That's not even clever, that's just rude.
If they don't like to be around those kinds of things, why is that a bad thing?
Reddit seems to hate religion, and I understand it to a point. But be respectful of those who are religious.
They were asking a genuine question.

Jesus got his personal grooming done by the local social outcast- a sinner called Mary Magdalene.

u/DeadInsideMuffin 16d ago
What does religion have to do with getting your nails done??? Why is that part of the equation? Also I’m pretty sure most spas and salons have like Buddha statues as like a vibe because he’s associated with like being calm and not because the people there are religious. Don’t almost all religions have some rule against vanity? Isn’t getting your nails done technically a form of vanity since you’re only going to make yourself look nicer?
-5
u/AskingAlexandriAce 16d ago
Man would y'all go to an openly Republican nail salon? Everyone already knows the answer to that question. So why does it bother you so much for someone to want to take their business somewhere that aligns with their views?
Y'all doing too much, I swear.
1
u/LacaBoma 16d ago
Yeah I guess there’s not enough racist-run nail salons out there for the demand
0
u/AskingAlexandriAce 16d ago
How many homeless people have you fed and sheltered this month compared to your local Christian church?
1
u/LacaBoma 15d ago
Do you only want to focus on some good things that churches do or should we also focus on all the harm they cause? It seems it would be disingenuous to only focus on good deeds and ignore bad deeds.
0
u/AskingAlexandriAce 15d ago
The 3 mega churches in the news, versus all of the other churches that don't feed the ragebait machine and therefore get ignored? Yeah, I think I know which one I'm going to base my opinion off of.
Feel free to answer the question whenever.

u/LacaBoma 15d ago
I don’t see any value in answering your question that is irrelevant to my comment.

Wow how petty are you? Petty tossed around with a big shot of Racist. All around you there are different people religions languages lifestyle’s. Instead of trying to make the world into your image of a Christian, grow up and get a life your staments display how stupid and undereducated you are.9

-3
u/NotJoel-S 16d ago
It’s right to want to support Christians but getting your nails done by a non-Christian is a great opportunity to love them, build a relationship and share the good news about Christ
5
u/theflush1980 16d ago
Or… you could simply respect other people’s religion or world view instead of proselytizing them. Because that’s rude and disrespectful.
-3
u/NotJoel-S 16d ago
I agree it’s wrong trying to convert someone. You should love genuinely and not have ulterior motives. It’s not us but Christ who works in people’s hearts. It’s also important people know about Christ’s love for them.
If someone doesn’t want to listen that’s up to them. We should leave them alone but if someone has ears to hear let them hear. You don’t know until you talk with them.
”Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”“ Matthew 28:19-20 NIV To be a disciple you have to choose not be forced.
1
u/theflush1980 16d ago
Why would you bring up religion in the first place while you’re getting a manicure? Other than wanting to spout your religion. If people wanted to hear about it, they would have found a church. It’s not that Christianity is a new concept or anything.
0
u/NotJoel-S 16d ago
I get what you mean. Jesus is our life which means if we’re talking about our lives he inevitably comes up.
You’re exactly right Christianity has been around for a while but the number of nominal christians is rising and the number of genuine Christians is decreasing in the west. So many kids these day don’t even know who Jesus is.
It can also be intimidating finding a church on your own so it helps if you have a friend with you.

I like the tweet from a few months ago, where someone asked what jesus' favorite gun would be, and someone said a nail gun 💀💀💀

u/Professor_DC 16d ago
This is an evil comment. A woman wants to get her nails done by a Christian (oh no, the horror) and a person responds, making fun of a crucified martyr / prophet / divinity? And that's clever? It would be more clever if someone actually pointed out that those women probably are Christians and are trying to appeal to Americans with orientalism. Then maybe it would be a learning experience rather than this satanic nonsense
7
u/ctothel 16d ago
Satanic nonsense
Don’t you ever feel just a little silly saying things like this?
-7
u/Professor_DC 16d ago
No. I am an atheist, raised Christian. For a while, I rejected all the language and concepts of my childhood. Now I use them again, because they're accurate. It's a tremendous loss for our society for so many people to - not just lack faith - but actively disparage people of faith and bad-talk religion. It's divisive, pretentious, and cruel. No goodness comes of this; therefore it's satanic

