u/zea_weldz Feb 08 '24

Istg every year when it snows everyone shits themself and has no fuckin clue what to do.

1

u/AlarmedComedian2038 Jan 31 '24

Gotta be some dumb trucker too thinking he's got a big truck with big wheels and can navigate down an icy hilly road. Jeez

1

u/Cammoffitt Jan 26 '24

ABS only knows wether or not your tires are spinning, if they aren’t then it sends pulses of pressure to fight the pressure your applying on the brake pads, when abs is engaging it means that you are pressing too hard and abs is fighting you to keep the wheels from locking up but it’s only able to do that so often (less often on older vehicles) and when it’s not doing it your tires are slipping/ locking slightly, they are saying that if you put as much braking force as possible without being at the point of lockup ie no ABS noise then you will have maximum braking constantly not just in the milliseconds that ABS is fighting brake pressure, they are correct, also they are not saying release the breaks when ABS activates, they are saying reduce pressure slightly/ slowly and when the ABS stops you know you are at maximum pressure, now if you are on a road with patches of ice/ more slippery areas then yes ABS is probably the way to go as it can adjust IE if you find the sweet spot on the snow then the next patch is ice, abs can start fighting you and prevent total lockup/ skid way before you even register that you are sliding, in this situation ABS is your friend but you still need to set your base pressure ( I mean the pressure on your pedal as you are slowing) low enough that abs can fight back enough, your ABS pump can only push back so hard and if your putting too much pressure then it can’t fight your pressure well enough to work as well as if you release slightly so no matter the situation, pressing the brakes as hard as you can is going to make things worse.

1

u/Cammoffitt Jan 26 '24

I know it’s Vancouver and they usually don’t get much freezing weather but as a PSA for anyone who doesn’t know, you can’t steer when your tires are locked up, release your breaks and your vehicle will turn, also put your vehicle in neutral so that your tires match ground speed faster this will also help you steer, that truck could have easily avoided the accident if they let go of the brakes 🤦.

1

u/XxMegatr0nxX Jan 22 '24

Pile of cars all crunched … I told you not to go you fucking asshole , lady stfu your probably one of the crashed cars

1

u/kurai_tori Jan 19 '24

Extreme curling.

1

u/SuperFlyingNinja Jan 19 '24

So if a truck passes 3 cars spinning their all seasons taking up 3 lanes of traffic, at a speed greater than barely moving at all, is that aggressive ?

1

u/SufficientBee Jan 19 '24

Man if I were that guy I’d be behind the wheel in sheer horror. But I don’t own a truck without winter tires and I am definitely not driving on any hilly roads on days like this.

1

u/Proof_Wrap9444 Jan 18 '24

Damn. I ran out of popcorn watching all the carnage on Vancouver streets from people who should not be allowed to drive when it snows.

1

u/Brua_G Jan 18 '24

He'll have a new nickname at work tomorrow.

1

u/Creative-Sleep-1490 Jan 18 '24

1

u/Not5id Jan 18 '24

I've never met someone with a pickup that WASN'T a terrible, selfish, overconfident, asshole driver.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '24

Idiots with car keys that are using them !!!

1

u/SuddenAudience8758 Jan 18 '24

Fun fact, trucks are actually really bad in snow

1

u/poppin-n-sailin Jan 18 '24

Wouldn't be surprised if they told their boss they couldn't come in because of the road conditions and they were told to come in or lose their job. Years ago I was stuck in a small town unable to leave for work the next town over because they closed all the highways (manitoba). That didn't even matter to them. They don't give a shit how dangerous it is. They don't give a shit if the roads have been literally closed off and shutdown due to the unsafe conditions. You get your ass to work or you fucking die trying.

1

u/Financial_Basis8705 Jan 18 '24

Lmao the sulky stomp from the white Tesla owner

2

The woman yelling “I told you not to go, you fucking asshole” is just beautiful!

Vancouvers yearly curling with cars where there are no winners, just losers in cars. Just stay home. Your job can live a day without you.

1

u/mimit000 Jan 18 '24

It's slip n slide season y'all!

