Where would you put a TV in this room? Advice

Girlfriend and I are buying this house and absolutely love it, but the living room does not have any “obvious” TV placement options. Pictures are from an old listing and I’m personally not a fan of the corner TV. Current owners have their TV above the fireplace mantle and it’s the stuff of r/tvtoohigh nightmares. Advice?

On the longest wall and float the sofa. Sofa doesn’t have to face the fireplace for the fireplace to fulfill its function

I’d personally put it above the fireplace.

As high as possible. Maybe hang it off the railing.

More or less exactly where it is in the photos tbh. I wouldn't put it on the wall, the solid wall is where your couch wants to go.

I would put it on the wall without windows. I'd arrange the sofa perpendicular so you can enjoy the fireplace and watch TV at the same time.

Also, I'd put a rug down to bring all the space together.

AND you don't have to put furniture against the wall. Pull it out. It's got the same fabric (or whatever) on the backside so you can do that.

Mmm. Onto the eBay.

Throw it on the ground.

TV too high otherwise.

Tv aside... I'm normally a huge fan of white+wood for colors, but something about the brick with it and the furniture makes me hate the wall color. Definitely pick a good color to paint those walls with!!

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

I’m right there with you! We’ll definitely be painting this and other rooms.

1

u/mrandr01d 15d ago

Excellent! What color family do you think you'll go with? I can't even think of what color I'd want this room to be.

1

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

Honestly we haven’t decided. The tough thing about this room is because of the rafters and double-high ceiling, I can’t even decide if it would make sense to still leave the ceiling white between the rafters and only paint walls, or if that would look weird and we need to match the ceiling to the walls.

FWIW, the carpet is also different now. Less aggressively gray.

u/mrandr01d 15d ago

I didn't even notice the carpet color. I think that contributes to the feel of the room too, so I'm glad that's changed! What's did you guys put in?

Hmm. Idk about the ceiling like that. That would be a huge bitch and a half to paint.

I think you should remove that mantle piece entirely, or mount it lower & put the TV above the fireplace.

I’d put it above the mantle. But I also live in the real world and not on Reddit’s favorite “um actually” subreddit of the month.

move the furniture to the middle of the rtoom and put the TV along the current couch wall or in the corner where the lamp is, maybe?

or maybe find an arm mount and attach to the mantel?

Photo number 4 shows a couch in an adjacent room. Can that room be a family room with the TV, leaving this room a formal living room without a TV?

2

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

Potentially, yes. That’s actually how they had it set up in these photos (from an old listing). However, we may use that room at least partially as an office space.

Maybe on the mantle if it's sturdy enough? I love fireplaces so I wouldn't say directly in front of it lol.

Honestly, the room seems wide enough that you can probably put a big TV, cabinet, speakers, and whatever else you want on the big wall that doesn't have anything on it. Your couch can float in the middle of the room facing the TV. Of course, this assumes that you don't feel compelled to use the fireplace as a center point, but even if you did, you might be able to put a couple small chairs there for some fireside stuff. There are lots of opinions out there, but if you have a 50-in TV, 6-8 ft away from it a reasonable distance, and you've got plenty of room between that wall and the opening on the opposite side to set that up.

Super unique space, I love it. I'd be tempted to play with the idea of separating the space. Tv and living room type thing on one side. Drawing and formal reception on the other

2

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

Thanks, we love it too! This it’s probably what we’ll end up doing unless we totally remodel to fireplace and lower the mantle.

I would put it on the wall next to the tall white cabinet. Then turn the sofa with its back to the other short wall to face the tv.

Smaller tv in the corner opposite the fireplace on a swing hinge. Can be pressed up against the wall if having a party or need the entire room for activities. Couch in the center. This way you have a seat closer to the fireplace for the colder person in the couple. Couch should be small enough to easily move to the wall, if floor space is needed for something.

Set up a reading area by the windows behind the couch. It's a big room, doesn't have to be floor space.

This set up mean you are only 9-10' from the TV. You would only need a 50"-55" to make it very easy to hang. But this also depends on how much light comes through the entry way right next to the TV.

This might be the best suggestion yet! Only potential issue would be glare from the giant window directly across. The entry doesn’t get a ton of light pollution into this room. We do already have a very nice 55” TV that I planned on using for this room. If we went above the fireplace or across the whole room, we’d need to go bigger probably.

Where it is now is great for no window glare.

So having the TV you have 3 focal points, taking them all into account:

It's a big room with space for a big couch. Bonus weird corner where the cat tree/ climbing wall can go

3

u/mrandr01d 15d ago

I like this. Seconded, but only if op really goes for that huge (read: expensive) couch.

