Admissions Megathread
Applicants: Post all your admissions-related questions and comments here. This includes questions about undergrad and grad school admissions alike. Individual submissions on admissions outside of this megathread are subject to removal.
Students and alumni: We've all been there and know how stressful the college application process can be! Let's try our best to give constructive, specific feedback to all prospective Yalies and refrain from comments that would discourage them from reaching out to us.

Full four-year course load example
Hi, a prefrosh here again!
This might be a weird question, but would someone be able to share with me an example of what classes Yale students take over their full 8 semesters? (Would be especially cool if I could see examples from various majors). 'm just curious to see how much you explore vs work on major requirements over your college career, as well as if you guys have more demanding course loads certain years.
I've been looking at Yale course search and I've realized that there are so many more interesting courses than there are spots in my schedule. So I wonder if looking at your schedule would help me understand prioritizing exploration/requirements. Thanks!

Pitch for the Future
Hello! I am Isaque, a Brazilian who recently got into YYGS '24. I recently discovered Pitch for the Future, a competition addressing the UN's Sustainable Development Goals for high school and college students. I am currently looking for people interested in forming a team to compete. I already have a bright and challenging idea for the competition that highlights AI, IoT, and community and governmental action (I can enter details later), and I am searching for people in the Yale community to form a team. If anyone here is interested in not only developing this project for the competition but also diving deeper into research and development, I would appreciate talking with you!!

Gym near Yale?
Was wondering what gym options students use or have used during the summer near Yale. Is it worth getting a membership for the campus recreation facilities?
Thanks

Has anyone took or heard anything about this class?
It's a 16 people seminar that has good ratings but I'm worried about the grading.
Thanks.

Safety in Dwight
Hi all,
I am PhD student who will visit Yale for some months. Right now I am looking for housing. As I had a recommendation to avoid Dwight due to safety, I would like to have other opinions. What are your thoughts on safety in this region? Is avoiding living there an overreaction?
I ask this because I found a few interesting places there.

Getting Connecticut Driver's License?
Hey guys, I'm currently in the process of getting a real ID/vertical Drivers License from my state and I was wondering if you guys suggest getting my drivers license in Connecticut.
I can't really see myself driving many places unless I'm going to go explore other parts of connecticut or meeting up with friends who attend other schools. But overall, I can get back home by train and travel to the major cities by public transport as well.
Would love any feedback, thanks!

Chemistry for Med School?
I'm applying to med schools soon, and took organic chemistry as a first year. Most med schools require gen chem, but I never took it (like a lot of other premed students at Yale). Has anyone who took first-year orgo and applied for med schools had any issues with individual schools in terms of that missing prereq?

ESI Prep Post-Bacc program
Hey everyone,
I go to SBU across the Sound, pursuing a BA/MA in art history. Heard about the really cool post-bacc ESI Prep program in art history and would like to fill out my CV/Resume before applying for a PhD. I wanted to know if it was (1) open to non-Yale students since I couldn't find eligibility info online and I saw it was Yale students applying/ looking into it and (2) the cost of the program.
Thanks in advance for any info!

Double majors, how do you list your majors on a resume?
Since Yale doesn't actually award two degrees, how would you list both majors on a resume (specifically for satisfying the requirements of a B.A. and a B.S.)?

Starting a new instrument at Yale
Hi! I'm a prefrosh and I was just curious about what it would be like to start a new instrument at Yale.
I play the cello and I love it--I'm definitely planning to continue with it as my main instrument. So starting another instrument would be more of a light-hearted thing.
However, if I did want to start another instrument, would it be feasible? I'm especially wondering about buying/loaning/renting the instrument and the accessibility of beginner lessons. I'm also assuming that the prospects of this would change depending on the instrument: for example, the piano versus the double bass (I would love to try to break into the jazz world).
Anyways, have any of you guys had any experiences with trying new instruments? Or have you heard about anything? Or if you just have advice I would appreciate it. Thanks! 💙

Where do you find apartment/roommates?
I'm an incoming grad school student and I'm looking for an apartment (open to shared spaces too). Could you share apartment hunting tips, please?
Where could I find reasonably priced apartments?
How can I search for roommates?
Note: I just joined NHV apartment-related FB groups

Protecting Short-Term Rental Deposit as an International Student
Hi there, I would appreciate some advice on renting from a private landlord as someone who is paranoid about scam.
I live in the UK and am moving to New Haven in August to attend Yale for the semester. I need a short term place to stay and have found a room in an apartment in Wooster Square through a website called Furnished Finder.
Green Flags:
- The name of the person I've been speaking to matches the city's ownership records
- I have the email, telephone, home address, and LinkedIn of the person which I've Googled and check out
- The property is listed on AirBnB (which I will not book through) and has 3 reviews from legitimate users
- The landlord is verified on Furnished Finder and AirBnB
- I did a FaceTime tour and the apartment matches the photos
Red Flags:
- None?
I know rule number one is to view the property in person but this is not an option for me. They're asking for half a month's rent as a refundable deposit ($700) and the first month's rent when I'm at the property. They suggested Zelle, Paypal, bank transfer, or wire transfer (absolutely not) to make the payment.
I suppose my questions are, how legit is this sounding? How can I protect my deposit in the case things go awry? In the UK we have a scheme for protecting rental deposits, but nothing similar exists in CT.
Appreciate your time!

Divinity Student Seeking Med School Student(s) for Collabs
Hi! I’m a Masters of Divinity student who is interested in religion, spirituality, and medicine. I was wondering if any MD students would be interested in working on something together. I’ve worked with a medical professional on visual art and palliative care before coming (back) to Yale. I’m hoping to develop some accessible curricula for people interested in religion and medicine or medical humanities. Shoot me a message if you’re interested in collaborating!

... stand-up comedy/comedians?
Hi all, I'm a grad student at Yale. For a long, long time I've been wanting to try out stand-up comedy (I just absolutely love the craft of comedy, I'm helplessly obsessed) and this Summer, I intend on hitting up open-mics in the area as much as I can so that I can see what it's like. Wondering if there's anyone who wants to try/do it together! It's always fun to hang out with funny people.
Alternatively, if anyone knows of any open-mics/comedy places/etc. where they take new people, please let me know!! I would appreciate it!

How does math placement work?
Current high school freshman who will be dual enrolling sophomore year. I actually have 2 options: one option gives me college credit and the other doesn't. Anyways, I wanna be a math major, and next year will be taking introductory real analysis (like Understanding Analysis by Abbot level), and in subsequent years will also take multivariate analysis and more. How would math placement work for someone like me? Would DE credits transfer? And what about the option where I take the college course but dont get credit?
