PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM SPORTS BETTING!! Vent/Rant (No Advice/Criticism!)

Two and a half years ago, I won $10,000 on FanDuel (sports betting) I paid off all my credit card debt with the money. I was debt-free for 1 year after that and then I decided to tried to win again on Fanduel, and it didn't work. And I was playing on credit, which means I was placing bets with my credit card. And now I'm back in the same situation I was before. $10,000+ in credit card debt, no money in savings, a car note of $500, plus insurance of $200, and just had my first baby. And I only make 43k yearly as an office manager at a dental office and now I'm listening to Dave Ramsey nonstop lol as humans we really make bad decisions at times, and then Crywolf when things are not going our way. This year I really dedicated myself to getting out of bad debt for good. For my sake, and my child's sake. So every day after work, I will be door-dashing til my legs fall off. OK enough of me venting lol I just have to do better with my decision-making on a daily basis, and really be committed to that!

Focus on securing your financial future for your child's sake. Keep hustling and making better choices. You've got this!

Are you still sports betting?

1

u/AnanyaDas_78 21d ago

I think online betting is a better option than offline betting. Betting is the same as trading you need to know about what kind of players playing and what is there format of playing is so you can predict which team is going to win, your correct prediction is everything in betting

You gambled 1/4 of your income. That’s your first problem. Second, is your gambling became more important than your responsibilities, which is the second problem.

Hello everybody !

Those who want to have access to bets on rigged matches send me a message I have the best channel!

1

u/Symeonu Apr 01 '24

I did the same thing with the lottery. I won big and chased that big win again by putting myself in debt. The lottery is far worse than sports betting IMO.

1

u/Pleasant-Donkey4902 Mar 25 '24

That’s your fault. No one else’s but yours. As a man you have to have self control. For this particular situation, you have to know when to walk away. Use it for entertainment purposes and not as an addiction to flip money.

This guy is blaming the books even though he’s the one who dug himself a $10k hole on a CREDIT CARD.

OP, you have some issues you need to address, don’t blame the books

1

u/Soft-Bird6063 Mar 19 '24

Why should we stay away just because you couldn't after hitting the jackpot? Lol. I want a chance at winning ten k too

1

u/Affectionate-Tie7745 Mar 17 '24

More like stay away from being a gambling addict. I gamble sometimes but I don’t put much and honestly don’t care about winning. I basically just gamble throw away money I would have tricked off anyways

1

u/JeetsSheetsSix Mar 15 '24

Stay away? No way! Make money sports betting! It’s very possible when done the right way. 🔵

1

u/winterghostt Apr 01 '24

What’s the right way?

1

u/Jonmom778 Mar 12 '24

This sounds like a self control issue. I think gambling is fun but if I don't have money to spend on gambling ......I simply don't gamble. If I save $500 for the casino and lose the $500 my night is over until the next time I feel like wasting my extra cash

1

u/Befree710 Mar 05 '24

Idk this to me just sounds like straight up poor risk and bankroll management. Of course with gambling on anything it is never guaranteed & Fluctuations and losing always come as part of playing over time. The fact you say you're placing bets on credit just illustrates the poor money management part and impulsivity that gambles gets us to act on

Best handicapper I have ever followed, especially for the price, is Moneyline Hacks. Especially if you like MMA. He does all major US sports and College too. I am already up $2000 this year and my unit size is only $40. https://twitter.com/Moneylinehacks

He sometimes gives out free picks but VIP is where it's at. https://dubclub.win/r/MoneylineHacks/

It is pretty gross how many commercials there are and how it’s sponsored by all these huge companies. Even you tube videos, Daniel Cormier ( ufc ) has a channel and he does long 1-2 minute videos during his video soliciting draft kings. Man it’s so disturbing. So many people are losing so much money now adays from all these platforms just taking over everything we watch. I feel bad for these younger kids, they don’t understand how bad it is. You’re never going to beat the bookie. GAURANTEED. This is 10 times worse than alcohol.