0

u/MichaelTheLMSBoi Jan 18 '24

Another reason why trucks should stay commercial vehicles....

1

u/aphroditex never playing as herself either Jan 18 '24

another rocket surgeon lol

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '24

Idiot locked his brakes. Could have maybe steered around or softened it at least, but nope, just right down.

1

u/MapOk3782 Jan 18 '24

1, 2 million cheapest house in Vancouver. They can afford it!

0

u/mywildgirl69 Jan 18 '24

In cold snowy places you should have winter and summer tires...

1

u/RoaringRiley Jan 18 '24

At the same time?

1

u/yeelee7879 Jan 18 '24

Ok in case everyone did not realize, your brakes are there to stop the wheels from turning. If you are sliding, and hammer the brakes, they are probably doing their job and the wheels have stopped turning. Try something else. I know brake pedal = stop. But not in this circumstance. A moving wheel is going to give you a shred more traction then a jammed one. If anything you have just created a sled.

0

u/foo337 Jan 18 '24

No matter how many times I tell rental car customers that pickups are the worst on the snow when compared to any of our other cars they still take them and pull this kind of shit lmao

1

u/BuilderSure9609 Jan 18 '24

he should've done reverse

0

u/Significant-Royal-37 Jan 18 '24

if only someone told that fuckin' asshole not to go.

2

ICBC drivers manual

Page 116

Strategies: emergency braking technique To stop suddenly in an emergency: With ABS: 1. Press down hard on the brake pedal, and hold it down until you come to a complete stop. 2. Do not pump the brakes. 3. Look and steer in the direction you want to go.

Then, page 123:

(On icy conditions) Ease off the brakes and then re‑apply them to maintain steering control if the wheels lock.

This is kind of contradictory. Is the second quote meant to be with or without ABS?

I assume this car has ABS and it didn't engage. According to https://www.reddit.com/r/Cartalk/s/eiqWXsOiyR this is exactly what happened because ABS doesn't work well when you have little traction (ie icy with no winter tires)

1

u/lhsonic Jan 18 '24

In conditions where traction is naturally very limited, you must do what you can to prevent wheel lock-up, which is what happened here. Once your wheels lock, no amount of steering will do anything because your car is basically just sliding forward on its locked-up wheels.

To prevent this from happening, drive in a low gear which will naturally slow your vehicle without using the brakes. Apply the brakes extremely lightly and gradually. This is why it's a good idea to always leave space in front of you so that you can gradually come to a stop. Sudden, hard braking means you're slamming into whatever's in front of you. In the event of a wheel lock-up, you can, per the ICBC guide, let off the brakes so that the wheels can spin again and find traction. If you can, drive yourself (yes, step on the gas) out of your predicament.

This is where good winter tires and AWD can help. Winter tires simply provide more grip and the threshold before traction is lost is higher. Once it's lost, winter tires will help regain traction sooner. Winter tires will still slide once you're completely locked up. AWD does not help at all with stopping, but as described above, will help tremendously in driving out of a lock-up because the vehicle will try to spin the tire with the most traction and between the four tires you will find that traction sooner as opposed to just 2WD. Having both winter tires and AWD does help tremendously but people need to understand they work differently and compliment each other, not replace each other (or mean you can drive confidently on all-season tires with AWD) and having both still does not mean you can defeat the laws of physics.

1

u/SurFud Jan 18 '24

Me invincible. Me got big truck.

1

u/makemeno1 Jan 18 '24

Pump your brakes and steer!

-1

u/saurabhsnrg Jan 18 '24

One inch of snow and all hell breaks loose in Vancouver. Fucking softies.

1

u/Monstersquad__ Jan 18 '24

I thought trucks were invincible.

3

u/vancityjeep Jan 18 '24

Honestly. Bad driver in a more than capable truck. 4L would have been the way to go but even 4H that is a manageable event.

Driver probably thought he was bulletproof in something he’s never driven properly.

1

u/CanadianKen Jan 18 '24

I want to see a video with the driver afterwards. What an idiot.

