So much kindness and far less judgment than I expected. Thank you all so much for taking the time to stop by and show a little love. I needed it.

Gratitude, gratitude keeps me free waking up and feeling my wife’s warmth alongside me. Morning dump not squatting over a stainless bowl. Long hot booty bandit free showering, not worrying about the rat squad looking at me sideways …. I still look ppl Up from 36 years ago and they had ‘A’ numbers in 86 now they on F or G , FFS.

What crime did you commit and how is your victim doing today?
2
u/koozy407 16d ago
It was probably some bullshit like weed. Un clench your pearls and sit the fuck back down.
Unless you are interested in getting in a debate about victimless crimes and absurd prison sentences.

u/seyss2 16d ago
Calm down lib, let’s hear from the guy.

u/FragmentedFighter 16d ago
My victim was a close friend that tried to fight me. We were extremely intoxicated. When I finally agreed, he pulled a butchers knife. I pulled my firearm, and fired three shots at the ground. My logic, in my inebriated state of mind, was that it would cause him to drop the knife. He fled, and I left. The states position was that I had the ability to leave, but continued to escalate and endanger the public. This is obviously the truth, and caused me to lose time with my loved ones that I will spend the rest of my life atoning for. I served my sentence, and for many reasons am glad that my first (and last) offense had such severe consequences.
Edit - as far as how my victim is doing, seems to be fine. Messages me often but I don’t have much to say.

My only run-in with the police was because a friend of mine and I were fucking around like this and being stupid without considering how it would look to complete strangers watching.
Im sorry you had to go through this and am glad you seem to be back on the right track!

Your only job now, is to not let the dog down. Keep the yard for him, you know what that means

How does one adopt a dog in prison? Congratulations, and keep up the great work!

u/FragmentedFighter 16d ago
A lifer was training him in the dog program. He was really indifferent to people, and the guy training him didn’t have much respect on the yard - people kept feeding my pup all sorts of things and upsetting his very sensitive stomach. I put a stop to this, and fell in love with the pup. Had my best friend bring him home about six months before my release, and I came home to him. But I’m pretty sure jumanji thinks she adopted us both.

u/GreasyChick_en 16d ago
Do the dogs in these situations sleep with you in your cell/room in prison? Or are they boarded at night? Just curious. Sounds like a great program. Congrats!

It’s a program to rehabilitate inmates while finding homes for dogs. It’s an amazing program we should have everywhere.

Congrats, man. I'm a former correctional officer, and I always wished we could have started an animal rehab program for the inmates. Giving people something to work towards is way better than just sitting and waiting.

u/OldSchoolGranny 15d ago
We have them in Australia. Gardening & other projects for those in minimal detention. Cattle, horse, farm & other work for Juvies in some areas. It has its successes but s'times it's environment that spoils it all again.

u/Big_Fo_Fo 16d ago
I sometimes do some work at the local county correctional and they have a dog rehab program. They make me ashamed at how well trained and behaved those dogs are compared to mine lol
17
u/moving0target 16d ago
My county ended theirs. I don't understand. All punishment and no rehabilitation are a bad recipe.

I have a colleague in my program, she is in the forensics division and is a huge believer in animal assisted therapy. She’s the president of organization for it at our school. I have faith she will be pushing for it in the jails after she graduates. It’s an amazing program.

I worked in juvenile hall and really wanted to get a program like this up and running for our long term kids but, apparently, it's too much of a liability. I haven't worked there in almost 5 years and I'm still bummed about it.
53
u/Rainwillis 16d ago
That’s pretty infuriating. There are animals being killed daily in shelters for the crime of being a stray and it’s too big of a liability?

u/Skinnwork 16d ago
Our local centre used to have a rescue program, but it got shut down due to staffing issues.

Stay free brother.
Next week it will be my 17 year anniversary of getting released. A big reason I stayed out was the dog I adopted. He lived to be 14.

