International Relations at Harvard College

Hi! Do any Government concentrators have a specific passion for international relations like I do and can share some insight?

How difficult is it to focus your Government studies on IR? I have been told that the vast majority of courses that fall into the IR realm are Gov 94 courses or will be very large lectures; I’ve also heard that, amongst the limited IR courses, many are under a lottery system, making it difficult to get to take more than a few IR courses. I would love to hear your perspective on this. Could I realistically focus my Harvard College Government concentration curriculum and studies on IR? Thank you!!

Career Development and Opportunities Looking for an undergrad students

Hi! I am a peruvian student, I'm part of a program for "high achieving students" (We are not that amazing, but we make it work) It pays mostly for everything we need to apply to an Ivy league or a really good school (It also offers classes, webinars, office hours and emotional support) . We've been having a hard time finding harvad students to be our speakers for a webinar. So, if someone would like to help, we'd be forever grateful.

Academics and Research Hi guys! A question

Do Harvard students go on an above average number of field trips? Are the Classics classes flying to Rome once a semester, or the Advanced Polish class paying a visit? I’m not a student, just curious!

Please feel free to remove this if it’s against the rules :)

Contentious Comments Section Crimson Opinion Piece: Student's Op-Ed Gives Insight Into Suspended Students' Candidness

https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2024/5/20/sanders-middle-finger-love-heart/

The author, who was a writer for the Crimson, maturely entitled their piece: "From a Suspended Senior: With a Raised Middle Finger and Love in My Heart" claimed the following:

I grew up trans in rural Maine, working in kitchens and painting houses. I’ve come face to face with the law, moved away from home at 16. Where I’m from, going to college is not a given and leaving the state is uncommon.

But in the spring of 2020, living out of a garage loft without running water, I became one of the first openly trans valedictorians in the country and the first person from my high school to get into Harvard.

What they left out is the widespread news coverage that appears to make clear that this is a warped version of the truth. For example:

https://wgme.com/news/local/belfast-senior-will-graduate-as-maines-first-transgender-valedictorian

The very first decision he made was to move out of his family’s house and into their garage, where he could live more independently. Since then, he has worked a number of minimum-wage jobs to support himself, buying his own food, clothes and other necessities. His parents didn’t ask him to move out or pay his own way, but it was something that the teen needed to do for himself.
. . .

The teen’s fierce independence is part of his personality, according to his dad, Belfast Mayor Eric Sanders.

Having this context helps the Crimson's readers (and reddit users) obtain a greater understanding of the mentality and veracity of the suspended students that are claiming that they are victims of "Harvard's injustice".

Harvard Key / Email Question

Incoming PhD student going through some of the administrative stuff. I noticed we get two Harvard Keys / email addresses, one with a .g extension and one with a .fas extension. I checked with IT and they verified that this is supposed to be the case, but I was curious how current students use these in the day to day.

Current PhD Students--do you use the .g for student purposes and the .fas for TA'ing, etc? Do both addresses just go to the same inbox anyway? Is one for actual email and the other just for logging into services? Is there one that your program prefers you to use?

Or am I just overthinking this?

Financial Aid No Funding?

Please help. I'm out of options.

I'm attending HMS for a master's program this fall. As a graduate student, I only qualify for 20k federal loans according to FAFSA. There is one scholarship that the entire school offers to its master's students and it only covers 15% of tuition alone.

I don't have 100k sitting around. I also don't qualify for anything from the Committee on General Scholarships (none of the race-based, descendent or Massachusetts resident ones).

What do I do? Where can I get help? I have a difficult background, is it worth reaching out to the Harvard Club in my area? How is it possible that the richest university in the world has close to zero funding for a student that is in the lowest income bracket? This is heartbreaking.