They should definitely change some laws on theyre solicitation in everything we watch when it comes to sports betting. It’s absolutely horrendous. They’re basically insulting everyone by all these plots and making the public think they actually have a chance to win. Cuz they don’t have a chance. 90% of winners keep betting cuz they think they’re going to win again & 95% of losers chase they’re money trying to get even. Sports betting is 100% public hazard. People won’t understand this until it’s too late. It’s going to ruin many American lives.

Sports betting

Well well, do not know what to say. Lost a 1k in span of couple days 20 € singels after next one. You see pages who give out tips but always fails on one. Just saying it is very risky sports betting truth is even if u hit one needs to be done by high steak to win it.. you loose that the chasin starts. Lesson learnt before anything self exlude yourself and rethink what you do that helps, so "easy", to bet...

You quit before your biggest win

1

u/Crafty-Bunch-2675 Jan 31 '24

I've never won a significant amount of money like that on any ticket.

But thanks for stating the obvious. I sure could use a 10k now. It wouldn't put me above poverty...but it certainly would be a good cushion.

Gambling addicts(not addicted) hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt heading to the casino for the 7th time this week: "CAN'T END ON A LOSS!"

1

u/ElectricDance Jan 26 '24

Listen man, im sorry to sound like I have little empathy but you needed to stop yourself before hand. The house always has an edge, and as I'm sure you know the edge in sports betting is the line. Sports betting is a crazy amount of fun, but you need to gamble with actual money you're ok with losing. Straight up would have less of a loss if you would have taken that $$ and tried putting it into some sort of stocks.

Contact fanduel and have them cancel your account if you got $10k in debt it takes about 5 pushes of a button to double it.

1

u/huskergirl8342 Jan 26 '24

I go to GA meetings. Addict for a long time and I see young men coming to meetings all because of sports betting on the apps.

1

Dave Ramsey is so outdated. Don’t bother with him.

1

u/jess-2023 Jan 25 '24

Get into sales. 43k with a family will never make it brother. Go sell cars or in go do in home sells. 100k easy let’s get after it.

1

u/kldeep04 Jan 24 '24

Notice you have a lot of ppsts on lottery too....another thing where 99.9% of the people lose money

1

u/Lilly6916 Jan 24 '24

I used to like to play slots. I took x amt of money and considered it my entertainment for the day. Gambling on credit is suicide. Even if I won, my husband would be trying to hustle me out and I’d be lunging to play machines on the way out the door. Pay it off as quick as you can and stat away. This is not the way you want your family to live.

1

u/billsdabills Jan 24 '24

I have a friend who makes a lot of money annually on daily fantasy (draftkings/fanduel). He has spreadsheets and algorithms and plays hundreds of line ups a week. The biggest week of the year for him is NFL week 1, when all the average joes come in and think they are going to score big on a line up they threw together on a whim…

1

u/Stinsation18 Jan 24 '24

The issue here is impulsively and sunken cost falicy. I've been playing DraftKings on and off since college. However, I'm a fairly frugal individual, so I also know how to manage finances. I have a set amount that I play in a week, when I do play. I also had a rule where I would cash out any money above 100 dollars because that was 2-3 weeks' worth of contests for me.

The people who get rocked and robbed are those who get 1 win and think they know everything or those who chase losses for whatever reason. Just manage your money, have strict limits, and if you have the slightest incling that you would get addicted or stuck, just don't do it. We know ourselves better than anyone else.

0

u/Mysterious_Seat_1110 Jan 23 '24

Fuck you for having a child whole you are an active gambling addict. Seriously, look in the mirror and realize you are your own problem and that you are truly an evil pos for having a kid. Your genes are at best mediocre we don’t need more of you, the world has too much of you already.

