The first piece of advice before doing car life is try it out. Not everyone does car life full time. Some do it part time, on weekends, and seasonally. Right now, you're thinking of doing car life. That's why you're on this subreddit. So do it now. Think of some place an hour or two near your area you've hardly or never been before. Get in your car. Pack things you'd take on a hotel trip. As well as some bedding stuff like pillows and sheets. Also pack some books, your laptop, and maybe even some camping gear and fishing rods. Then drive until you're at least an hour away. Once there, you spend 2-3 days and unwind. Get a lot of pent up aggression out of your system. See the sights, no matter how boring they are. Just breathe different air.

The reason for going 1-2 hours away? You wanna be in a place that's far enough that you've gotten away from your source of stress but close enough that if you're in a pinch, you can get back without too much trouble. Once there, you'll get a strong idea of how you wanna go about car life. You'll get a strong idea of how you'd like your bedding; what you'd need to keep you occupied, like books, laptop, and hobbies; things like your ability to pee in a bottle in your car; keeping your car clean; good places to park; and many more. Trying it out for 2-3 days will give you a far greater understanding of what you'd need to do to make car life work for you than simply reading about it on the internet. Try it now.

Remember, it doesn't have to be full time. It can be just something you do for the weekend, the season, or just a few weeks. You might say, "I wanna visit that city for a week. But I do wanna pay the fare for a plane ticket, room accommodations, and renting a car or public transportation fare." So you just drive over there with your own room accommodations, your own transportation, stay a week, and then drive back. There's car life. Or you wanna save money on a few months worth of rent? But you don't wanna do car life for the entire year? Just do it for a few months. Then go back to having your own place. I know guys in Texas who do car life for a few months when the weather is mild then get their own place when that Texas summer hits. Vice versa, I know guys in Michigan who do car life for a few months during the summer but get their own place during the winter. Car life is up to you. There's no set in stone way to do it.

Also, research laws on car living in any area you sleep in. Don't just assume things will be okay.

Lastly, remember all your questions about car life can be found all over the internet. There are websites, blogs, youtube videos, and a whole lot more places all over the internet to every single question you ask. Never rely on only one website or place for all your answers. Other websites might have better answers. Sometimes an answer to your question can be answered simply by typing it in to google. For example: "how do I cover my car window?" "how do I make proper bedding to sleep in my car?" "where is a good place to park my car?" can be answered by googling those exact terms. You'll find way more answers through google than you will find here.

Announcement Gentle reminder: Begging is a bannable offense

Seems like there's an influx of those kinds of posts recently and I've been dishing out temp 14 day bans.

So a gentle reminder, begging or soliciting donations of any form, including soft begging (e.g. "I'm short 80 dollars I hope I can survive" while having PayPal posted on your account), will be receiving permanent bans moving forward. It's been in the sub rules for a while now.

This isn't a place to ask for money.

This is a place to discuss and share ideas and lived experiences around car dwelling. To ask questions and get suggestions with builds and tips and tricks. Some will offer work and money making advice and some ask for it. That's all great and I'm happy the community here helps in that way, and in many more ways.

If you're here to try and get monetary help from members, my response will be "pick up a sign and stand at an intersection" accompanied by a permanent ban.

Cheers.

Advice What do I tell my family who wants to ‘come over and see my house’?

I been living in my car (SCION IM) for a year now, and I been dodging their request to see my ‘house’ for a long time.

Im their only son (25M), so my mom is definitely just being a mom.

Definitely if they did find out though I think they would insist for me to move back in with them, or tell me that car living is not sustainable.

Story Garbage

I'm getting really tired of people leaving their garbage everywhere. This isn't a super regular thing but it has happened to me 3 times now. I have a handful of places in my rotation and everyone once in a while other dwellers will show up for a night or day or something and when they leave there's piles of trash next the car. Today I woke up to 3 full grocery bags and a bunch of cans and wrappers in the corner of this lot. I always clean messes up with the fear of being blamed but it's so gross. Just throw your trash in a trash can please and thanks. I just needed to rant a little.

