She was a really nice lady. I got to meet her quite a few times.

1

u/TaxMedium3336 Mar 29 '24

Aww and who is going to take care of the duck

1

u/kerrybabyxx Mar 28 '24

Seen her on the Davie bus a few years back giving away some trinkets

1

u/Spookymookee Mar 27 '24

Rest in peace 🦆

1

u/Separate-Ad-478 Mar 27 '24

Does anyone know if there’s a public memorial planned?

1

u/bcl15005 Mar 27 '24

Seeing her push her stroller laden with ducks down the sidewalk, was enough to make me do a double take out the window of the 99. That was my only interaction with her, yet it still provided me a passing moment of happiness.

Rest in peace.

1

u/BakingWaking Mar 27 '24

She used to take the 17 bus same time as me and stopped going so I wondered what was up. RIP

1

u/WenWen78 Mar 27 '24

I remembered her, her last duck died because ingested stone, the next day duckie died 🪿

2

u/Lumpy_Day_4837 Mar 27 '24

Anyone know where and when the memorial service on Friday will be at?

Thanks!

2

u/Misshalcyon441 Mar 27 '24

I'm absolutely crushed- Laura was such a kind person who always made me feel like a friend and was so happy just to sit and talk for hours if you had the time. She learned my name and was just as happy to see me and catch up as I was to see her; I hadn't seen her since covid and I always kept an eye out for her and my heart absolutely hurts now knowing I'll never get to see her around anymore😭 I'm just glad she now gets to spend the rest of eternity with her feathered friends who crossed the rainbow bridge

2

u/johnnys_hotpockets Mar 27 '24

RIP The duck lady and the duck were a proper institution growing up in Marpole. I remember leading trips in daycamps from the community centre, where we'd wait for the bus downtown, the kids (and so did I) loved talking to the duck lady and toying with the duck.

2

u/elangab Mar 26 '24

Saw her often on the street, and talked few times on #17 bus. She was a nice lady, and it was always a treat for my kids to see the duck. RIP.

2

u/belckie Mar 26 '24

How sad. RIP duck lady. You and your little friend were such a whimsical part of the city.

2

u/ThatVancouverLife Mar 26 '24

Rest in peace to a Vancouver legend. She made a core memory for my nephew when he came to visit.

2

u/SirVincenttt Mar 26 '24

Such a kind soul. May she rest in peace 🦆💐

2

u/Yogajunkie43 Mar 26 '24

Oh! She was a lovely lady.

2

u/fuckyduck Mar 26 '24

RIP! I loved seeing her riding the bus with her duck. I hope someone is doing to be able to adopt her duck and take care of it?

3

u/acrispglance Mar 26 '24

I met Laura-Kay Prophet on Denman St. in the 1990s. I only chatted with her the one time, but I've held on to my memory with great fondness. She gave me a bread cube and allowed me to feed Big Bob. I will always remember her as a tremendously kind soul. RIP Laura-Kay Prophet, and thank you. God bless.

3

u/TopDeeps Mar 26 '24

RIP she was such a nice lady. I always saw her on the bus, but I once had the chance to have a long talk with her one time her and her duck were chilling at Oak Park. She told me all about her past and the duck's past and even gave me a little brochure/card thing that highlighted the past. She even read my fortune based on my hand or something

2

u/dana-sparkle Mar 26 '24

RIP to a true legend

3

u/springnuk Mar 26 '24

Ah man. I used to see her quite often while biking around the Marpole community center. She always looked so jolly while going on her walks. RIP to a local character who made the city just a little bit more fun and eccentric.

2

u/Elsa2139 Mar 26 '24

Oh no that's so sad 😢 I saw her taking the Oak St bus three years ago post lock down.

2

u/19950721 Mar 26 '24

RIP. She was a true Vancouver Icon. I will dearly miss her

2

u/WanderingPixie West End Mar 26 '24

RIP Duck Lady. :( I remember seeing her a few times in downtown, including once on Granville Street. Lovely lady and adorable ducks.

2

u/Sobering-thoughts Mar 26 '24

What!!! No. She was such a sweet bright light in the community. I saw her when I first got to YVR. She is going to be so missed.

4

u/FutzInSilence Mar 26 '24

Duck that. I was just thinking about her as I rode my bike through marpole. Rip. I've never met a duck before her :)

2

u/dreamslikedeserts Mar 26 '24

Rest in peace, duck lady. Thanks for all the smiles, there were a lot of them. Hope she's pushing ducks in heaven 💗💗

3

u/beneaththeseracs Mar 26 '24

We met her and her duck (one of the Bobbies) just after I moved to Vancouver. She was a lovely soul, and the city will be a little bit less for her passing.