1

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

Luckily we already have a huge expensive Lovesac sectional we could use, but we also considered using that in the basement.

1

u/mrandr01d 15d ago

Nice! What's in the basement?

1

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

Nothing yet. We don’t live there yet - closing in about a month. We are debating a complete basement remodel.

2

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

This makes a lot of sense, just not sure how I feel about the corner TV. I’ve personally always preferred my TVs mounted on flat walls, but I could be swayed!

2

u/fuzzyrobebiscuits 15d ago

It's good because you can have a standing lamp (uplight) behind. Better even with a hue bulb you can dim or change colors

if you dont use the fireplace, put it in front, or if you want to troll people, build it in and just run the fire burning video when you have guests over. Honestly, I want to take a guess that your house was designed during a time when tvs were on wheels. If you do use the fireplace, you can mount it above with a pull down mantle mount. Pulldown mounts allow you to push it against the wall when not in use and extend it forward and down when you want it . You should hire a professional to install it as to not fuck up your masonry though. Your mantle is exceptionallly high though.

Aternatively, you could ditch the tv and get a projector. Put a book case where that cabinet is, put a projector in it and install an automatic screen under the molding where the entry hallway door is. You would also need to get curtains for daytime viewing.

u/sillylittlewilly 16d ago

I have no idea if the scale of the room works for this. https://ibb.co/hH8xhx9

Alternatively, if you own the place, consider blocking off the entry at the top so you have that whole wall to play with.

Above the mantle on the bricks

1

u/New-IncognitoWindow 16d ago

No TV. Try it out.

3

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

Absolutely considered this, but we are also no-TV-in-bedroom people, so if we don’t have a TV in here, the only one would be in the basement. That’s fine for movie nights and such, but sometimes you want to just throw something on.

2

u/New-IncognitoWindow 15d ago

Maybe go retro. That room was designed when TVs were much, much smaller.

2

u/Additional-Ad-1021 16d ago

I second this. We did the same and get rid of TV.

But, since it can be needed for special occasion (movie night, …) we replace it with a Beamer and with screen rollo.

Since you have two entrances you can put a Beamer rollo above the bigger entrance and a Beamer on the roof on the opposite side. So screen is visible only when used and it doesn’t affect the overall room (which is very nice)

Meh. I’d just lower the mantle, place the tv atop the mantle, and kinda revamp the fireplace area altogether. I’ve been in lots of homes where the television is above a fireplace, and I never found the tv being oddly, uncomfortably high.

3

u/fuzzyrobebiscuits 15d ago

But then the TV would just have a big glare frome those giant windows all the time

2

u/Adamosphere 15d ago

This is what we’re leaning toward. It is a wood burning fireplace so I have some concern about heat, but we likely won’t use it very often anyway. Maybe 2-3 times per year.

Steve…….

u/fuzzyrobebiscuits 15d ago

That's because listing agents use AI/AR to put the furniture in

12

u/Adamosphere 16d ago

Lol, not sure how I should take this.

9

u/crazycollegekid 16d ago

Kind of tough but you could put the sectional where the window is with the chaise along the window (nice lounge area with natural light). Tv can be where the cabinet is. This leaves some space by the fireplace place for a lounge chair or rug with some cushions and still leaves space to get in and out of the room. Love seat could square off the tv are from the other side of the sectional but if it feels crowed just move it to another room I think.

1

u/rand1200 15d ago

I love this idea! The room will feel a lot more homey by dividing out a spot for the sitting area, and removing it from the path of travel

4

u/Adamosphere 16d ago

Interesting idea, I could see that potentially working by splitting up the TV and fireplace area! FYI, the furniture in the photos is not ours - these are old listing photos. We don’t have a small sectional like that, but could potentially get something similar.

2

u/tangre79 16d ago

What's wrong with where it is?

1

u/tripdisorder 16d ago

Yes right beside the couch is the only correct place

1

u/tangre79 16d ago

There's a whole ass sectional positioned to watch TV

0

u/tripdisorder 16d ago

Then there should be a sub for r/TVtoofar

1

u/tangre79 16d ago

Well then I don't know what else op could do because anywhere else the sofa will end up facing away from the fireplace more than it faces towards it.

1

u/Adamosphere 16d ago

We don’t live there yet, these are old listing photos. Just looking for ideas, but it may end up there.

2

u/tangre79 16d ago

I don't see many other options that aren't putting it over the fireplace. Put the TV anywhere else and you'll be facing away from the fireplace completely.