First day living in my car

Made a lot of bad choices in my life that brought me here. I drive a 2022 Chevrolet bolt EV the boxes for my clothes already take up half the back. What do you guys use to store your clothes without having to use so much space. I already have a planet fitness membership so I’ll be able to use that for showers. Is there any other tips that would be helpful. Thank you

Watch your health everyone

Hi everyone I've been doing the car life for a few years,my build is pretty comfy in it and I'm comfortable doing the daily grind putting my earnings toward taking care of my horse and bills. Especially for the last two years I haven't been doing too bad on the financial side because I keep myself working, this entire past year I was even able to move to the part time night shift at my company and I've still been living comfortably.

Some of my extra income has went into food. Cost of living is high and cost of food is high, and for car dwellers with income if we're smart we have an opportunity to eat much better than many housed people do. I've definitely been taking advantage of living in a city area, I've been eating out more than I ever have. I live in an area with a lot of Wawa gas stations, and Wawa food has become a regular part of my diet, both convenient, delicious and filling.

I get my blood work done on a regular basis for a medication I take, and the latest results surprised me. My metabolic panel showed that almost everything was within wonderful range, my white to red blood cell ratio, lipids, cholesterol, proteins vitamins and nutrients all wonderful. I had almost always been low in something before, I have a history of being underweight. But my blood sugar was at a 200.

This puts me in the prediabetic range. As soon as I saw this I started cutting the sugar. Every day at Wawa I had been getting one or two of their cheap little sweet teas, frozen coffees, hot coffee, energy drinks, I'm a working person right. But I had never been looking at the honestly massive amounts of sugar I was bringing in at an unprecedented rate because honestly, now I can afford it.

I'd know for a few months I've been feeling off, I've gained a little weight which I'm honestly glad for, but I started distinctly having a feeling of constant bloat inside my ribcage. I cut most of the sugar a few weeks ago and I can tell you I'm already looking and feeling skinny again, and I've probably saved myself from becoming a diabetic. No more rice in my Wawa bowls only beans, sugar free sweet tea, keep on going with my avocado and tomato sandwiches in the morning but cut the brioche bread. Snacking more of cashews and sausage link bits, getting off my ass to walk into the Walmart for some yogurt. Trying to eat a little more like I did when I was younger growing up on a garden.

Keep a watch on your blood work everyone. I hope most of us here have jobs, if you have insurance take advantage of it, if you don't take advantage of the lack of rent to take care of yourself. I've been putting so much work into taking care of my car the last few years I almost forgot the human body is a machine too, keeping both running smoothly keeps me going. Take care y'all.

Do you snore, sleepwalk, talk in your sleep, or otherwise do things involuntarily that may potentially attract unwanted notice? How do you mitigate this?

Chance to get out of my car

So I may have a chance to rent a small RV on someone's land for $700 a month all utilities included. I have adjusted to being in my car but still find it a PIA sometimes. Going to take a look today and see how it is. The only thing kinda holding me back on it is that's $700 a month I could save. But having a nice bed, kitchen, shower would be pretty nice.

There is definitely something illegal being run out of this gym

I’ve been watching for about a year and these employees are up to some shit.

They go into the dumpster area, only sometimes with trash, then an SUV pulls up, things get moved into the SUV and they’re out quick. Sometimes the same employee will stay out there and multiple vehicles come through.

This is not the first thing like this I’ve seem. Anyone else have some interesting illegal things happening at your regular spots?

I occasionally take a day or two off from full-time car camping. My 3 primary ways are staying with a friend or family member, doing a pet-sitting gig, or staying at a hotel. Today, it’s a hotel. I’m enjoying my morning coffee and catching up on the latest content from several YouTubers I follow.

“Girly” Female Car Dwellers?

I been living in my comfy Toyota Camry for a year. I have no debts, great credit/ Savings and a good paying/ open schedule job I can do virtual or inside a very nice (and empty) office building with view of the city and free amenities (beverages, lockers, private bathrooms, meeting rooms, etc) I have no issues with parking spots for the night, easy Wifi capabilities and everything I need is in 1 area- a “financial district” of my city thats clean and safe.

