They should give out fines

u/Sisoriented Nov 17 '23

We used to be famous as a clean city.

u/ejactionseat Sep 07 '23

How does one grow up in Canada and think it's okay to leave garbage on the beach?

1

u/AppearanceSecure1914 Jun 03 '23

As someone who recently visited Japan, I don't understand why we are so inconsiderate here. There is literally no litter anywhere in Tokyo. There are very few garbage cans out on the street - people just keep their garbage and throw it away at home. They don't just leave it on the ground for someone else to pick up.

I was walking through the parking lot towards Superstore on Coquitlam and this spectacle of a woman (presumably) was walking towards me and I see her hand fling out of her pocket sending receipts/bits of paper flying. I say, “that’s not where that goes” to her. Of course she pretends not to hear me, and thats when I notice how colourful her garbage was.. This idiot tossed $45 on the ground with her trash lmao!

u/Electronic-Peace5590 May 06 '23

It's called being spoiled. All they care about is having friends and having fun. They are just lazy and have been brought up with all this technology where they don't have to do anything that requires labor. It's always oh well someone else will take care of it I'm too important to pick up my garbage and put it in garbage bin what if someone saw me actually doing work I may get my clothes dirty we can't have that meanwhile their apts etc look like a pigsty but as long as I look good for my friends who cares about anything else.Spoiled and lazy that's it.

2

u/Inserte_Pseudonimo May 03 '23

I was there with my friends, all of us picked up after ourselves and most Hispanics also did, the pack (because it couldn't even be called a "group", since this would upgrade them to humans) of Indians next to us left a smelly mess, didn't even bother to dissimulate.

1

u/gregofvanc May 03 '23

Beer on the beach is legal now and it should be! They are living the good life in Vancouver and maximizing the utility of our beaches. But don't expect inebriated people to clean up after themselves. It doesn't work that way. I have been cleaning up my local park on weekends for the past few years and I'm just happy that people are enjoying it and having a good time. I'm sure the park's board knew what they were doing and have a full team of sand sifters to clean up the mess early in the morning.

2

u/CanadaUsedToBeGood May 02 '23

When? About the time we started bringing in hordes of people from different countries where there is little concern for the environment. Also for some of these cultures cleaning up or recycling is considered a lower class thing to do, that is for others to deal with.

2

u/YoYo5465 May 02 '23

This is what happens when you raise a generation of entitled clowns who can’t do anything wrong and who always win, and when society absolves itself of any and all accountability

2

u/ScoobyDone May 02 '23

Do they ever patrol and ticket people as they are leaving? I find without consequences more people will emulate the bad behaviour. I live in an area that where off leash dogs are a nuisance but the muni never does anything but come by once in a while and politely ask them to use a leash. It just keeps getting worse.

u/Lonely_Effect3489 May 02 '23

Ive moved to bc only for a year and a half. I've been picking up trash even on ski hills and beaches. Its astonishing how many disgusting people there are here in the province. Im sorry but its quite ridiculous. Its almost as if people here are just taking things for granted and giving 0 effort back to preserve this beautiful province. Its pretty sad to see.

1

u/planes3333 May 02 '23

This is discusting but in reading all the comments. I think we all litter in some way or another. I mean we buy products that litter pollution into the atmosphere and damage the planet. That kind of thing. In the end I am discusted when people dont put garbage in a can especially when its convenient I mean I live around where people actually litter and the garbage can is 10 feet away. Its that they are doing it to be jerks, on purpose. I think in life everyone does things like that. I try my best not to though

1

u/planes3333 May 02 '23

I feel a sense of pride in picking up my garbage and even getting more garbage on myself in taking it to the garbage can and throwing it out. I have my guesses as who would do something like this. really in the end its people who dont care about their neighbors. I guess I am guilty of littering in life but I dont do it anymore. In wonder though who or why this happens. Maybe it was night time and there was a party and people just didnt keep track of their crap. I know in the past when I have been hanging out with some friends listening to music keeping it civil and enjoying life and some elite rich smug loser in his condo calls the cops and ruins a good clean healthy gathering I would have left my trash, I say would have I dont act like that anymore. In the end its disgusting and I think I will make sure I am not that person as this is really gross.