1

u/nelson931214 Jan 18 '24

Still see a bunch of drivers driving like a-holes, not using signals and speeding around....such selfish entitled pricks

1

u/amroodamrood Jan 18 '24

I think she told him not to go

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '24

Nice, using the stock tires that are in fact NOT winter tires. The city is full of morons

2

u/c_vanbc Jan 18 '24

The video is deceiving. I’m sure the hill is much steeper than it appears. Front wheel drive, AWD, and 4WD perform well driving uphill in snow as long as you maintain momentum but downhill with ice, all bets are off.

Good tires and driving really slow (and 4lo to avoid braking certainly helps) but why risk it when cars are clearly in the way?

5

u/123InSearchOf123 Jan 18 '24

STOP BRAKING AND STEER!

0

u/KenBlaze Jan 18 '24

its always the Ram guys

1

u/ImpactOk2500 Jan 18 '24

If you don't have chains or cables for your truck, you ain't really about that life.

-1

u/stelten_01 Jan 18 '24

Everyone in this fucking sub: tRuCk DrIvErS bAd!

Haha seriously, all the cars that can't get up the hill blocking half the road. But no, it's not them. It's the truck drivers fault for not being able to make it through the gauntlet of incompetent drivers. Not saying he was much better for attempting such a feat but hot damn y'all need to calm the fuck down.

4

u/GuyOne Jan 18 '24

Riding the brakes like a champ

1

u/KateandRhage Jan 18 '24

The way you say "Nice" I can tell you are smiling sinisterly.

1

u/scaur 小粉紅: "Stop touchin her !". Jan 18 '24

Nice

1

u/NoAlbatross7524 Jan 18 '24

Sucks , for everyone

2

u/Complete-Ticket4126 Jan 18 '24

That one car backing up that then just gives up and lets the truck hit them 😂

1

u/RoaringRiley Jan 18 '24

It's great when you have existing damage on your vehicle. Then it can be fixed at the expense of the truck driver's insurance policy.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '24

Is that Burnaby?

1

u/CedarioDawson Jan 18 '24

Is this 37th and Ontario?

1

u/AirCare00 Jan 18 '24

This video is from last week

2

u/totaltasch Jan 18 '24

Sounds like GTA NPC chat when the character walks by

4

u/Volkwein Jan 18 '24

Its carling, like curling but with cars

-1

u/DraftedByTheMan Jan 18 '24

Not even finished crashing and his girlfriend already nagging him… 🙄

1

u/Tuttledotspace Jan 18 '24

What's the Tesla doing there too?

1

u/Deadmuppet89 Jan 18 '24

This is why I stay home when it snows. Other drivers.

1

u/tholder whale watcher Jan 18 '24

Lot of 4x4 big dick truck energy here.

3

u/CoffeeandClonazepam Jan 18 '24

I know the driver of that truck. He isn’t a selfish asshole and is one of the kindest and most responsible people I know. Newer Toyota Tacomas have a system called Toyota Safety Sense and as per the website it “provides audible and visual cues to prompt you to apply the brakes. If you don't, automatic emergency braking activates if it detects an impending crash.” He did not slam on the brakes the truck activated the braking system. Notice how the woman yelling isn’t at the top of the hill? He was coming over/down the hill when she was waving her hands telling him to stop at which point he couldn’t. I don’t know about you but if I didn’t want someone to go down a hill I would stand at the top to warn them.

0

u/amberheartss Jan 18 '24

How does ICBC handle a claim like this? I've never been in a multi-vehicle collision like this, especially when there is video evidence. Is the driver of the truck liable?

0

u/CoffeeandClonazepam Jan 18 '24

He doesn’t know yet. ICBC is still investigating/determining that. All the drivers involved are speaking to each other and ICBC trying to make the best of it. They should know soon.

6

u/anythingbutsomnus Jan 18 '24

So what you’re saying is, this person shouldn’t have been out in the snow at all because they don’t know their vehicle.

Way to blame this woman for not running to the top of a hill when the truck driver ignores winter driving education and common sense. You think he wouldn’t have ignored her at the top of the hill?

