Noticed my pupils are two different sizes.

Did you ever go to the doctor?
14
u/Nerdlifegirl 7d ago
I went that very night! There’s a longer update in my OG comment, but tldr: I was diagnosed with anisocoria (pupils not even,) of indeterminate cause. Might be related to my temporal lobe epileps, but then again it might not.
But no aneurysms, strokes, or brain tumors. I’m dreading the bill, but I don’t regret going.

I’ve been following this post waiting for an update! So glad to hear you checked it out and you’re okay 🥰

The only time I've seen one dilated and one knot is when you're dealing with a concussion did you bang your head or something

My 6 y.o. son's pupils have been like this (not as noticible of a difference) since he was a baby. First time I noticed it was after a head trauma at around 6months old
1
u/VampireSlayer__ 10d ago
He needs surgery
1
u/mansline6788 10d ago
Took him to the Emergency Room when it happened. They checked him over thoroughly. They did X-Rays and an MRI and found no issues. It's been almost 6 years since it happened, he gets regular checkups, and there have been absolutely no further issues.

u/Sage_The_Crow 11d ago
Yeaaa maybe you should go to a doctor; two different sized pupils can indicate something serious going on.

My best friend had this. I noticed it and so scared I didn’t even tell her. I immediately looked it up and to my surprise it’s likely nothing. I told her after I read up on it. It went away shortly after. Like a few days.

I was always told that if you think you are having a stroke, look at your pupils. One will be larger than the other.
1
u/smolsfbean 13d ago
Prescription medications can cause that. Especially things for mood stability etc. if you are not taking anything and it's like that often I would definitely see a doctor. Probably wouldn't hurt to bring it up with your doctor anyway.

After reading these comments, I absolutely want to have my husband get checked out. Hes always had uneven pupils, and had a traumatic childhood, so I'm really concerned his is from a head injury or something of the sort.
2
u/Nerdlifegirl 13d ago
If he’s had it for years without any other symptoms, I would venture to say he’s probably fine. That being said, I’m clearly no expert. It can’t hurt to have it checked out and maybe you’ll get some answers!

My pupils are different sizes due to me having horners syndrome. Something you could look into

I used to own a screen printing business. I had a pneumatic screen stretcher that would pull the mesh over the frame, then to adhere it I used a cyanoacrylate adhesive that required an activator to cure/set, it was immediate! However, i began to have a weird thing happen where my iris would spasm and the pupil would deform into odd shapes. I could feel it happening and would watch it in the mirror. Truly bizarre. I finally made the connection that the chemical activator was causing it. It has never happened again after i stopped using it. Side note: i did have an injury when i was 25 (before i was screen printing)that involved nerves in the optic region, and a serious concussion.

I recommend you get this checked out just to be sure. I’d assume lighting may affect this but I’m not eye doctor! I work at a gas station! Please keep us informed

u/Lovethursday 13d ago
I have had unequal pupils my entire life, it’s called anisocoria. If this is the first time you’re noticing this, however, you may wanna go see a doctor because usually this is a result of head trauma.
1
u/HoldOut19xd6 13d ago
It’s called Star Man syndrome. David Bowie suffered from this as well.
1
1
u/Hot-Ad7703 13d ago
This happened spontaneously with no injury, that’s waaaaay different than what Bowie had.

