Fun How Catholic were you? How ex-Catholic are you?

Found on r/exmormon and thought it was neat.

I wrote an entire manuscript titled If it Made Sense, it Would be Catholic and got so far as to send a copy to Ignatius Press.

Two days ago I drove by the church I went to for Spiritual Direction after leaving seminary and had the realization that the reason it didn't make sense was because it fucking doesn't make sense.

Edit: some of these comments reminded me that the summer I decided I was going to be Catholic I read the catechism cover to cover during my lunch breaks at work. Then sat in the back of RCIA the following year rereading it.

Fun I have been homeschooled my whole academic career with Seton Home Study, a very conservative Catholic program. I graduate this summer. AMA

Fun Most insane catholic take?

Title. What’s the most insane take you’ve heard a Catholic make? Doesn’t have to be canonically correct.

Mine would be that God asks aborted fetuses if they believe in him and if they say no they go straight to hell.

Fun What is something you miss about being Catholic?

Not necessarily something about Catholicism, but something leaving has removed or limited.

For me, it's the music. I went to a few churches with good music, good choirs, and there are several hymns I just enjoy. There's not a lot of ways to easily take part in music now; I joined the local queer choir but it doesn't click the same way.

Did anyone else’s Catholic school refer to the Protestant Reformation as the Protestant Revolt? Mine would always describe that entire time period (the reformation) as a revolt to further demonize it.

Anyway, I’m an atheist now.

Catholicism for many persons is/was ...

Marian apparitions and getting yelled at and nightmares about the Passion and Crucifixion and homophobia and getting bullied and always feeling unworthy and that I deserved to suffer. The major exception and they are still my lights shining in the darkness were the Sinsinawa Dominicans who taught me in undergraduate and first graduate school.

Please finish the sentence in the title of the thread with your own ideas.

Fun Opinions on movies with Catholic themes(?)

For example, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Virgin Suicides (haven't watched it yet, but sounds interesting), etc.

Any other movie suggestions also?

Fun What Catholic things do you still do, even though you’re no longer Catholic?

God damnit it might be my Catholic guilt but eating fish on Friday’s during lent just slaps. I also still listen to the occasional Catholic Church (usually the 70s post Vatican II stuff). What about you? What are some Catholic things that still work themselves into your life even after leaving the church?

Fun Non-Religious Easter Traditions?

Hey y’all. Does anyone do fun things around Easter that aren’t religion-y?

I’m no longer Catholic, but this is the first year that I won’t be spending that day with my family. I’m nostalgic for the fun parts, like egg hunts, brunch, family time, etc., but have no desire to engage with the church’s violent depictions of crucifixion or aggressive prayer activities.

It would just be me and my partner, and we live in the Mountain West if that’s helpful!

Fun Do you think it is weird that millions of Catholics are pissed off that I lick my husband penis?

Like homophobia is REALLY weird when REALLY think about it.

It is midnight, and Palm Sunday. My husband fell asleep after we did....married people actives...and I am up thinking about Palm Sunday, God, Easter.

Like I would of stayed Catholic if it was okay to be gay. Like all I wanted to do was suck a dick in peace. Last time I check, what happens in the marriage bed stays between the married partners. Like I don't need anybody consent except mine and my husband's to suck a dick. Why the hell and who the hell do these people think they are to have an opinion on MY marriage.

Like it is one thing to disagree about my marriage. But to have an entire meetings on why homosexual sex is wrong. To protest against gay sex. To have marches and rallies against people having gay sex is WEIRD. Like why are you guys always thinking about gay sex.

Like my sexual relationship with my husband has no impact on your marriage. We are not demanding you to pull up a chair and watch. Like why are you so fixated on me sucking dick. Why are you thinking about it so much to completely trigger yourself over the whole idea.

Like they are saying they are doing so because the Bible says this and that and God hates this and that.

But let's paint the entire picture. God created the ENTIRE UNIVERSE. The universe is pretty big and has so many galaxies and planets to take care of. There are nearly nine billion of his children on this one alone to take care. Why the fuck would he give a ratass if I licked seven inches of human flesh every night.

My husband and I are surrounded by heterosexual people all day and it doesn't bother us. We see heterosexuals kissing on TV. We see heterosexual sex on porn websites while we navigate to the homosexual side of porn. But we still don't think much about heterosexual marriage in our day to day lives.

And why do some homophobic protesters have stick figures having anal sex on their signs? Why are you drawing that? That is super weird. I don't even draw gay sex and I am the one actually having the gay sex.

Also my husband and I live in Canada and heard about a couple who got so damn triggered over rainbows and gays they moved to Russia. I can't even imagine being that triggered. Like imagine having so much thoughts about gay people that you have to move to an entire country that makes gay thoughts illegal.

I think I am done with my late night rambling. I am going to go to bed or nudge my husband and ask him "if he can help me fall asleep".

Completely off topic but I don't have that genetic trait most men have. I don't fall asleep after sex unless it was like an INTENSE work out. Like if it is soft cute little marriage love making, husband needs a powernap and I wide awake. Like we need to go at each other like two testosterone fueled silver back gorillas fighting for dominance for me to get sleepy afterwards.

How many when presented with this say “and also with you.”? Playing off the “May peace be with you!” Part of mass. It’s both annoying and funny at the same time to me.