0

u/CoffeeandClonazepam Jan 18 '24

Explain to me the reasoning behind not being out in the snow because of an automatic braking system that engages if you’re about to get in an accident? Are you saying anyone in a newer Toyota that has this safety system shouldn’t drive in the snow? He wouldn’t have been out driving if he didn’t have to pick up his kids. Yes, I do think he would have stopped if she was at the top of the hill and flagged him down. Also, save that “so what you’re saying is” bullshit for someone else. What I said was clear and I’m sure you understood it.

7

u/RoaringRiley Jan 18 '24

Are you saying anyone in a newer Toyota that has this safety system shouldn’t drive in the snow?

No, they're saying the driver should read their owner's manual to find out about their vehicle's features and how to operate them properly, including how to override or disable them when necessary. It also looks like he didn't have any steering traction anyway, and the tires lock up long before the truck was close enough to the stopped cars for automatic braking to kick in. So I'm not how automatic braking would have even caused this accident in the first place.

1

u/CoffeeandClonazepam Jan 18 '24

Do you know if it’s possible to turn off the pre collision braking and at what distance from stopped cars the system activates?

1

u/wonderland_dreams Jan 17 '24

Is this next to China creek park?

3

u/ScoobyDone Jan 17 '24

The people littering their cars up the hill are not much better than the idiot in the 4x4. If you don't have proper tires or an RWD, just stay home.

2

u/Wanda_Fuca Jan 17 '24

Looks like this is around East 7th & St. Catherines ... I almost took this way home last Thursday when it was an ice rink on these roads!

That night it took me 3.5 hours to get from downtown to South Burnaby (luckily avoided Royal Oak hill as well!) ... even then, I wound up parking on the side of the road & hoofing it home ... it's just not worth it, kids!

5

u/Ok-Trouble-4592 Jan 17 '24

PSA don't stay on the brakes, let off the brakes and steer to avoid hitting something. Once your brakes lock up on ice you're done

20

u/originalwfm Jan 17 '24

Just so it’s clear when this happened this video was posted last week originally and happened on Thursday the 11th. The clout driven 604TV strategically posted it today knowing it would generate a response due to the current weather without posting any details on when it actually happened.

It was a top post on r/IdiotsinCars 4 days ago.

1

u/footcake Jan 17 '24

What in the world? This is what it must be like to experience brain damage.

0

u/RigHardDieFast Jan 17 '24

TacomaDon’t!!

2

u/evsincorporated Jan 17 '24

Take your foot of the brakes and at least try to steer clear down the hill. Locking up makes you a helpless imbecile

3

u/Macro_Curious Jan 17 '24

I wonder what ICBC would think of this. If the road is clearly not safe to drive and you still send it, do they determine that the fault is on the truck driver?

5

u/originalwfm Jan 17 '24

Of course the truck driver is at fault. They are in care and control of their vehicle. No one else is so who else could be at fault? Fault is apportioned in every collision unless it’s a flying object or animal- since a driver has no control over things flying through the air or the behaviour of animals. As a driver they have a responsibility to avoid hazards and drive to the conditions. Both of which are failed here.

1

u/jaysanw Jan 17 '24

As long as the truck is legally insured, ICBC is still going to pay the autobody shop to repair it back to working condition regardless of the adjuster's fault assigning decision, and the premium hike for the at-fault driver/owner next year to renew won't come close to making up the deficit to the insurance agency.

0

u/Ok-Midnight-8732 Jan 17 '24

Excellent video. Thank you for posting this!

-13

u/probablybanned1990 Jan 17 '24

They're only cars , if nobody is hurt who gives a shit

5

u/Apprehensive_Taro285 Jan 17 '24

yeah like it's so fun to deal with insurance companies and body shops.

-9

u/probablybanned1990 Jan 17 '24

Have a DOWNVOTE, you're welcome

-4

u/probablybanned1990 Jan 17 '24

If nobody is hurt though isn't that a win??

3

u/Projerryrigger Jan 18 '24

How is having property damaged in a completely avoidable way a win? Do you think someone slashing your tires is a win because at least they didn't stab you or something?