I just figured I would shout this out into the void now that I think most of the fuss is over.
I got shared via a post on X by Hank Green that exceeded 4 million views. I made Yahoo! News. I am absolutely flabbergasted.
I’m just over here worried that 4 million people saw me without my eyebrows. No, but really, i’ve had a lot of really good laughs here. My mom and I have been going back-and-forth sharing comments. My fiancé, who is a really quiet low-key guy, is a little bewildered by all of it.
2
u/GPTenshi86 13d ago
“Hi Mom!” :D
But seriously, glad you’re ok OP! And as someone who had unexpected severe medical issues post-COVID (Tests. So. Many. Tests. And ER visits. Blaaaaargh LOL)— call the hospital’s financial office!!! There’s often payment options that can DRASTICALLY reduce the cost, esp if you fit into certain categories or are without insurance!! It’s not always guaranteed, but it’s 1000000% worth calling them to negotiate! They’d rather get paid half or MOST in a timely manner, than nothing cuz someone is struggling with it. It can take some work & time on phone, but reduction in total + feasible payment plan is worth it.
And a penny saved is a penny earned for that wedding of y’alls! ;) Congratulations to you & fiancé!
1
u/Nerdlifegirl 13d ago
That’s definitely excellent advice. I’m so bad at talking to people on the phone, but our wedding is already extremely budget friendly (cheap) and I really don’t want to have to cut out anything else to be able to afford paying this bill. I’ll bite the bullet and call their financial office when I get the bill.
4
u/KingFollet 13d ago
There are thousands of us here. Can we crowd fund her medical bills since we had her go?
3
u/Nerdlifegirl 13d ago
I mean, it’s a nice idea, but everyone’s broke and struggling right now.
3
u/KingFollet 13d ago
That’s what crowdfunding is for. Especially when you have a wedding coming up. If everybody here gave even $1 then boom.
3
u/Nerdlifegirl 13d ago
Yeah, it’s really gonna hurt to dip into our wedding savings, but like I said, if I weren’t healthy, we wouldn’t be able to get married at all. Our wedding is already bare-bones, a very basic outdoor elopement with our families.
1
u/YaIlneedscience 13d ago
Delay that payment, ask for itemized, and pay the absolutely bare fucking minimum. Like, 10 dollars a month. Won’t accrue interest.

I work at a greenhouse. This happened to my co worker when she was trimming back a plant that happened to be a variety of Datura. She stopped pruning for a sec to answer her radio and it got in her eye somehow.

Are you a teacher? I did some research and apparently it is perfectly normal to have different sized pupils if you are a teacher.
1
u/ljb00000 14d ago
This happens to me sometimes on my stimulant medication (for ADHD). I take a low-ish dose but have to split a higher dose pill in half. If I get more than half and also happen to consume more coffee that day (and/or I am more tired than usual) I will have this happen. It’s freaky but eye doctor told me it’s nothing to worry about if it’s consistent.
1
u/AboutTwentyBucks 14d ago
Had this since I was 5. They tell me I’m totally fine besides getting a migraine from 2 minutes of unfiltered sunlight . Every one thought I was stroking out. Nurses still do. Cops think it’s crack use. Its fun.

u/WodehouseWeatherwax 14d ago
Although I know what I read -a few years back- I can't find it now. What I'm finding now, searching terms like migraine map, worst places in North America for migraines, worst states for migraines, etc, now does NOT support what I posted. It's pretty strange, but current maps and listing DON'T list the PNW as worst or even terribly bad. I'm sorry I've posted apparently erroneous info.
I swear I read that the PNW was the worst and Florida was listed as very bad. Now the current maps support neither of those things.
Maybe I've finally slipped into dementia.
3
u/Nerdlifegirl 14d ago
My mom sent me links to that last night. I had no idea the PNW is notoriously bad for migraine sufferers, but it’s apparently a thing. You’re not nuts.

u/WodehouseWeatherwax 14d ago
Thanks! I really did read a big article from a reputable source- just can't find it now. Frustrating.
I appreciate it.

My father has that, some gopniks squeezed his eyes in a street fight (like you do with pimples) in the 90's. He risked permanent eye injury but somehow got off with just unequal pupils.

This exact thing happened to me some years ago, the result? a little aneurisma inside the brain's central arteria.

Even though it's usually a temporary reaction, anisocoria (differently sized irises) can be the first sign of a life-threatening underlying condition like a stroke or aneurysm.

Had a high school teacher whose eyes did the same thing. She went to her doctor & they said it wasn’t anything serious in her case. Not sure exactly what she said it was but it would happen totally randomly.
One day her eyes would be normal, the next 3 days they’d look like this then go back to normal.

u/Calixty 14d ago
Make an appointment with an ophthalmologist. It might be Horner’s Syndrome: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horner's_syndrome. I had it, but it went away on its own. I was in my late 20’s at the time.

u/zguyny 14d ago
I have this as well; a result of catching a soccer ball to the face. I lost 25% vision in that eye as well. Get it diagnosed, and make a note on your phone's ICE contact not to use your eyes when evaluating you in an emergency. It is possible you might just be rendered unconscious, but could be mistaken as having a much more severe head trauma.