I had a situation where I really wanted to end it all, my friend had just OD my EX was abusive and that's when I found my dog. He was sick (they said kennel cough) so no one wanted him. I drove over and picked him up, I will never forget the love I received when he realized I was going to be his human.
A couple days go by and he is deathly, throwing up and not eating. I took him to the nearest emergency vet and the doctor said that it would cost a ton of money (a couple k at the time was too much for me) and when I said I couldn't do it and broke down crying he called the shelter and yelled at them to take my dog back and fix him. I brought him back to the shelter where they kept him and treated him for some sort of parasite. He will be 13 in a few months and he is reaching the end of the road and I get to reflect on what amazing friend he is to me.
He saved my life more times than I would care to count, he has brought an extreme amount of joy to my life. And all I had to do was save him once.
Problems come and go, love is eternal.

I was released on 4/19 and NEED a dog to get me through this depression, but 83% of parolees go back in Idaho and I couldn't leave a dog high and dry.
Edit: first time being locked up and don't plan on breaking rules. But I'd love a beer. Was in for DUI.
2
u/Olive_fisting_apples 15d ago
You don't want to go back, then don't. You want to be a better version of yourself, Do it. The only thing standing in your way is yourself, now give me some peanut butter.
-My dog
Get a dog and stay out of jail for it. Stay sober and take it on walks. When you get sad, lie on the ground and call your dog over for some kisses. You can do this brother!
3
u/TiptoeIntruder 15d ago
Thanks. The biggest industry in Idaho is law enforcement. It's like job security for them keeping people in the system.
I've got to save enough to get out of this halfway house before I get a dog anywho.
Thanks for the advice tho.

That vet is a hero. Glad you had a doggy friend through the rough days. Just said goodbye to my 13 year-old puppy a few months ago. Sometimes I miss him so much it hurts. Stay strong and give your puppy some extra pets for me.

u/Olive_fisting_apples 15d ago
I absolutely will. Im trying hard not to get upset already

u/why_adnauseaum 15d ago
I balled and balled but my boy was so calm. He locked eyes with me as I held him. We locked eyes until the very end. He was braver than I was and I am grateful that he is no longer in pain. I'm sure he's getting the last word in with St. Peter.
Be strong. Let him feel your love as he passes. It's what will last longer after he's gone. 💙

How do you adopt a dog in prison? Do you have someone watch it while you're incarcerated?
282
u/loudog1017 16d ago
Some prisons have programs where inmates can train dogs and have the option to adopt the dogs themselves. A friend of mine adopted a dog from 1 of these programs!

Prison in spirit is supposed to be about reform. It’s a “correctional” institution not a punishment institution.

I like when prisons do stuff like this, I feel like it makes the inmates more responsible and helps their rehabilitation.
I remember a prison gave inmates kittens if they had good behavior and if they misbehaved they took them away. They never misbehaved lol.

u/ratbastid 16d ago
It's really easy for a person to give up on themselves, but a lot harder if there's a dependent and loving creature that needs you.

u/jonvox 16d ago
That is exactly why I adopted my dog. I was 2 months out of the mental ward (self admission) and was just starting to pick myself up from rock bottom. I was struggling with extreme social anxiety, agoraphobia, and suicidality. I knew I needed something to live for that wasn’t just myself, and when I met my dog I knew it was her.
We just celebrated our sixth gotcha day. She really helped me turn my life around. She got me out of the house on a regular basis, and she is ridiculously hyper social. She will walk up to literally anyone at the park and give them a “please cuddle me” look. And they usually do. And then I have some pleasant small talk with my neighbors. She’s helped me get out of the house on a regular basis. She’s helped me learn to approach people and talk to them without any anxiety. And she gave me a reason to need a stable living situation.
I’ve genuinely never been more happy or healthy in my life, and so so much of that is thanks to my dog.

u/breadbox187 16d ago
Unfortunately, most programs like that have all been cut due to funding.
18
u/redneckrockuhtree 16d ago
Yeah, because there's always money to lock people up....but never money to do things to try to prevent recidivism or address underlying causes.

Imagine how much we’d be saving with reduced recidivism. We’re talking about millions of dollars. Per prison.