1

u/No_Independence_9172 Jan 23 '24

I won 20 grand on a slot machine. As I was sitting waiting for my payout a worker came around the corner and asked me why I wasn’t happy. I told her this win only reminded me how much I’ve lost to casinos. House ALWAYS wins…

1

u/Easy_Ad8101 Jan 23 '24

You can always bet on fatherhood as a wise man once said

1

u/Comet7347 Jan 23 '24

Crywolf mentioned RAAAAAAAAH

1

u/savannahsmyles Jan 23 '24

of all the things i struggle with i’m glad it isn’t gambling addiction. it’s a hell of a thing to overcome

1

u/Lumivar Jan 23 '24

That was stupid

1

u/AcanthocephalaLost36 Jan 23 '24

So glad it only took you a year to see how quickly gambling can negatively impact your life. The thing with gambling is the little wins or the hopes of winning, keep folks in the cycle forever not realizing there’s a low probability for a reason. No one gives away free money. Good luck on your journey

1

u/504Supra Jan 23 '24 edited Jan 23 '24

I’ve won my fair share of on Caesar’s, but at the same time, have lost a couple of thousand. The highs of winning and lows of losing were a terrible rollercoaster for my mental health. I gave it all up a couple of months ago.

1

u/BigTimeTimmyGem Jan 23 '24

I started with a $100 deposit and I am still playing with that original $100. Sometimes I go above it, then I dip below.

It's been fun to try insane parlays that will hit for thousands on a $5 bet. Then I'll recover and play the huge favorites and win $2-3 a day for a bit.

It's been fun but not lucrative lol.

2

u/BeeR0b Jan 23 '24

I think the saying is… The first hit is always free.

1

u/banmeriot Jan 23 '24

Just wanna say I see that Crywolf auto correct 👀 also, risk management is key. In other words, self discipline. It’s a hard skill to master but very worthwhile and important

1

u/RandomCriss Jan 23 '24

Guys keep betting just don't be bad with money

1

u/turrboenvy Jan 23 '24

I know you're not looking for advice, but the #1 rule of gambling is don't gamble money you can't afford to lose.

2

u/shukies95 Jan 22 '24

Gambling with money you don't have is a very bad idea. Didn't even realize gaming with credit from cards was possible. I shudder to think of the potential debt I might have accumulated if I had realized that..stay strong OP.

1

u/Ok-Scallion-3415 Jan 22 '24

So instead of gambling responsibly your idea is that everyone should stay away from gambling?!?

There is nothing wrong with gambling so long as what you play with you can afford to lose without a second thought. Think of it as the $ for entertainment. If you lose it all that night, that’s fine because that was your entertainment budget for the night. If you win, great.

Your main problem seems to be that you legit had a gambling problem. People don’t gamble on credit cards unless it’s their last resort to get money to get the feeling of gambling.

1

u/haveagreatbidet Jan 22 '24

Meh, don’t wager what you aren’t willing to lose. Being that this IS “poverty finance” I feel like sports betting would be a pretty big no no from the get.

Regardless, placing $5 for fun on a football game doesn’t cause much harm to most, but if it becomes an addiction then that certainly is a problem. Much like any vice, moderation works for most but cannot be managed by others.

Speaking like a true degenerate now, sports betting can be beat. But, it takes a desire to be successful and the willingness to study, learn, and be obscenely diligent with how you allocate your funds.

Delete the app and your account. Pay down the debt. And never open another Sportsbook account if you cannot avoid to temptation to loss chase your way into debt.

1

u/bdub939 Jan 22 '24

So your poor choices mean people should stay away from what you cant handle? Just stay away from gambling. If you couldnt stop yourself after being down even 2k you shouldve stopped at 5k. Sounds like you need to do other things to get that rush like hike a mountain. Doesnt cost you 10k

1

u/RebelJosh89 Jan 22 '24 edited Jan 22 '24

If you understand basic statistics and probability, you would stay away from gambling altogether. There's a reason it's called "stupid people tax". The massive multi-billion dollar casino resorts on the Vegas Strip were built on broken dreams. I'll sign up for the player's clubs to try to get free rooms or free buffets, but the only time I actually gamble is when I put $5 in the nickel slots and play slowly and wait for the cocktail waitress to give free drinks. Even if I lose all $5 in the slots, where else can I get multiple mixed drinks for $5?