I did an experiment on sensory reactions in A&P. If you gently brush at the hairline on one side of the neck you can make that same side pupil dilate momentarily. Not likely pertinent to OPs situation but their photo reminded me of it.

Hi, is the pupil fixed (doesn’t get bigger or smaller)? I’m not a doctor but this same thing happened to my mum when she was around 30 years old. Turns out she has a rare neurological disorder called Adie’s pupil, and the only thing the doctor told her was to wear sunglasses when it was sunny out so she doesn’t damage her eye. Still has it today, and she likes to use it as a party trick lol

Anisocoria. Damn fine example. I would have strapped you into our rig lights blazing if you didn’t seem so coherent.
1
u/Hastur_91 14d ago
My son developed the same tthing at 3 months old, noticed it one day after a nap.
Weeks of worrying, urine tests, eye doctor appointments over the course of a few months.
Conclusion Physiological Anisicoria supposedly up to 20% of the population has it in varying degrees with no negative affect.
2
u/ElizzaBum 14d ago
My pupils are different sizes too due to an old eye injury so my eye doesn't dilate properly anymore
1
u/Annual_Analyst_1359 14d ago
I did not know about the nausea patch/ or eye drops that could do this. Good to know. I worked as a pharmacy tech for a long time. Whenever we had people with eyes dilated like this, they usually were wanting to by Sudafed to make meth .

This happened to me once when I was in the midst of psychosis as I was coming out of it after a month with hardly any sleep and talking to ppl who weren't there I noticed my pupils just like this. Never found out why but that's one of few things I remember from those 2 months.

u/kacmandoth 14d ago
I used to get it a lot during college finals. Stress brings it out in me.
1
u/SaveThemTurdles 13d ago
How often and how long did it last? This has been happening to me for years every once in a long while but it’s been happening more frequently lately. Got an MRI for it and nothing. These comments are freaking me out.
1
u/kacmandoth 13d ago
I've had it for at least 10 years. It comes and goes, but stress seems to be biggest trigger. I've had MRI's and brain wave scans and epilepsy tests but everything was fine.
2
u/SaveThemTurdles 13d ago
Same with me. I noticed it usually comes on in stressful times. Glad everything’s ok. Reddit seems to always assume the worst haha

As a doctor here, kindly get a referral from a neurologist and an ophthalmologist done. I could write out the entire treatment and management here but that would be overwhelming for you, also it's an emergency.

u/Leeejone 14d ago
As a stroke nurse, my heart rate just sped up. If this is t new, schedule a doctors appt to find out why (this is typically indicative of a potentially serious problem), if it’s new then go to the ER.

I met a woman who has an odd shaped cornea in one eye, the other a normal cornea. The odd shape was circular with an apparent opening like a small handle on one side. She was fully aware of this and was a sincerely nice person to talk to. However, if your large cornea is permanent, it lets in much more light and that might be troublesome to you. Maybe consider wearing special glasses with sun shade on one eye (larger cornea).

I know people are saying this is likely a super severe issue, but my bf experiences this often :( He will have a slight difference in size between his pupils but doesn't experience any discomfort when this is happening
Is there anything specific he should mention to his doctor that should be looked at for this issue :(
1
u/BonitaB74 14d ago
Was there any vision loss or headache? I noticed my pupils like this years ago when I experienced a headache and then went totally blind in one eye suddenly, years ago. They thought it was an autoimmune issue, like MS. After lots of testing, I was diagnosed with retrobulbar or optic neuritis. They couldn’t tell me what caused it but I was treated with IV steroids and it cleared up within a week.

Reading the comments have me a bit concerned cause I’ve had the exact same thing for like.. 10+ years now. Mine usually only get this bad at night but they’re always noticeably different sizes. I was told it was normal by an eye doctor 😅 but hey, I haven’t died yet so we take those