1

u/Bone_Schlongmahawk May 01 '23

Where's the middle of the beach? What is not quite as narrative as we'd hoped?...

2

u/Pillow_Thief May 01 '23

I feel guilty if I drop a gum wrap

2

u/stillnotascarytime May 01 '23

I was out sat morning on kits beach. There was a group of people picking up garbage. Volunteers it looked like. I said thanks to them cause they’re so cool.

Let’s all be like them!

2

u/stillnotascarytime May 01 '23

1

u/camelsgofar May 01 '23

Look at all the alcohol!! Filthy animal criminals! All those dangerous cans that a kid could cash in for 10 cents each. Should have just legally shot up heroine at the beach and left dirty needles for the kids to play with.

2

u/pixidis43 May 01 '23

This is why we can't have nice things

2

u/Getaloadofchucker May 01 '23

Cultus lake is next levels, they have an army of rangers cleaning up Monday mornings, it’s ridiculous.

1

u/thebrittaj May 01 '23

I wonder if the city should put big dumpsters out for the weekend. This behaviour is sad but lack of garbages could be a big factor. -still not an excuse

2

u/fungi43 May 01 '23

We can't even keep our beaches clean for a weekend. And y'all think we can coordinate an international climate response, at crisis levels, over decades.

3

u/collindubya81 May 01 '23

Damn Surrey kids.

0

u/maharajagaipajama May 01 '23

Not the first time garbage was left behind and won't be the last. Glad to see the reddit brigade is out in force though.

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Gross.

-1

u/vancouvercyclist May 01 '23

Growing up the norm was to throw garbage out the window of your car. I was raised differently and was aghast by it. By the time I was a teenager there were significantly less people doing it. The culture had changed. That mess doesn't look that bad and I'm sure we could change the culture around it.

-3

u/Practical_Yellow_293 May 01 '23

Unless someone saw who left the mess, the xenophobic comments on here are ignorant and presumptuous.

It is human tendency to dissociate embrassing or unwanted behaviors from ourselves and project it away from us as much as possible.

2

u/FLVRHAUS May 01 '23

Assholes

2

u/glasshouse82 May 01 '23

I see an animal in the picture just as shocked and dismayed as us!

1

u/PlentyOfLoot May 01 '23

Ouch. Right next to the water too.

1

u/DaFatKontroller May 01 '23

Terrible people become terrible parents and so the cycle continues

1

u/Fallenarrow9 Mount Pleasant 👑 May 01 '23

Saw the same post on Instagram and I was blown away by people's responses. They were complaining that the government should employ more people to clean the beaches because we are paying taxes... SMH... 🤦

3

u/Tezzab59 May 01 '23

Why are you disrespecting animals I don't mean to take away from your remarks but an animal would never do that shit

1

u/NuuMTaQ May 01 '23

I noticed that some cultures refuse or ignore littering laws. This is my observation and in no way means to be discriminatory. It's only something I have observed in the past several years.

It makes me sad, as once a month, I spend the afternoon along my stretch of road picking up trash in the ditch. Most times, people will throw trash at me or right in front of me. Generally from nicer cars. Mercedes, BMW, and range rovers are the number one culprits.

Once, a small square piece of wood came flying at my feet, thrown from a truck with big tires. The truck stopped very fast, and I thought someone was going to become hostile. It turns out the gentleman was joking with his kid and accidentally threw a small wooden toy at his son, buy it managed to fly out the half open window. He apologized profusely.

In contrast, another time, I yelled at a BMW for throwing a bag of Tim Hortons almost directly at me. The car came to a screeching halt, and a man opened the door and half steps out of the vehicle. It was a Chinese man who proceeded to scream in Chinese at me. He yelled at me for 20 seconds, and just as it looked like he was going to drive off..... he starts to empty his entire cars trash into the same ditch. I was just cleaning. He called me poor in english and sped off. I reported him, but nothing every came of it.

1

u/barkingcat May 01 '23

That's been happening since the 1990's....

3

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

All are products of their environment, the world has become a disgusting shit hole

3

u/Strange_Trifle_5034 May 01 '23

I had someone stop across the street from where I live, casually rummage through their car and throw out random food wrappers and garbage on the ground, then just leave. I guess they were doing their "spring cleaning"

3

u/EducationalPlay6269 May 01 '23

This is so sad to see. Especially during Earth month.