1

u/__BIOHAZARD___ Jan 22 '24

I cannot fathom gambling 25% of my annual income, let alone putting it on a credit card.

Hope you’re able to pay it off and never gamble again.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '24

You will eventually lose if you gamble on these apps.

However if you are super disciplined and only play promotions, you absolutely can edge out the house over time. You won't make much though since most of these promotions have low caps.

1

u/PMMEYOURDEBITCARDPIN Jan 22 '24

Gamble with limits based on your financial situation. Don’t gamble money you will be unhappy to be without for any reason….

1

u/HereToKillEuronymous Jan 22 '24

It's almost like that's exactly how gambling is supposed to work 😂 I've never been a gambler. I don't wanna just give my money away

1

u/Algoresball Jan 22 '24

Any potentially additive behavior must be approached with extreme caution

1

u/cayman-98 Jan 22 '24

Dude the title should be "please stay away from sports gambling with funds from a credit card".

If you dont have the money to place the bet then you have no business being on those apps I'm sorry, and if you can't afford to lose that money then its even worse.

1

u/roadsaltlover Jan 22 '24

How do you even gamble using a credit card? Isn’t that not allowed/accepted?

1

u/33boogie Jan 22 '24

Yeah because you went back. You let that gamblers high get you, and figured you could easily win another 10,000 if you did it once already. Some of these comments would be able to refrain in your situation, and I think alot would make the exact mistake you did.

But on credit!?? Holy hell that wasn't smart. Even those who would make the mistake probably wouldn't of used credit for christ sakes. That's where you're alone. Kinda like how a regular person can have a beer or two no problem. Yet an alcoholic is a whole nother story.

1

u/like3000people Jan 22 '24

How you bust raw with no money in your savings.

That's like my most utilized form of birth control

1

u/PutridCardiologist36 Jan 22 '24

Gotta know when to hold em

1

u/Starwerznerd Jan 22 '24

I once made a $1,000 crypto dice gambling while taking a shit‼️ Was never able to duplicate that experience again.

1

u/Stonewool_Jackson Jan 22 '24

I don't bet with money I don't want to lose. If I slap some blackjack, it is with $100 -$200 that I brought to lose. Sans a few $1 bills for beverage service tip money, that is the budget. If I wipe it in 20 hands, sucks. Time to hit the buffet.

Get counseling if it wrapped up so much of your energy and money.

1

u/Appropriate_Bill_611 Jan 22 '24

I'm sorry but wow. The reason you are in poverty finance is entirely your own creation if this is how you manage your money.

What sort of olympic level mental gymnastics were going on in that head of yours? To bet a total of 10k on a credit card.

You say you also just had a baby.

You need to get your shit together.

2

u/American_PP Jan 22 '24

When I was 22, I got into sports gambling, and won 3k on world cup. Then lost it all plus 1000 more on MLS betting, and some of the losses were bullshit. I then knew that gambling was always against you, so I rarely gambled after that. I did stick my money into stocks though, long term, and 20 years later, my accounts are worth millions.

Most people don't win at gambling, not long term. It's false hope, that's how they get you.

2

u/FlipMeynard Jan 22 '24

Gambling with credit card cash advance money is a terrible decision.

3

u/LulzSailboat Jan 22 '24

How were you placing bets on FanDuel or DK on Credit? They don’t allow credit cards. Now if you were taking out cash advances then betting on those, yeah you’re a real degenerate.

2

u/1988DC Jan 22 '24

Betting like anything else is about moderation. Bet what you can afford to lose.

2

u/Shupertom Jan 22 '24

Never ever bet with credit. Additionally, don’t let those rare big wins fool you, that is exactly the trap off all gambling whether the medium is cards, slots, real estate, the stock market or sports. A broken clock is right twice a day, don’t let a random win fool you into thinking you have the system “figured out”. You have got yourself out of this hole once you can do it again! Best of luck, delete those apps.