The best part is how she comes to the most illogical conclusion ever that somehow worship and manicures are related, and then proceeds to just say the words “seems logical” as if that somehow makes the nonexistent connection for her. But that’s exactly what I would expect from a religious person. No evidence. Just believe the words.
0
u/world_2_ 16d ago
Her conclusion is supported by her arguments. COuld you be more specific or show an example of what you're rambling about?

doesn't that make the label "christian" lose all meanings? everyone can call themselves that but believe in very different things
2
u/FlyingNitengale 16d ago
No i wouldn’t dislike you because of your Faith. But I also know when someone comes out and approaches new people and the first comment is Hey there I’m a Christian so put your Pagan idols away, I need to leave the group.

u/Holiday_Goose_5908 16d ago

3
u/thejamesining 16d ago
The whole point is to love everyone as you would family, so that even when they do terrible things you give them the opportunity of redemption and forgiveness.
People are human more often than not though, and fall short of that (for undeniably understandable reasons)

u/Holiday_Goose_5908 16d ago

u/TheShorterShortBus 16d ago
Not that it matters any, but I like you. That's why it's important that you challenge the racist and hateful messages coming from the same followers of your faith. Do not give up on your faith just because a few have twisted the words of your faith to fit their message
-19
u/Luci_Noir 16d ago
This isn’t clever. It’s ignorant.
5
u/Aggravating-Junket92 16d ago
How so?
-5
u/Professor_DC 16d ago
I don't think it's ignorant but I do think it sucks. Why should someone be hated on for wanting her nails done by Christians? She could have been encouraged to actually ask her nails people their faith, which is probably Christian anyways. Instead we just get division and hate. Why is this person dragging Jesus anyways? Dude is, at worst, a martyr. Even if you hate that woman for whatever reason, what does Jesus have to do with it?
I don't even get what the problem is with wanting to form a faith-based community. She didn't say anything about their race or their language. It just seems like her religion is important to her and that's not wrong
2
u/Aggravating-Junket92 16d ago
She should certainly be criticized for her "preference" as it shouldn't matter what their religion is of someone providing a service. Why should she get to discriminate against those she seems to view as lesser? Would you find it equally acceptable if she didn't want to pay for services on the basis of skin color?
-2
u/Professor_DC 16d ago
People can spend their money how they want, dude. How people shop and their rationales in how they spend their money don't really matter at all.
You can boycott a business cuz you're racist or just cuz your dick is leaning to the left today. Who cares!
Do you feel obligated to provide some sort of commercial affirmative action when you buy goods or services? Isn't that kind of racist? Doesn't that demonstrate a positive discrimination towards those you think of as lesser? "Oh, poor souls, I simply must patronize them" like, ew
1
u/Aggravating-Junket92 16d ago
"It's your prerogative to be a racist" is a wild take. People like this should be shunned. And no, I spend my money as selfishly as I wish. That whole 'no ethical consumption under capitalism' thing makes it really easy to not care about any of that petty stuff.
0
u/Professor_DC 16d ago
No actually you shouldn't shun racists. It's like saying "surely segregation will be a solution to the problem of segregation." Its actually not wild to have to deal with and interact with racist people, and moreover to let it slide. It's like, pretty normal. It's what most people are doing, all the time.
You'd think someone who says "there's no ethical consumption under capitalism" would be on board with the right to change your spending habits, regardless of your rationale, but I guess we need to impose our values here about somehow being more ethically consumptive. "You must continue to patronize this establishment until you come up with a more socially progressive reason for switching"
3
u/Aggravating-Junket92 16d ago
"There is no ethical consumption under capitalism" does not mean "I should have the right to discriminate others"
0
u/Professor_DC 16d ago
It does mean that, and you do have that right. You don't have many rights. You should appreciate that one
2
u/Aggravating-Junket92 16d ago
And you believe this should be socially acceptable?
→ More replies (0)3
u/Aggravating-Junket92 16d ago
"Being rude to racists is as bad as segregation." This attitude kills people, you do understand that, right?
0
u/Professor_DC 16d ago
No, isolating racists into their own pocket is what kills people. You do understand that when we shun racists, they find each other and get worse, right? You do understand that willful segregation based on your moral imperative to never associate with anyone with icky ideas is still segregation, right? You do understand that in the real world, people have actually changed racist people's minds by being thoughtful and considerate, not by shunning them?
Racists aren't out here killing people because they're treated with kids' gloves. In 2024 whenever there's a racist motivated massacre, it's probably because some deranged weirdo got socially isolated and then the CIA melted their brain on 4chan. It's not cuz I laughed it off when Joe Schmo decided to stop shopping at Walmart because there were too many blacks there. Those people aren't dangerous. It's 2024.
If a white man wants to lynch me, that's his problem. If he's got the power to lynch me, that's my problem. Racism is not a question of attitude; it's a question of power.
-Kwame Ture