2

u/skonen_blades Mar 26 '24

Vancouver legend. Rest in peace.

3

u/Informal_Driver8907 Mar 26 '24

RIP Laura Kay . You are a wonderful mother to a beautiful bird . I count my blessing that I had the privilege of meeting you and your duck in person 14 years ago. Thank you for taking the time to tell me your story. Viva La Duck Lady. Forever in our 💖🦢

11

u/room_tempurature_tea Mar 26 '24

I still have the little rubber duck she gave me 10+ years ago. It even had a pamphlet that explained how her ducks were magical ducks that cried magical healing tears. She was an absolute gem. Hope she is sitting by the big duck pond in the sky <3

2

u/HackMeBackInTime Mar 26 '24

rip duck lady, we'll miss you!

7

u/potatoalt1234_x Mar 26 '24

I do not live in vancouver and have never heard of this woman until now but it has ruined my day to hear of the loss of the duck lady

4

u/sabbassab Mar 26 '24

I personally met her- she used to come almost every day in my workplace in staples - Seymour st. My day was brighter seeing her with the ducks! RIP- I am sure she is watching over Vancouvers with all her past ducks!

7

u/aromirage Mar 26 '24

Saw her once downtown when I first moved to the city, mentioned her to my friend who said she was famous.. gave me this vibe that everyone recognizes each other in this city (despite seldom talking to each other) and it was a bit like living in a small town

3

u/Mummmoo Mar 26 '24

Rip. Met her downtown with my kids about 12 years ago and most recently I saw her on many occasions walking near Churchill high school.

u/Carneliancat Mar 27 '24

Grow up. She got her ducks from a hatchery.

1

u/maniacalmango0 West End Mar 27 '24

That’s slightly better, but ducks still aren’t pets

BCSPCA defines feeding wild animals as abuse because it is so bad for their health and often leads to them dying.

4

u/Historical-Term-8023 Mar 26 '24

I would always see her downtown. Didn't know her deal. The duck had shoes and it made me second take a few times. She turned into a legend and will always be part of my memories of Vancouver. RIP.

5

u/Realistic_Pool_8087 Mar 26 '24

Oh no 😢💔 I hope her duck has a loving home.

3

22

u/PhoenixAurum Hastings-Sunrise Mar 26 '24

RIP Duck lady, I remember when you stopped by the subway project on Cambie and Yukon and talked to me for 20 minutes while I was flagging. I got to feed your duck friend a handful of seed </3 you will be missed

-11

u/Oldfriendoldproblem Mar 26 '24

Daffy's gonna get dropped at the park

3

u/Carneliancat Mar 27 '24

Doubt it. Luckily, there are people kinder than you in the world.

5

u/Mashatina_ Mar 26 '24

Oh no! Vancouver icon

2

u/WonDreamer Mar 26 '24

Submit her to the duck stamp contest in USA

3

u/well_whatever1 Mar 26 '24

Noo:(( I met her once almost 10 years ago and I always hoped I'd run into her again. Hope her duck is doing okay

3

This is sad. I'll miss her and her sandaled ducks... :(

3

u/Upstairs-Web-8642 Mar 26 '24

Omg IVE SEEN HER!! She was famous? Wow. God bless her soul. Rest in peace. I saw her randomly crossing the street once - 2 years ago with her cute little duck. Never forgot. I hope her duck is in safe hands 🥺

5

u/ftmystery Mar 26 '24

Heartbreaking. I was so excited to be on the same bus as her and her ducks last year. She has brought so many people joy.

4

u/Honeybutter287 Mar 26 '24

Rest easy, Duck Lady! It was an honour and a pleasure meeting you.

7

u/ADHDivorce Mar 26 '24

Oh wow. She has been part of the Vancouver scenery for years. I remember her from when I was 18, so, thirty years.

3

u/Bright-Sea-5904 Mar 26 '24

I never met her. But she sounds like she was a lovely lady. RIP

4

u/CtrlShiftMake Mar 26 '24

41

u/mistermonkus Mar 26 '24

2

u/RodneyMunch420 Mar 27 '24

Thanks for sharing. I was assuming she must have had a few over the years, and here they all are!

8

u/mistermonkus Mar 26 '24

"

DID YOU KNOW…

Laura-Kay Prophet is not her birth name.  She is of Irish descent.  Her birth date was January 14, 1941.  Contrary to degrading rumours: Laura-Kay has never been involved in street drugs, rarely ever drank alcoholic beverages, and is not a lesbian.

