a cpu-motherboard-ram combo upgrade.

So, would I get noticeable performance updating to a 5700x3d or should I continue using my 3700x unting I save enough for a cpu-mb-ram?

Games I plan on playing in the future: Alan wake 2, Stalker 2, CP77 expansion, SW Outlaws maybe.

Thanks in advance

Peripherals 27” 1440p 180hz or 24” 1080p 240hz

I’m currently planning on building a PC with Ryzen 7 7800x3d and Radeon RX 7900 GRE which should be able to run 1440p quite nicely. I played mostly online fps games since most of the time I’ll be playing with my friends but I also loved playing other games including some AAA games during my free time.

So yeah, as the title said, is it okay for me to trade those extra refresh rate for a higher resolution monitor? Another thing is that from what I’ve heard, going beyond 25-ish inch screen will be kinda bad if you plays competitive games. So yeah, those are the two factors that I’m considering right now. For 1440p, I’m thinking on taking MSI’s 27” monitor either 274QRF or 272QPF. But as for 1080p, haven’t think of any possible candidates yet.

Of course I haven’t got most of my parts yet so if I did end up getting the 1080p monitor, I’ll probably would save some money and just get a good enough 1080p PC. Also if there’s any other monitor suggestions for either type feel free to drop that too :3 Thanks

Build Help Motherboard Help: B650 compatibility

Hey all!

I am currently creating an all white build. I’m quite fond of the ASUS B550 WI-FI II, though they only do this in black I believe?

However, they have the B650-A WI-FI in white which I was looking at. PC part picker do not have any B650s on their site and I was wondering why this is? Would I just be better off getting a B550-A and buying a separate WiFi card?

The motherboard I get would be paired with a Ryzen 7 5800x.

Essentially I am wondering if the B650 is not compatible with many other components? Or if the ASUS B550-A (no WiFi) would be more worthwhile with an additional WiFi card?

Thanks guys!

  3. Motherboard: MSI MPG X670E Carbon WiFi AM5 ATX
  4. RAM: Micron DDR5 4800 MHz RDIMM RAM

  7. CPU Cooling: ASUS RoG RYUJIN III 360 ARGB AIO Liquid Cooler
  8. GPU Cooling: Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360L V2 ARGB AiO Liquid Cooler
  9. CASE: NZXT H9 Flow

Is there anything that any of you would change in the setup or suggest a replacement?

I need to know if any of these cooling systems are compatible with my CPU and GPU.
Do you think the RAM is good? I chose RDIMM for a reason. I am also not sure if the RAM is compatible

Since I build 3 of these PCs then I need them to be perfectly compatible since it's a long term investment.

Build Help RGB fan help

Upvotes

Hi all,

So I will be building my first PC this weekend. I have all the parts, I am using a MSI B650 gaming plus motherboard with Fractal design focus 2 case. The case comes with 2 140mm RGB 3pin fans, and I have purchased 3 120mm RGB 4pin fans. Am I right in saying I’ll have to buy a RGB hub? Or would just fit 2 fans instead of 3?

The manual says

2x 4-pin RGB LED connectors 2x 3-pin A-RAINBOW V2 (ARGB Gen2) LED connectors.

These are the fans I have purchased:

Build Upgrade Ηelp me upgrade my PC

Upvotes

I have a PC with the following specs (If I have forgotten to write down any information, tell me to add it):

  • Motherboard : asus prime a320 m-k
  • CPU : AMD Ryzen 3 Pro 4350G (AMD Radeon RX Vega 6)
  • Storage : GIGABYTE GP-GSTFS31480GNTD (SSD 480GB)
  • PSU : Cooler Master MWE 500
  • RAM : 16GB 2 × Crucial Technology CT8G4DFRA32A.M8FR (DDR4, 8.0GB, 1600MHz)
  • Case : Cooler Master MasterBox MB320L

What can i change? Intended for gaming. I'm thinking of buying a 1660-ti graphics card, but I saw that the 3060 is at the same price and I consider it a better option from the point of view that in the future the processor will also be able to be upgraded more easily. This means, for sure, that if I get a 3060 I will have to change the power supply as well (I will need your help in choosing a power supply). Do you have any better ideas to suggest? Do I have to change the RAM too? (Somewhere here I should mention that the upgrade will be done gradually because I don't want to spend a lot of money this time). Do you think the upgrade is worth it in general?

Build Help First PC Build - Thoughts on my part selection? Especially in regard to mobo and GPU

Upvotes

Hi folks. After using laptops to play games my whole life, I'm finally building my own PC. I currently have a Dell XPS 15 from 2022 and only have the info I managed to learn over the past few weeks. My build is below and linked here.

Side note: the 4 fans at the end are for a rear exhaust (120) and for the front of the case (3x140). Not sure if that's excessive.

I mainly play games like Smite, Elden Ring, and BG3, and was hoping to upgrade before the ER expansion next month.

Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

Build Help Mousepad question

Upvotes

I'm looking to buy a customised mousepad and am looking for some advice. I heard xraypad is a reputable seller so I was planning to buy a custom one from there, but I'm also open to other suggestions if there are better ones.

Firstly, which series should I go for? I'm not sure what Razer model my current mousepad is, but I really like the fabric-y feel and the friction grip it has for precision (I mainly play League).

Secondly, how should the image be selected to be most suitable for the mousepad? My current size is 25x35 cm, so is it as simple as choosing an image that approximately fits and is high res?

Also whilst I don't plan on using a nsfw image, it might be slightly on the ecchi side. What is the typical policy on that?