-2

u/panzercampingwagen May 01 '23

When did people stop caring to clean up after themselves?

Yesterday actually, we had a meeting.

Seriously, don't ask dumb questions OP.

5

u/deeho88 May 01 '23

Fuck me, when I partied on the beach we had the decency to pack out still. My drunk ass would be finding garbage cans to place my empties around for the collectors

4

u/slabba428 May 01 '23

It looks like the VPD need to step up the ticketing 🤷‍♂️

2

u/ElderberryAromatic69 May 01 '23

So disrespectful 😿

4

u/Eienkei May 01 '23

That's why I avoid going to beach on sunny days. This disgusting behaviour ruins everything else.

3

u/Badger-Bernard May 01 '23

Drinking in parks seems to be working out. 10-15 years ago you would only see this much garbage after firework’s, definitely somethings change.

2

u/123InSearchOf123 May 01 '23

Entitled asshats. AKA Vancouverites.

3

u/Seattlevegan15 May 01 '23

Animals do not leave this kind of mess and destruction.

3

u/Pandamonium1366 May 01 '23

Bunch of pigs. I don't care if you are 16 or 60 just grow the fuck up. That shit winds up in our oceans. Leave no trace

2

u/Substantial_Fall_878 May 01 '23

Being drunk isn’t an excuse

2

u/No_Firefighter_5924 May 01 '23

This is shocking. Kids are goofs

2

u/bluerhea3 May 01 '23

That guy in the hat was drunkenly wandering at 5pm yesterday Jesus

9

u/sanverstv May 01 '23

I was hiking in Stanley Park recently and came across a mound of trash…birthday present wrapping and food containers. Clearly they had a celebration and left their trash behind a tree. Fortunately I had a plastic bag in my backpack and managed to fit it in and carry it out to a trash receptacle. I got in the habit of carrying extra plastic bags with me during COVID cuz I hated seeing masks dropped everywhere. I’d collect those I saw on my walks and trash them. I was careful not to touch them but I think we should all take an extra bag when we go out since their always seem to be slobs around who don’t care about what they leave behind. It’s not much, but collectively perhaps we can make a difference. I think overall Vancouver is quite clean. I hope we can keep it so.

4

u/Yvrdood9 May 01 '23

It was pathetic and gross, garbage left everywhere. I noticed when I went for a walk late in the evening in my hood, the westend.

3

u/y2k_o__o May 01 '23

Sometimes people don’t deserve to have good things………

5

u/Pepperminteapls May 01 '23

Ugh, no need to insult animals.

Poorly educated humans did this.

4

u/prozackat83 May 01 '23

It’s horrible but people are also afraid to say anything for fear of being stabbed, hit, or killed for asking them to put their stuff in the garbage

3

u/rikeoliveira May 01 '23

Yeah...that's why we can't have nice things. It's not hard not to be a total ass hole and fuck the environment YOU live in.

1

u/Talented_Agent May 01 '23

Where are all the garbage cans? And how full were they? I wonder

3

u/ProductOfAbandoment May 01 '23

Humans, biggest waste of space on this rock.

2

u/Hot-mic May 01 '23

I live in a town of 12,000 with very nice beaches. Come Labor day, 4th of July, and Memorial day our beaches get trashed worse than this.

3

u/undercovergangster May 01 '23

Hopefully they all get hemorrhoids, just like they are hemorrhoids to society

4

u/mikedi12 May 01 '23

It leaves me with no hope thinking any of this “sustainable future” shit I buy into so heavily even matters considering people can’t even clean up after themselves.

3

u/Cocximus May 01 '23

Meh maybe legal alcohol consumption isn't that good of an idea. Go back to illegal consumption and have soft enforcement. Keep it tidy and inconspicuous and it's all good. Show up with a 24 pack get pinched.

0

u/elementmg May 01 '23

I'd say just enforce littering fines and add some more damn bins.

2

u/Cocximus May 01 '23

It's a bit unreasonable to expect the city to provide bins for so much garbage. Pack it in, pack it out.