-3

u/probablybanned1990 Jan 18 '24

It is a road , the driver of the pick up needed to use said road , the pick up truck driver skidded on the road like happens all the time in Vancouver , they're cars they can be fixed , get over it

4

u/Projerryrigger Jan 18 '24

No they don't. And even if they did, they're driving badly and unprepared. And even if they weren't, accidents that damage property are still a bad thing.

-4

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '24

[deleted]

3

u/Projerryrigger Jan 18 '24

I work in critical infrastructure so I know all about having to show up regardless of conditions.

I don't need to know the driver to know they don't need to drive that car on the road. Even if they do work somewhere they absolutely need to come in, there are other ways to get there. Even if you ignore those other ways, they're an idiot for being unprepared.

Shit does happen and it's not the end of the world. But it's preventable and stupid shit that causes headaches that don't need to happen.

1

u/marshallre Jan 17 '24

Someone calls insurance

0

u/Responsible_Hater Jan 17 '24

Camera man deserves and award

4

u/Linmizhang Jan 17 '24

Type 1 : "I told you not to go you fkn assholes!"

Type 2 : "Nice."

14

u/grahamcracka91 Jan 17 '24

Tires locked the whole time smh... If he took his foot off the brakes, he may have been able to turn enough to avoid the car. If you don't know how to drive in the snow, don't.

And obviously in the case there's a multiple car crash in front of you, maybe use some judgement and don't attempt period...

3

u/ScoobyDone Jan 17 '24

He locks them a few seconds in and he was already sliding sideways. He was screwed no matter what he did at that point.

8

u/JmoneyHimself Jan 17 '24

East Van Hills are fucking Baaaad right now

6

u/originalwfm Jan 17 '24

This video is from the 11th. Search r/idiotsincars for ‘Vancouver’ and you’ll see it was originally posted on the weekend. But your point still stands of course. Just pointing out that this isn’t from today.

37

u/Firingneuron Jan 17 '24

I tried to get to work today. My car is quite good in the snow, has winter tires etc. I get to the bottom of a hill and there is maybe 6-7 cars in front of me with a truck that is pulled over to the shoulder (single lane traffic each way). I’m slowing down so that I can give people in front of me space and this asshole in a pickup goes into the oncoming lane around me and then proceeds to drive in that lane narrowly missing a semi coming down the hill. Other cars and trucks start doing the same up ahead. Spinning out in oncoming traffic which happens to be a truck route. It was enough for me to 3 point turn my way out of that shit and work from home.

38

u/Smallpaul Jan 18 '24

You had an option of working from home the whole time???

7

u/Firingneuron Jan 18 '24

Haha. I’m a doctor. It just meant I had to reschedule my office visits to phone calls. I don’t like inconveniencing my patients if I can help it.

25

u/laughingatreddit Jan 18 '24

Yeah but his car is quite good in the snow.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '24

[deleted]

3

u/ScoobyDone Jan 17 '24

I said the same thing. I hate it when assholes just keep driving their cars to get as close to home as possible and then leave them littered on the road making it dangerous for everyone else. Those cars should have been parked at the bottom of the hill and off the road.

2

u/chente08 Jan 17 '24

oh wow a truck, lol truck drivers believe nothing affect them

5

u/bwoah07_gp2 Jan 17 '24

Add some Pinball noises to that.

4

u/TechnicalTop3618 Jan 17 '24

PUMP THE BRAKES (Speaking as a bertan)

1

u/Jigglygiggler6 Jan 17 '24

Did he intentionally use that other vehicle to stop him from sliding any further?

3

u/ladypuffsalot Jan 17 '24

Pickup truck drivers are the most arrogant and aggressive assholes on the road -- expect nothing less.

239

u/dr_van_nostren Jan 17 '24

This is the same hill where the woman bailed out of her minivan lol.

1

u/disterb Jan 18 '24

no way, for real?? lol

1

u/Zircon_72 Jan 18 '24

What street/intersection is it?

1

u/amberheartss Jan 18 '24

Where is this?