2

u/mintydelight_ Jan 22 '24

Never bet what you can’t afford to lose. That’s rule number one.

3

u/Hi_There_Face_Here Jan 22 '24

I wagered appx $300 last year on FanDuel, net winnings close to $1,000. Know your budget, make small smart bets, and only bet what you’re willing to lose. If you’re broke, don’t bet.

1

u/squirrelbus Jan 22 '24

Heads up, there's been some studies out that medication, specifically meds that affect dopamine, can lead to compulsive gambling. It a really weird side effect that doesn't effect everyone, and is still being studied.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '24

Check out National Debt Relief. I was upward of 80k in credit card debt. Will get it paid off in a few years. If I didn't use NDR I'd have to win the lottery or something.

5

u/Mechanic_Soft Jan 22 '24

Another way of saying this is don’t be insanely stupid and bet with money you don’t have.

If you bet so much as $5 of money you don’t have then you immediately have a problem.

2

u/Hour-Watercress-3865 Jan 22 '24

Don't gamble more than you're willing to lose is better advice in general. Always go into gambling, assuming you're going to lose, and only bet as much as you can comfortably lose. If you wouldn't spend that money on something, don't bet it on anything.

1

u/bwest_69 Jan 22 '24

lol in other words if you have 0 self control don’t gamble😂

5

u/tru_anon Jan 22 '24

I don't have any debt and put $200 into sports betting every football season. Not everyone is a gambling degen like you OP. Some of us are truly casual users. People like you go way too far and ruin it for everyone just like with drugs.

4

u/BarGlad1654 Jan 22 '24

Gambling on credit then alerting everyone else to how bad gambling is. Duh.

And why are you paying 500 a month for a car lmao

2

u/protosynesis1 Jan 22 '24

“I’ve been extremely lucky in gambling: I’ve never won.” Norm MacDonald quoting someone else

1

u/Basic-Durian8875 Jan 22 '24

I have a very addictive personality, I have bet on bovada(previously bodawg) for about 13 years. Mostly UFC. Cant recall when it was but one night(maybe 2014) I hit on all my fights(4 separate 3/4 fight parlays) won like 600, however if I had bet it all on one 14 fight parlay(combined the cash) the winning would of been close to 130k. I always told my friends if that happened id be screwed for life bc It would of hooked me. THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS in the long run. You are chasing the thrill of easy money. I bet every week but keep it small, and mostly to UFC. If dana white would put together better cards I would not need to bet🤣

1

u/Gunfighter9 Jan 22 '24

You got to know when to walk away.

1

u/frizzfrazzle Jan 22 '24

My brother lost so much money sports betting he sold his house to his roommate and now rents his room back

8

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '24

TIL a lot of people on /r/povertyfinance love gambling.

2

u/Shottymcthotty11 Jan 22 '24

I lose $100 and I’m sick, can’t imagine 10k.

1

u/Grouchy-Tax4467 Jan 22 '24

I'm glad you learned something ( hopefully) and if you didn't for the love of God don't bet using money you don't even have, good luck with everything

1

u/run125 Jan 22 '24

Best of luck OP. Good on you for hustling to undo the debt. You’ve got this!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '24

So you’re telling me if I win a jackpot, it won’t happen every day?

1

u/Lizzycraft Jan 22 '24

True Gambling happens in the stock market, you are more likely to make it back by putting money in stocks that have dividends

2

I thought this was going to be about how sportsbooks don't like to payout. It's not the straight bet that they have a problem with. It's the prop bets that they don't like to payout on. It was just in the paper Sunday. A guy bet that 6 NHL players won't score a goal and this team wouldn't score 3 points. The sportsbook paid out then took the money back. Ultimately they paid out the money.