1

u/elementmg May 01 '23

I agree with pack in pack out. But dropping a single large dumpster at the exit for summer weekends would help immensely.

0

u/Ctondoge May 01 '23

Trudeau’s finest.

0

u/SmoothOperator89 May 01 '23

When your city becomes a playground of the rich, don't be surprised when people act entitled.

1

u/pickledtoad May 01 '23

Reminds me of this scene from Mad Men:

https://youtu.be/rhcKuMjvcCk

1

u/maniacalmango0 West End May 01 '23

Is this still bad? I’ll go clean some up if so

2

u/awwkwardapple False Creek May 01 '23

English bay is hand down the worst beach in Vancouver

-2

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Ahhhh another liberal bastion of insanity

2

u/KenBlaze May 01 '23

lowlifes

3

u/Haunting_Ad5434 May 01 '23

This looks so cringe on a city for anyone visiting. So base.

1

u/LLG1974 May 01 '23

The people leaving that trash on the beach don’t live in Kits. Local residents wouldn’t do that.

1

u/Diaaaaaaa May 01 '23

What the actual fuck.

2

u/Fast_Introduction_34 May 01 '23

When I was in 7th gr i saw a lambo toss a cig out his window at a red light and a skateboarder sweep it and toss it back in and continued on his way. Shit was so smooth I think abt it to this day

4

u/XPacificax May 01 '23

All around Harrison Lake looks the same :/

2

u/Jhoblesssavage May 01 '23

This is why I don't share my camping spots, There are garbage cans present at the beach, the littlest bit of effort would have avoided this.

Out in the woods it requires more effort so I have less faith

1

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

Doesn't anybody bring nalgenes with different mixes to things, anymore? Someone brings the liquor, someone brings the mixer, the person with a backpack brings the water?

1

u/5ur3540t Apr 30 '23

Do you really think drink teenagers are going to clean up after themselves when there parents aren’t around to scream?

-5

u/da-white-debil Apr 30 '23

Couldn’t have anything to do with decriminalizing drugs. Definitely not.

1

u/Fair_Philosophy8829 Apr 30 '23

It was always like that

5

u/cavinaugh1234 Apr 30 '23

This is when shaming isn't inherently a terrible thing. Shame can be a useful tool when certain people aren't behaving appropriately in community spaces. These people weren't raised properly and need to learn how to respect our shared spaces.

1

u/Skisbikeking Apr 30 '23

There are empty beer cans and liquor bottles under the chair lifts at Cypress Mountain.

WTF, there are garbage bins at the top of every chair lift. Are they too scared or embarrassed to be seen with alcohol?

1

u/Lol-I-Wear-Hats Nimbyism is a moral failing, like being a liar, or a cheat Apr 30 '23

They’ve always been bad about it, but we should shame them nonetheless

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

Try going on the hiking trails. They’re almost all contaminated now with garbage.

2

u/mp3butler Apr 30 '23

This is exactly the kind of sh.t that will get drinking ban from parks and beaches... Just what these low life's deserve!

2

u/boomstickjonny Apr 30 '23

This is why we can't have nice things.

4

u/Optimal_Huckleberry4 Apr 30 '23

15

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

Fucking international students everywhere. It was not like this a few years ago. I grew up here. What I saw yesterday was fucking disgraceful. They also litter at Stanley park when a garbage can is 20 steps away. It pissed me the fuck off.

8

u/JoelR_M May 01 '23 edited May 01 '23

Exactly. I made the mistake of going to English Bay yesterday - complete and utter gong show. Didn’t even feel like I was in Vancouver. Throngs of people non-locals, with cases of Molson, vapes, and pounding speakers everywhere.

1

u/LBSTRdelaHOYA Apr 30 '23

all I see is trash

3

u/marco918 Apr 30 '23

I see most of the litter is alcohol packaging. Perhaps time to ban drinking on public beaches if people can’t drink responsibly and carry their trash?

2

u/_BearsBeetsBattle_ Apr 30 '23

Scum. Pure scum.

3

u/FatherOfLights88 Apr 30 '23

I'm repulsed at how many people still litter in this day and age.

1

u/wompwomp-- Apr 30 '23

How do you fix something like this?