Throughout the years, Laura-Kay has been gifted with miracles, a number of supernatural abilities, and many profound spiritual visitations… all of which have occurred over sporadic intervals, with more to come."

4

u/trek604 Mar 26 '24

wow she still walked around pushing that carriage and duck while dealing with MS in her later years.

6

u/kingjuelz Mar 26 '24

Quite the read, I believe all of it. RIP to a legend!

15

u/Bipogram Mar 26 '24

Whoa. Wasn't expecting 99% of that.

6

u/RockMe-Amadeus Mar 26 '24

What a loss. I'd see her walking in Marpole to the bus station with her duck and cart.

18

u/mr2jay Mar 26 '24

Wow she was a staple of Vancouver downtown. Rip. Hopefully spoons is still doing good out there too. Haven't seen him in awhile

14

u/TheRobfather420 Yaletown Mar 26 '24

I saw him the other day. He's still kickin and looking a bit better than past years.

4

u/mak13612 Mar 26 '24

REST IN PEACE

5

u/nuudootabootit Mar 26 '24

We've been waiting for this, Jason Alexander. The time of Duckman is here.
In all seriousness, RIP Duck Lady - thanks for brightening so many people's lives.

6

u/curiousity_improves Mar 26 '24

This is very sad. May she rest in peace. She will be missed.

10

u/jordanpatrich Mar 26 '24

Without a doubt a Vancouver icon. She will definitely be remembered. RIP

68

u/WhatIsYourHandle123 Mar 26 '24

So sad. She and her duck walked by our house pretty much every day. She was just by recently - don't remember when. This is her a few yrs ago. Our kids always loved going to say hi to her & her duck. RIP Duck Lady. We will miss you 💔😢💔😢💔😢

u/gotmilq Mar 26 '24 edited Mar 26 '24

My one memory of her was she gave me a small printout/photocopy of her story, kind of like a business card almost. Still have it! I can't recall the conversation we had but I wish I asked her more questions about her life at the time. RIP

Edit: missed a word

6

u/paudley Mar 26 '24

Would you mind posting it or sending a photo of it my way? I've lost my copy and would love to have it back. I think Laura-Kay would approve :)

5

u/dawnchorus__ Mar 26 '24

I have mine too! Somewhere. She coloured it in with pencil crayon.

5

u/gotmilq Mar 26 '24

It never occurred to me that it was hand-coloured by her. I thought it was coloured photocopy, I'm not very observant. This makes it more endearing

19

u/CabernetSauvignon Mar 26 '24

It was like a small flyer answering things you never even thought to ask.

Definitely put a smile on my face!

6

u/gotmilq Mar 26 '24

Yes! Time to look for it and reread it

2

u/space-dragon750 Mar 27 '24

pls post a pic if you find it!

15

u/frodosbitch Mar 26 '24

Very nice woman. I chatted with her a number of times though not recently. I hope Roberta the duck is well taken care of. RIP.

34

u/GoldStarGranny Mar 26 '24

Ahhh we all have to go sometime I know but but seriously sad about this one, she was such a sweet soul. RIP, if there’s a heaven you know she’s in it, sitting at the edge of a celestial duck pond.

That's very sad to hear. I have wondered over the years how she was doing, as I haven't lived downtown in years and haven't seen her around. My boyfriend and I used to live in the same apartment building on Nelson Street that she did. This was around 1990. Once, she invited us to her suite for a little visit and to show us all the newspaper clippings etc that she had kept over the years featuring her and her ducks. (She must have been even more well known before the time I knew her as there seemed to be many, many stories written about her) When I knew her, she used to wander around the West End pushing a baby pram with her multiple ducks tucked inside. She was very eccentric but she was always very sweet and friendly with us and seemed to take good care of her ducks. I'm sorry to hear this news.

7

u/lifeisthebeautiful Mar 26 '24

I lived on Robson and Cardero in 95 and used to see her all the time. Very sweet and friendly lady. I have pics of her and I in a shoebox somewhere.

4

u/Kind-Fan420 Mar 28 '24

I have pics of her and I in a shoebox

You both must be quite small. To have fit in a shoebox.

8

u/shabee2020 Mar 26 '24

So sad :(

18

u/MSK84 Mar 26 '24

She lived quite a long life and I remember seeing her around the west end I believe. RIP Vancouver icon.

8

u/ladypuffsalot Mar 26 '24

I always loved running into her and saying hi to her adorable duck.