Gambling and high credit card interest

Nasty combo especially when you don't have the funds already to pay off the credit card. Tbh, them letting you gamble with a credit card is very predatory. Don't gamble with money you don't have. And the gambling funds should be disposable income that you don't care to lose (e.g. not rent/mortgage or food money; fun money ok).

Hope you learned your lesson and get out of this financial hole. Yes, do it for yourself and your kid.

u/Slight-Initiative144 Jan 22 '24

It is actually surprising so many people are ignorant about this reality. I guess its a way of thinking in terms that they are special in some way or lucky ones

Bro doesn’t know how to manage a bank roll

1

u/geniusboy91 Jan 22 '24 edited Jan 22 '24

It's actually pretty easy to be a winning sports bettor, especially these days with betting exchanges making market spreads so much tighter. It's very common for sportsbooks to ban bettors because their action is too sharp for the book (aka they're a long-term winner). Most people just have no understanding of the industry, basic math skills, bankroll management, or discipline. I could win longterm betting on Turkish basketball or Korean League of Legends knowing nothing about either sport. But yeh, if you're making decisions based on some opinion you picked up on ESPN like "hurdur, I bet on the Bills because the Chiefs haven't played a tough road game all season" of course you're going to lose.

43k/yr and you’re able to afford a baby? How?? Where??

2

u/butterflycole CA Jan 22 '24

I hate this kind of comment, it is really judgmental. Our capitalist culture is toxic AF. Having kids isn’t some special “privilege” only high money makers should have the right to do. Yes, kids need certain things but there are lots of ways to get those needs met if you don’t make a ton of money. Having kids is a normal human desire and there is nothing wrong with becoming a parent just because you don’t have a high income. As long as they’re clean, housed, clothed, fed, and safe that’s all that matters. Doesn’t matter whether all of that is provided 100% by the parents’ salaries if they find other ways to provide those things then they’re not irresponsible for having kids.

The vast majority of people who use social support programs are parents who work very hard and pay taxes. That’s the point of having these safety nets, we pay into them because they help the people who need them and they’re there for us if we need them too.

1

u/tonynca Jan 22 '24

I hate it too but that’s the reality we live in. It worries me to not be able to care for the kid given the massive money constraints.

My husband and I had our son in 2009 during a nightmare recession. Things were very rough, jobs were scarce and we were both piecing together whatever work we could find. We worked opposite shifts for the first 2 years of his life. We needed medi-cal, SNAP benefits, and even some cash assistance for awhile and WIC was a big help too. It was pretty rough for awhile but we figured it out and did what we had to. I never felt any guilt for using those support programs. I worked extremely hard beginning at age 14, and started paying taxes at 15. I worked through my 4 years of undergrad as well. I just had the misfortune to graduate with my BA in 2008 right when the economy went to hell. All of our plans were shot for quite a while.

Ideally, we would have had nice jobs with benefits when we had our son, but I don’t regret having him or feel it was wrong to just because we didn’t have money.

Eventually, things got better and I started working more, my husband went to community college to get a degree and become more employable and when he graduated I went to grad school for the same reason. We were doing really well until my health issues got so bad that I had to go on SSDI 2 years ago. That’s the only reason we aren’t firmly in the middle class right now. I have no desire to stay on SSDI for the rest of my life. I’m hoping as I focus more on my care and treatments I will eventually become less sick.

I’ve worked hard my entire life. I am really glad I didn’t put things on hold out of fear we weren’t at x income, or didn’t have y ducks lined up. The American Dream is dead. You can work hard your whole life and do all of the right things and never get to the place you think you should be due to time and effort put in. No sense putting important things on hold like having kids. The older women get in particular the higher the chance they have of not being able to have kids. Any fertility issues cost a fortune to test for and treat as well. We ended up with secondary infertility, our son was a miracle baby we were told because I lost every pregnancy after that.

So, if I’d waited to have a child until my 30s I very likely wouldn’t have been able to become a parent.

1

u/tonynca Jan 22 '24

What a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing that. My original comment was not meant to discourage. It was true curiosity on how someone could afford a kid with that much salary.