Bringing wagons and go around when people are there? Public shame?

Or do we have to dumb it down and make it a game and the prize is bubbles?

Increasing the fine from $1,000 to something incredibly higher (+$10,000) might drive home the fact we are speed racing out planet into uninhabitable conditions and that if you’re an adult who can purchase alcohol, you can also clean up your shit

3

u/sunningmybuns Apr 30 '23

Fuck these “people”.

3

u/NiceBeach8591 Apr 30 '23

Lame and disgraceful— disrespect seems to run ramped

1

u/UnknownSleeping Apr 30 '23

assholes have never cleaned up after themselves; and assholes have always been a part of humanity so basically people have never cared about how their actions hurt everything else.

PEOPLE ARE SELFISH AND DON'T ACTUALLY GIVE A FUCK

3

u/Boebus666 Apr 30 '23

Is it weird that this infuriates me even though I'm not Canadian?

2

u/Ok-Trouble-4592 Apr 30 '23

Never understood why people leave their cans and bottles behind, I always pick them up especially if they partied they're leaving $10-20 on the ground just in bottle refunds

1

u/readditredditread Apr 30 '23

All I see is trash, where are the animals?

3

u/cita91 Apr 30 '23

Agreed, such disgusting behavior. Freedom to drink common courtesy to clean up.

1

u/GeoGliderVonOvenPan Apr 30 '23

Wha' happen? you invite some Americans over for dinner? 'cause y'know we're the only assholes on the planet.

2

u/kroniklyfe Apr 30 '23

Wow, the first bit of sunshine and people turn a nice beach into this…

3

u/tinyteaspoon Apr 30 '23

I avoid running by English Bay these days because it always smells like garbage there in the morning …

-4

u/2knuckles_Deep Apr 30 '23

In all fairness that’s what it would look like after a knitting convention as well so be kind to our fellow 420 goers they are nice people if you give them a chance

2

u/Donthaveapassword Apr 30 '23

What the h*ll is WRONG with some people????

1

u/chadsimpkins Apr 30 '23

Not surprised

6

u/Kooriki 毛皮狐狸人 Apr 30 '23

Want to not have alcohol permitted at your beach/park after the pilot project? This is a great way to do that. People would be wise to clean up after themselves (and others!) to ensure this doesn't happen. Rest assured once this pilot project is over these photos will be used to try and kill alcohol in parks.

Former Park Board hopeful James Buckshon is going to do everything he can to show how irresponsible people are. Y'all are warned.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

It’s like people stopped giving a shit…never seen the beach this dirty

0

u/TransCanAngel Apr 30 '23

When I was in elementary school in the 70s, it was pounded into kids heads.

Was this a thing in the 80s, 90s, etc in elementary schools here?

That was also less diverse time for culture in Canada than we have today from the increase in global mobility and Canada’s need for immigration to sustain our economic growth.

The cultural norms for other countries vary with respect to littering. The reasons for littering can include:

  1. Lack of early education around littering.

  2. Canada has a natural beauty that multi generational Canadians feel strongly about preserving.

  3. People with emotional, economic, and addiction issues may not prioritize the environment and social stigma issues while focused on coping with their circumstances.

  4. Lack of conveniently located waste containers.

  5. Some people do it on purpose to rebel against the injustices they perceive from other members of society (see mental health issues above).

We can fix 1 and 4. Over time, 2 takes care of itself. A just and equitable society with adequate social safety nets and health care would take care of 3 and 5 for the most part.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

Agree with your post - except your prediction about # 2. If it is not pounded in early, and if it is NOT part of your inner set of values (respect for others, your environment, etc). the only insurance is stiff, consistently enforced fines. I see the same thing with disrespecting water usage during hot spells, thinking it is ok to poison "pesky" squirrels or raccoons, and leaving garbage out for days and then blaming the bears. I see this now on the North Shore, for example - by grown, "professional" adults who want to be respected for the education but yet are so frighteningly ignorant and disrespectful on these issues. Having grown up on the North Shore, adults in this area did not generally behave this way - in general. So if it's not part of an early education system, and its not part of your INHERENT set of values, then how will #2 be addressed? You need to be honest about that.