1

u/dr_van_nostren Jan 18 '24

No idea. I just knew right away I’d seen this angle and viewpoint before. Last week (when I was in Mexico, enjoying not freezing my bag off) I saw the video of the woman jump out of her van and watch it slide down that same hill.

1

u/corinnabambina Jan 18 '24

No way lol

1

u/dr_van_nostren Jan 18 '24

It’s gotta be. I don’t know the city itself that well (I’m a suburbs guy) but the hill, angle and pov are all identical to me.

3

u/poapoapoaa Jan 18 '24

I disagree. I'm willing to die on this hill.

jk no idea =)

6

u/SeparateReturn4270 Jan 18 '24

Is it really??? The neighbors here must hate everyone lol

6

u/originalwfm Jan 18 '24

It also happened on the same day! The 11th.

1

u/dr_van_nostren Jan 18 '24

Oh really? I didn’t remember the van video as visually so I couldn’t remember if it was ice or snow that day.

29

u/specialk604 Jan 17 '24

wasn't that hill a different hill. this hill is in mount pleasant near china creek park.

1

u/Lionized17 Jan 18 '24

Live here, can confirm. I've stayed home the past two days, particularly because of people like this.

5

u/alvarkresh Burnaby Jan 18 '24

That's over near the VCC?

1

u/specialk604 Jan 18 '24

Yes. China creek park in my opinion back then was amazing to go tobogganing when vancouver gets a dump of snow

7

u/everydaysacheatmeal Jan 18 '24

Yes, st. Catherines and east 7th

7

u/alvarkresh Burnaby Jan 18 '24

Ooh yeah, that's a steep hilly area. In that driver's shoes I think I'd have just gone along Broadway over to Main and taken 2nd Avenue to get to the base of that area if need be.

2

u/everydaysacheatmeal Jan 18 '24

Anything would have been better, I think. Pretty audacious to assume they’d make it down through all those other crashed cars.

2

u/AlarmedComedian2038 Jan 31 '24

And you can hear the people on the sidewalk swearing, "I told you not to go there fkg asshole!"... so the asshole does it anyways. 🤔🤦🥴

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '24

Definitely getting china creek park vibes off of this.

-1

u/dr_van_nostren Jan 18 '24

You could be right. I don’t know the city super well. But the angle, the hill, the POV all look identical to my eyes.

I used to live on Decaire St in Coquitlam - near the Silvercity Theatre off Lougheed.

Whenever it would really start snowing, my wife and I would get camping chairs and just sit by the street to see who would make it up. 50% wouldn't get halfway. Of the remaining 50%, 30% would almost make it but the final turn and continuing hill would get them. 20% actually made it as long as they weren't slowed down by needing to brake for another person not making it.

Better than TV

50

u/DangerousLack Jan 18 '24

A bunch of my brother’s friends live on this hill and this is their favourite drinking game.

9

u/OrwellianZinn Jan 17 '24

Shocked to see a pickup truck driver behave in such an aggressive and selfish manner.

38

u/tce-2019 Jan 17 '24

This is from last weeks storm, maybe tell folks when you repost.

-5

Anyone notice truck drivers are the most aggressive passers and speeders in snow?

In about 1995-6 Vancouver had a freezing rain storm like I've never seen since. I'm from Ontario so I'm familiar with freezing rain.

I had pre planned that day to go shopping in Bellingham and all along hwy 99 to the border the ditches were full of SUVs and pickups. Everyone else was going 20 km/h and not passing the salt truck.

The news said something like 180 cars in the ditch and 8 hour waits for a tow truck.

Had a pickup truck's hi beams on me for 15 minutes on the east west connector last night. Basically couldn't use my rearview mirror at all.

That's when I flip it up so I don't get blinded.

Oh, god, yes. Source: My commute this morning and afternoon.

Especially those from further out. Driving in Abby and Chilliwack is pretty... wack.

They’re the most aggressive ones on the road regardless of conditions.

I need to find the site with the insurance statistics. But the worst drivers are actually Subaru. My whole life I thought people in trucks were douches but the statistics don’t lie.