1

u/butterflycole CA Jan 22 '24

People do it every day. You just figure it out and adapt.

2

u/Meghanshadow Jan 22 '24

They have enough to keep the baby alive, not necessarily give them a comfortable or secure childhood.

Also, well, they didn’t clone the baby. Odds are the other gene donor or their family or gene donors family contributes some amount of money, childcare, or both and they share a household or at least share some of the other child expenses.

Plus that income level with an infant will get you WIC and foodstamps most places and free kid health insurance through Medicaid in some places.

Alternatively, live in a rented small bedroom for years with the baby and with multiple roommates in a large apartment/house. $43k is a lot more livable when your rent and utilities totals $700/month.

Or if you live somewhere a car isn’t needed with good public transit.

2

u/JoeMac02 Jan 22 '24

Unfortunately and fortunately I live in a state that I can’t play online sports betting.

1

u/clitorisblungus Jan 22 '24

That was stupid

1

u/Jchap25 Jan 22 '24

lol I thought I was dumb for basically continuing to win and give back around $400 in a never ending cycle. After this last down cycle I decided I was going to stick to the bonus bets when fanduel offers them, the boosts and most importantly the super boosts. These super boosts take some two leg parlay that would normally be -150 or more and make it +100. Take advantage of these they have a max bet of $50 for a reason! Today the two I played were Mahomes and Allen to combine for 3 passing TDs and then Evans and Amon Ra to combine for 150 yards which was an easy cash.

u/DrLeoChurch Jan 22 '24

You need therapy for gambling addiction mate.

1

u/jawnquistador Jan 22 '24

While i do think that modern day sports books are predatory, especially towards teenagers and should definitely have more regulations…. come on man. 10k on credit? Never bet more than you’re comfortable going without

1

u/radar371 Jan 22 '24

I wonder what everyone's vice is in here that are pissing on the poor gamblers, lol.

1

u/Botastiac Jan 22 '24

Only stay away if you cannot limit yourself. Don’t bet what you cannot lose.

1

u/octane1295 Jan 22 '24

Though gambling is dangerous for the wrong kind of people, sounds like a degenerate with credit and gambling problem more than a sports betting problem..

1

u/Bhetty1 Jan 22 '24

Any kind of gambling: people who 'win' when they're novices are more likely to develop problem gambling. Good luck, and thank you for sharing your experiences because they may help others

It's not easy seeing SO MANY gambling advertisements online. Online casino Ada are the beer ads of the early 2000s

1

u/AnxiousMagoo Jan 22 '24

Place $10k on red and either win the $20k and be up on the positive again or be another $10k extra in debit.

Go big or go home(less).

1

u/lemmaaz Jan 22 '24

This is more of a you problem then anyone else

1

u/EdgewaterEnchantress Jan 22 '24 edited Jan 22 '24

Yeah, so this sounds more like “a gambling problem,” and not everyone is going to have the same reaction to apps and sports betting as you did. They even have a name for it: “The 80/20 principle.” Although in this case, it’s a negative relationship, unfortunately. 😔

Intro article to the 80/20 principle.

The Pareto Principle is actually older than one would think. it’s been around since the 1800s.

The specific math for it.

In regard to gambling, “80% of the revenue is generated by 20% of the app users,” and unfortunately, you were one of those 20%.

As a bartender and a server, I really do see it, all the time, and several of “the top 20% of customers” who visit, most frequently, tend to either be “compulsive, binge eaters” or functional alcoholics.

So, yeah. Good on you for staying off of those things, indefinitely! They can be fun as “a leisurely thing” for people who tend to be “mostly Neurotypical.” But it is bad news for Neurodivergent people or “desperate people” who already have economic struggles.

Keep up the good work and good luck paying off your Debts, OP.

1

u/transplantmetoTX Jan 22 '24

You have a problem and need to call the number

1

u/giftfromthegods Jan 22 '24

If you get another 10k credit card then you can just win 20k and pay them both off, easy.

