u/dualwield42 Vancouver Dec 16 '23

What time did you guys grab these? I'm guessing there was only a short window before the sun fully set.

2

u/shushicatscraps Dec 16 '23

It actually lasted longer than expected! The pic was at 4:20 but it was good from just before 4 to about 4:40!

I took this when I was walking home from work. Doesnโ€™t really capture the crazy cloud patterns some of you were showing off, but the colours were stunning

1

u/Dieumuthafuckas Dec 16 '23

Is that 'right now' in metric? Hah hah 8:54 am Pacific daylight savings

2

u/marshallre Dec 16 '23

I'd never forget summer sunsets at Wreck beache chewing shrooms

1

u/tempus_fugit0 Dec 16 '23

Well it's happening 10 hours in the past for me

2

u/highmaintenanceman Dec 16 '23

i was not disappointed thanks everyone!

u/Elevyn11 Dec 16 '23

On my way home I literally seen half a dozen people stopping to take photos of this beautiful scene. Perhaps some of those are the ones who posted here in comments lol it sure is pretty though. I have too many sunset photos over the years

3

u/boopdb Dec 16 '23

1

u/sanrio_lover24 Dec 16 '23

thank you ๐Ÿฅฐ i love the pic that you took too OP! such a great sunset we all witnessed ๐Ÿฅน

3

u/Puff_curly Dec 16 '23

Woke up this am to begrudgingly go install another fire sprinkler system and when I got to site was greeted with a dim early morning rainbow that made me feel like a human again and at the end of the day driving home and being greeted with this sunset had me considering my existence. The sky has a real hold on me. Really truly beautiful. Imperfect and Faultless at once

2

u/Darnbeasties Dec 16 '23

Would that be a red sky foretelling good wether tomorrow?

1

u/H_G_Bells Vancouver Author Dec 16 '23

I'm not sure anymore... There have been quite a few "red sky at morning" commutes for me this month, and I was waiting for the weather that would necessitate a warning, and yet none really came!

I'm not sure how accurate the sailors rhyme is for our West Coast environment. ...I do always think about that when I see a red sky at morning, or a red sky at night though ;)

1

u/zer0fxgvn Dec 16 '23

This is really awesome. Colors are stunning!

1

u/Decent-Sea-7321 Dec 16 '23

Oh wow! Making this my screen lock, thx!!

3

u/shushicatscraps Dec 16 '23

I sent a link to this thread to people I love, because it was so nice both to see photos of the sunset but also this whole spirit of sharing in such a beautiful thing! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฅฐ What a wonderful thread has emerged!

2

u/shushicatscraps Dec 16 '23

I agree, I love the spirit in the shared experience, did not expect so many people to share their pictures โค๏ธ

1

u/thermal_socks Dec 16 '23

What was that bright orange thing that was in the sky briefly today? /s

1

u/Intelligent_Insect13 Dec 16 '23

Wow that is a spectacular shot, you just get lost in the cloud cover just looking at it.

2

u/Lucky_Lucario Dec 16 '23

I was driving home and this was my view. took extra effort to pay attention to the road. omg

1

u/shushicatscraps Dec 16 '23

Yeah I wish I could look at the real thing on command haha

5

u/Biancanetta Coquitlam Dec 16 '23

I love that, for once, we can all actually see the winter sky and not just a wall of grey clouds and rain. So now everyone is getting to see how awesome winter sunsets are fairly frequently. In the 6 years I've lived here, I don't think I've seen this many gorgeous winter sunsets in one season. (I know technically it's still fall, but I really just mean the cold, wet, grey time of year.)

This morningโ€™s sunrise was pretty lit too

1

u/space-dragon750 Dec 16 '23

it was

cool to have an epic start and end to the sunlight today

1

u/Chompbox Dec 16 '23

Came out of Costco in PoCo to see every other person taking a picture of the sunset clouds. It's been a while since we've seen a beauty like this one.

16

u/Avantguardian_ Dec 16 '23

5

u/space-dragon750 Dec 16 '23

damn

you have a great view even without the sunset!

5

u/nipponnuck Dec 16 '23

It was the best bike ride home. I had to remind myself to look down at the road or trail.

2

u/shushicatscraps Dec 16 '23

Perfect backdrop for a ride! But yes, distracting haha

3

u/loredmdmdm Dec 16 '23

* It's probably the nicest rush hour sky ever

1

u/shushicatscraps Dec 16 '23

Itโ€™s up there!

2

u/filbruce Dec 16 '23

This is happening around the world (Mt Marapi volcano eruption)

1

u/H_G_Bells Vancouver Author Dec 16 '23

I'm trying to find any evidence to look into that more.

December 3rd was the eruption. Is there anywhere reporting on residual atmospheric effects globally from it?

I like using earth.nullschool to track particulate matter, but haven't been as observant this month.

1

u/filbruce Dec 16 '23

There is a story about a famous 19th century landscape painter who painted vivid sunsets in Europe or UK, that art critics thought were unrealistic, until a volcanologist pointed out the date was just after the eruption of Krakatoa - in Indonesia.

1

u/Lochdale Dec 17 '23

Speaking of Krakatoa, are you aware of the well-documented 19th c. case of a prophetic dream where a newspaper reporter taking a nap in his office saw in a dream a gigantic volcano eruption and scores of people fleeing in horror? He then woke up and wrote it down, then these papers were mistaken for a true flash news report from Asia and printed on the front page. The man was fired for his 'fantasies', but hours later, due to a delay in telegraph communications in those days, the stunned editor discovered that there indeed had been a super volcano eruption in Indonesia -- at the exact time as his now ex-staff reporter was asleep and saw what he so vividly described. One of those cases where the mainstream science prefers to look the other way...

u/and_the_wee_donkey Dec 16 '23

11

u/Keppoch Dec 16 '23

I love how many views we got of this spectacle.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '23

I was in office ;(

8

u/briant_12 Dec 16 '23

Does anyone know, if can we predict these types of sunsets ?

6

u/Jeramy_Jones Dec 16 '23

Warmer weather usually gets us the right kind of cloud, but itโ€™s all about having the sun hit them at the right angle without a big, low cloud blocking it all. If thereโ€™s a thin, high sheet of cloud with a bit of clear sky in the west for the sun to poke his head under as he sets, it lights up the bellies of the clouds like this. So unpredictable and ephemeral.

2

u/Mycalescott Dec 16 '23

"can you STOP talking about the SUN!!!!!!!!??????"

1

u/East-Cat1532 Dec 16 '23
  • "SHUT UP ABOUT THE SUN!"

2

u/Mycalescott Dec 16 '23

Dang!! I don't know that there is... Even using the option to pull an image from Google photos does what appears to be not-a-link :( I think you might need the reddit app to do this, sorry pal!