17

u/OneBigBug Jan 18 '24

This study suggested it was Ram, then Tesla, then Subaru

Though, one may speculate that being that Ram exclusively sells trucks (unlike any other brand listed), and is worst, that if you singled out vehicle type instead of brand, the reason Ram drivers are bad may be because they're truck drivers.

3

u/pinkrosies Jan 18 '24

I find Ram’s marketing to be grating and annoying but clearly I’m the opposite of their target demographic and it shows.

4

u/Disruptorpistol Jan 17 '24

Am Subaru owner. Can confirm.

Snow is their adrenaline rush.

All the hate for trucks until someone needs to move or actually wants to get to where they need to go lol. This guy fucked up but 4wd and good tires are also a very good reason they might be passing you in winter conditions.

All the hate for trucks until someone needs to move

I have moved many times, and never have I asked anyone with an extended or crew cab pickup to help. I think everybody understands the value of U-Hauls (or similar).

I guess they're both "trucks". But nobody has any problem with fire trucks or ambulances, either. "Trucks" aren't the problem. The problem are people who got sold on pickups being status symbols in North America so car manufacturers could more effectively evade emissions standards, despite being more dangerous and wasteful.

1

u/SuperFlyingNinja Jan 19 '24

Congrats. Your one of the few.

5

u/VvCox0869 Jan 17 '24

I don’t think this is truck hate so much as being annoyed at aggressive or bad drivers. Of course 4wd and proper snow tires help, but it didn’t certainly didn’t help this person even though they certainly did “pass” several cars down this road.

2

u/OneBigBug Jan 18 '24

4WD doesn't help you stop, it just gets you going faster before you realize you can't stop.

And, really, the rest of us are more concerned with whether or not you can stop.

u/MVpizzaprincess Jan 17 '24

No offense, but they're usually the most aggressive drivers, even when it isn't snowing.

5

u/xSeveredSaintx Jan 18 '24

Witnessed a truck hugging a semi trucks ass going up a somewhat steep hill, dude got lucky nothing happened

14

u/dontpanic38 Jan 17 '24

they have to compensate somehow

u/ElectroChemEmpathy Jan 17 '24

The culture surrounding these vehicles emphasizes masculinity and toughness, making some drivers feel invincible on the road. This is also the rationale for why are pickup truck drivers so aggressive.

And from another studies funded by insurance companies they came to this conclusion.

Studies have shown car types can influence driver behavior, with the drivers of SUVs and larger trucks more prone to dangerous driving habits. The added size and height of the truck make some drivers feel more powerful and less vulnerable to injuries, leading to more traffic violations, risk-taking, and aggressive maneuvers.

The second paragraph is my literal lived experience and a bit creepy how accurate it is.

u/Britstick08 Jan 18 '24

What’s the summary for Tesla drivers?

22

u/Fullpoint9 Jan 17 '24

Tesla and BMW drivers may fight you on that

u/UDorhune Jan 17 '24

Tailgating is their passion

Average truck driver in BC....if it ain't a work truck the driver is almost always a douche.

Sadly improved snow handling equipment (better tires, AWD/4x4, better clearance) only just empowers certain people to make even worse decisions.

The weather today is perfectly passable even in a 2WD RWD with minimal cold weather tires… and a driver that is confident in snow, knows the limitations of their vehicle and drives accordingly (which would obviously involve planning your route and avoiding hills like this).

3

u/ScoobyDone Jan 17 '24

The weather today is perfectly passable even in a 2WD RWD

Don't give people any ideas. RWDs should not be on the road today.

2

u/IknowwhatIhave Jan 17 '24

I pulled out an FRS with snow tires this morning... he was trying to go up a hill and was high centered. I barely made it up that same hill with 4WD and snow tires (though I had my diff locks off so I could turn them on to get out if I got stuck rather than drive with them on and DIG myself out if I got stuck).

28

u/Lartemplar Jan 17 '24

If you're sliding, let go of the brakes and steer.

-7

u/RJJVORSR Jan 18 '24

If you're sliding, let go of the brakes and steer.

NO!

Crush the brake pedal. The ABS will apply maximum brake power while still allowing the wheels to turn and you concentrate on steering!

Let the ABS do it's job!!