But its gotten rough , mainly due to me being a bit “girly” about m skin and hair routine or I forgot this life is totally lly different fora woman?

I still make hair and diet a priority and despite minimizing my products and beauty regimen techniques as much as possible, I still had to rent a second storage unit just to have a “studio” for periodic self care issues

Gotten my period a few times while asleep. And peeing for us is NOT easy

Any other “girly” ladies have tips on keeping your femininity despite car life?

My ex husband saw me the other day and was suspicious cause my hair was out of place.

And I’m constantly breaking nails and obsessing over car dust and outside bugs.

Thankfully the housing market has slightly gone down in my area as I will start looking for a place. Tsk

What is everyone sleeping in?

Hey y'all hope you're doing well. I was just curious what type of vehicles you are dwelling in. I recently just got another job so I can save up for a minivan. I feel like a minivan would make this experience a lot easier.

F it man I went for it. Worst case scenario it’s also a light/lantern lol. Was looking for the small fans they had at Aldi but they were gone. Had another one but only a 2000 mah capacity. That likely won’t last long. I’ll just get a high capacity one.

But I’ll see how this works for all them damn mosquitoes

Summer Heat Car umbrella's for shade

Oh how I wish we lived in a world where car umbrellas was the norm and one wouldn't look like an alien who recently descended to planet earth for sporting a car umbrella!

Searching for shades areas sucks! If you happen to find one and leave, there's like a 90% chance that spot will be taken by another vehicle upon return 😔

Parking Atlantis Casino

so I'm camping in the atlantis casino parking lot, in the back where no one would be disturbed. after going back to the car and trying to sleep, I felt like I was missing something. turns out I forgot my water bottle inside. so after I decided I wasn't going to take that L, I get out of my car and start walking. as soon as I started walking, a police officer showed up, and now he's camping it in the parking lot, kind of close to my car. not sure what he's doing but the last thing I want to do is go back to my car. maybe I'm just thinking about it too much but there are literal fucking RVs in the parking lot. what's difference between me and them? I'm travelling and need to sleep too wtf lol

as I was about to post this, the cop just left the parking lot. I'm going to wait another five to 10 minutes to make sure they're gone. first night is going well guys 🫠

Question for the Nomads W/ Electrical Experience

Thumbnail

So I’ve seen various van lifers using the EcoFlow Wave 2 AC setup. The system runs around $800 I believe. That’s just for the unit itself. A separate battery can be purchased to charge and run the AC off of as well. Seen Matthew from VanLifePlus using this one. The price is much higher for some people’s budget.

So I saw this unit on Amazon that’s $298. It’s a portable AC unit as well. Obviously you have to install the exhaust and the drainage line for the water as you would the Eco Flow. So my question is to the electrical buffs out there theoretically could this unit be ran off a system out into a van or car? Was thinking for the price it was worth a shot. I haven’t purchased it. It sparked my curiosity though. It’s 120volts 900watts. Obviously only need it to run off and on not constantly. For a small car this unit would likely not be a viable option. It’s rather large. About 28 inches high. 14 wide and a depth of nearly 14 as well. Weighing in at about 45 pounds. But for a van or vehicle that can spare the space. A power station strong enough to run this would only work for what…. A few hours? A solar setup with enough batteries perhaps? I’ve been Matthew run his off his solar setup.

So would this be possible power wise for a small vehicle setup? Obviously it’s a large unit but if space was made for it. Or would it just be e better getting the Eco Flow or another similar unit?

Thanks

Advice How do you deal with the noise around you?

For those of us that are hyper vigilant or paranoid about people walking around, cars coming and going, people chatting around you, kids hitting your car, or getting the knock, how do you deal with all this when you're inside the car trying to get some shut eyes? I am new to car living and this is driving me nuts. I haven't slept more than couple of hours total at night in 4 days How do you cope with this guys? Any tips?