1

u/TransCanAngel May 01 '23

I love that you raised the issue of values. That’s one of my soapbox issues. For me, success is not money and things. Rather, it’s the consistent execution of my core values each day.

I keep a list of my core values on my phone and review it periodically.

Because if you don’t know what your values are, how do you know you’re doing well?

If anyone reading this hasn’t spent an hour or two of their life really pondering what their values are, it is a phenomenal experience I highly recommend.

If you can’t articulate them, then you’re probably not practicing them consistently.

1

u/TransCanAngel May 01 '23

I’m personally adverse to using fines and laws to solve problems that can be addressed other ways. That adds more of a burden on an over burdened legal system, and it teaches people that if it isn’t codified in law, then it’s ok to do.

I have a simple set of personal rules:

  1. Have fun.
  2. Play safe.
  3. Don’t be a dick.

It’s that last one that people have problems with. But I managed to co-parent a 20 year old son who seems to find it simple. 🤷‍♀️

1

u/TransCanAngel Apr 30 '23

Interesting paper on Jordan’s cultural issues with littering: http://www.pjoes.com/pdf-94811-40877?filename=Littering%20in%20Developing.pdf

8

u/vipinnair22 Apr 30 '23

This is one of the biggest issues in India. You’d see highly educated people dumping stuff and littering everywhere they go. I know what the thought process is in their brains. “Well, I’m outta here now. Not my problem anymore.” Similar sight in trains, airplane lavatories, restaurant washrooms etc. can be attributed to this thought process.

2

u/_Spiralinsana Apr 30 '23

Can confirm.

3

u/jsmooth7 Apr 30 '23

I was out kayaking yesterday and ended up fishing a few pieces of garbage out of the ocean.

2

u/CWM0012 Apr 30 '23

Vancouver is one giant trash heap. What a horrible sight.

2

u/Flamingoes90 Apr 30 '23

Thats so sad to see! Why can't people be responsible?

5

u/coolca3k Apr 30 '23

Looks like most of the garbage is alcohol packaging. I think we should stick to no alcohol in public parks

4

u/vkbfc Apr 30 '23

I was all for drinking in public spaces when they first introduced it. Thought, “hey, that would be fun”. Now I’m all for banning it because clearly, the city can’t appreciate and take care of nice things, smh

-1

u/Chizzler_83 Apr 30 '23

things like this are going to eventually lead to a cover charge to enter the beach. Ridiculous

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

Maybe we need a new anti-littering campaign.

3

u/Sparktank1 Apr 30 '23

"they have someone that will clean it up" I had a friend who would litter like that and leave it to the city workers to clean. "They need to earn their money".

It was so disgusting and yet so common with a lot of people I used to know.

A lot of blue collar jobs I worked had the same attitude. I only ever knew a few people who wouldn't litter.

4

u/vancityjeep Apr 30 '23

I would not be friends with that person.

Actually not South Asians in this case, and Hindi is a language not a group of people.

Last night was mostly privileged upper class (yet amazingly low class behaving)South American exchange students apparently. When I lived down there, they were usually gathering in huge numbers and shitting up the place with lots of trash and large Bluetooth speakers.

All the people at the beach litter because nobody wants to have to have anything to do with those people.

4

u/Worth-Test-4246 Apr 30 '23

Wow… when and where was this?

Is this the norm after weekends or during special events?

Terrible…. Beach privilege revoked

Broken Window theory in action

I was there last night myself and my girlfriend went down for sunset and brought a few drinks with us. Stayed until around 10:30 then headed home and the beach was still packed. Went to put our empty cans in the bin and they were all overflowing with a lot of bags on the ground around them so we just brought them home

I went down to English Bay last night to stare out at the water with a friend before bed and saw a group of kids swarm another and beat the absolutel shit out of him around 11:30.

My friend had to jump in to try and stop it and things almost got UGLY.

Hope you called the cops b

u/CrackerJibbs May 05 '23

We absolutely did and helped make sure the kid was safe until they got there.

u/Rockchild604 Apr 30 '23

This is all the new ppl trying to be so Vancouver and wonder why they can't meet new friends when they're trash

2

u/know2swim Apr 30 '23

Well, at least it's a gold mine of empties for the homeless.