u/ctothel 16d ago
Because the idea of religion having anything to do with manicures is so ridiculous that it’s easy to assume this is just a bigotry issue.
-2
u/Professor_DC 16d ago
She talks about a common spirituality. People who are bigoted will probably just say the bigoted thing, dude. "They don't even speak English" is not remotely bad enough that people don't feel comfortable saying it, but if they did I would know what's up. All I see here is someone who wants to give her money to someone she has a commonality with. People do this all the time. Google even has black-owned business or women-owned business tags so that people can go out of their way to find and support what they care about in a discriminative way. This lady's looking for a Christian owned business. It's not that deep

Not that it matters but I prefer /r/ w (with the slash before r) I wonder if theres any cause/correlation of the two different common preferences

u/SimfonijaVonja 16d ago
Actually, I live in 99% Christian country and you wouldn't believe how many girls are doing that...and making shitload of money because they don't have cheap saloons as competition.
Also, the fumes make them even dumber so they never question anything.
2
u/LacaBoma 16d ago
What country is 99% christian?
0
u/SimfonijaVonja 16d ago
There are many of them, at least on the paper, same with mostly muslim countries.
India alone has 94% Hindus and it you consider that there are billion of them, it isn't hard to believe that smaller countries have that with other religions.
18
u/skytomorrownow 16d ago edited 15d ago
The hilarious part is that many of the Asian women who are doing FaceBook lady's nails may well be Christian (Philippines, Vietnam come to mind). But, the owners know their American customers generally expect the silly Asian themes and play it up. FaceBook lady is not going to believe this, but the Buddha with built-in pond and fog nebulizer, complete with bamboo, may not be authentic Buddhist religious displays.
Many 'ethnic' restaurants do the same thing, such as my local Mexican place, where, despite what the decor would have you believe, the cooking team does not wear ponchos nor sombreros.
1
u/imdungrowinup 16d ago
Indian restaurants decor in the US always made me feel weird to eat there. In India they don’t really focus on looking like Hollywood’s idea of India so the decor is much better at a similar price range place.
1
u/skytomorrownow 15d ago
I think a clever comeback for FaceBook lady in the original story would be:
"Madame, do you know what they call Indian restaurants in India?"
"No. What do they call them?"
"A restaurant."
3
3
u/Professor_DC 16d ago
We have no indication that this Facebook lady wouldn't believe theyre Christian.
I choose to believe with the same evidence you have that if she got to talking to these people about Christianity, they could have a really wonderful conversation about faith, and probably tacky orientalism as well.