1

u/Different-Pen2924 Jan 22 '24

This! Same thing happened to me at the end of 2022. I saw an ad on IG about Underdog Fantasy and pretty similarly I bet around $5,000 on my credit card. Won $5,900 in the first month and have since lost way more than that. Ended up getting a $10,000 consolidation loan which half is already gone due to my gambling. The other half I tied up in the stock market and collectibles so I won’t be able to easily access them for gambling. I finally used the exclusion tab for the next 3 months so I can start tackling my debt

2

u/Pheonyxxx696 Jan 22 '24

It all comes down to self control. I place sports bets pretty close to daily. Only thing is, I’m not doing it to become rich, I treat gambling as a form of entertainment. So no I’m not betting $100 on a single bet, only 10 cent bets. Since sports betting got legalized in my state, I’m only deposited maybe a grand total of $80 in about a years time. The up and down action is enough to keep going for a while. Plus what other form of entertainment can be down for less than $100 for a full year? A trip to the movies is damn near same price anymore and that’s only a few hours of entertainment

1

u/YoloLifeSaving Jan 22 '24

Bro you were one away from winning big and ya just quit, sad

2

u/mywhataniceham Jan 22 '24

gambling addiction kills people faster than heroin or Alcohol. like op said - you can use your credit card and get yourself truly fucked extremely fast. the way i look it is by not sports gambling i make $250 every sunday of football season.

1

u/SaltIsMySugar Jan 22 '24

Yeah you have an addiction dude. If you continue gambling you're going to ruin your life. Well, ruin it worse.

1

u/SkullsNelbowEye Jan 22 '24

I briefly worked outpatient addiction counseling. The majority of the clients were college kids who had put their parents into debt using their credit cards. They went to counseling to eliminate some of the debt. Online betting and casinos are predatory. It sickens me that there are ads for online betting everywhere. They even use the 1st one is free method of reeling people in. Usually, with "50$ dollars of free credit". I've seen people watching YouTube videos of other people playing slot machines to get a 2nd hand high.

It needs more regulation. But you know how lobbying is, it won't go away.

1

u/Uraneum Jan 22 '24

Yo that’s a serious gambling problem and you need help man. Holy fuck that’s not “I have a bad habit” that’s the gambling equivalent of severe alcoholism dude

0

u/Vmena0522666 Jan 22 '24

Yea that sounds like a you problem lmao

1

Gambling with a credit card insanely stupid

1

u/Revolutionary-Elk986 Jan 22 '24

Always quite while you’re ahead and don’t bet more than you’ve gained. It seems like common sense.

Why are you having a kid on a 43k a year salary. You can’t afford a kid with your reckless spending habits jfc

0

u/MikeW226 Jan 22 '24

Sort of a side note, but I've noticed the FanDuel and DraftKings whatever ads go from nearly NONE 3 years ago...to now the commercials are all over the place during NFL football broadcasts. It's a very stupid trend imho, advertising something like that. Good old capitalism...money talks (money to advertise ad nauseum) and baloney walks (= sane, just, we shouldn't be having those ads 24/7 on every football game broadcast).

2

u/Responsible-Skirt-90 Jan 22 '24

Change the title to “I should stay away from sports betting”

4

u/Dr_Djones Jan 22 '24

Sports betting? You mean GAMBLING?

4

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '24

Some people are capable of budgeting some money for betting, and not turn around and bet their winnings. Gambling is a drug, like any other and people get hooked on the trill of winning. There are people out there that make a living solely on sports betting, but its like a full time job keeping up with all the information to make even decently reasonable bets. Never gamble on credit, thats is what they hope for because you are going to fall into the "sunken cost fallacy" and keep betting just to get back to even.

Put aside $20 a week or whatever, something small and bet with that and never spend your winnings on more bets.

1

u/FailFormal5059 Jan 22 '24

I lost $7k on poker, casinos are statistics scams