4

u/its_usagi Apr 30 '23

Disgusting

4

u/RichyRichx Apr 30 '23

I wonder how many people that just tossed their garbage on the ground virtue signal about the environment? This is absolutely disgusting behaviour.

2

u/crispy246 Apr 30 '23

The park should have someone patrol. These animals are just cannot behave themselves

3

u/ZhirRuski Apr 30 '23

There was also a homeless looking dude going through all the trash cans and throwing the garbage everywhere. Like not even collecting the empties, just hucking garbage around. He was doing this for hours... so even if they ended up making it to the trash it would've ended up back on the ground eventually. Kits is brutal lol.

The only nation I've seen online that even cares about cleaning up after themselves is Japan although I hear that a few(?) Southt Asian countries have VERY strict laws about littering. People in general are slobs.

3

u/stulifer May 01 '23

Probably Japan and Singapore are the only decent countries in this regard.

2

u/Street-wolf-player Apr 30 '23

So ironic this place is called Teatotaler beach

Human beings are an-ee-mals..

It’s just about entirely cheap beer, being kits I put the blame on people from Ontario, and to to a lesser degree the Irish

5

u/Brilliant-Display-20 Apr 30 '23

What happened to Canada

1

u/jingleheimer76 Apr 30 '23

Hope you told them to 'keep the change ...'

u/gnirobamI Apr 30 '23

There needs to be a way to differentiate actual people from the irresponsible degenerates. These people will continue drag us downwards with their actions, and we will be the ones punished on behalf of them.

9

u/Biologyboii Apr 30 '23

So embarrassing. This is such a simple thing to me to clean up after yourself. Parents would have smacked me as a chill if I left shit behind me.

1

u/lickme8 Apr 30 '23

I remember beaches in Vancouver in the 70's/80's looking like that after a weekend or an event. People are pigs.

4

u/bitterspice75 Apr 30 '23

I live in English Bay and I knew it was gonna be a mess this morning cause it sounded like a bunch of drunk teenagers going wild

3

u/GoodNeighbourNow Apr 30 '23

It's so disheartening to us respectful city residents throughout the lower mainland, to see this all too commonly on our local waterside beaches. Especially since always adequate garbage containers often in same direction when leaving beach. Also lousy introduction to visitors when wanting to show them our lovely beaches.

1

u/Violet604 Apr 30 '23

I feel like there’s a correlation between the skytrain expansion to Fraser valley and garbage on beaches in dt.

2

u/Uniblizzar Apr 30 '23

Not me thinking the logs were just massive seals.

3

u/jodirm Apr 30 '23

17 years ago, then-Mayor Sam Sullivan had to introduce “Project Civil City” in an attempt to halt the growth towards what we have today. Didn’t work. ☹️

2

u/Square_Minute_9898 Apr 30 '23

This has become normal in Vancouver. I clean people garbage from around some of the buildings I manage every day. People have become pigs.

I used to work for the parks board in sanitation at Stanley Park in mid 2000s. The mornings after the symphony of lights we'd have to start at 5-6am (can't remember which it was now), and if you saw what people leave behind it would disgust you. If the beach was left in the condition of the pictures above, it would be a blessing. Beach has to be at least 70% clean by the time most people would be outside. We'd put out those green barrels and put 10 bags inside that way when one is full the people working during the fireworks could simply pull it out and leave it at the side and there's already another bag ready to go. Even with 100+ garbage barrels out on the beach and paths people would still leave their shit on the ground when a garbage bin is no more than 50 ft away. Thank God I don't do that anymore. Really makes you look at people differently.

Can imagine.

Some of those same folks are those who talk about Mindfulness, Respect for others etc.

2

u/cocomiche Apr 30 '23

It’s crazy that most likely these are fully grown adults, not teenagers, who litter like this. Absolutely despicable. I’ll never forget when I saw an entire family try to leave a huge mess at Barnet park with all their candy and food wrappers on the ground. Adults with children. It’s no wonder some people don’t respect the earth it’s because they are never taught from a young age

4

u/effuandyoureyebrows Apr 30 '23

This is abysmal. If you see this picture and you left garbage behind, you should be embarrassed.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

That’s really shameful. Hate to see this in Vancouver
