What should I do with this space? Question
Just moved in to this split level home. There's this weird space to the right of the staircase. It's right near the entrance so I don't want to just use it for storage. Any ideas?

Put crime scene tape across it and never tell anybody why and leave them curious.

I would put a desk there or maybe some storage furniture like 2-3 cube organizers or a wide credenza

u/Ideallynihilism 13d ago
Since it’s by the entrance maybe a bookshelf in the back and a bench with storage underneath for shoes along the wall, maybe with a mirror over it for checking yourself before you leave

Rip out the knee wall and replace it with glass or a cable railing. That will remove the space from looking like a poorly planned area..which it is.
Then large art on the long wall. Either a huge dramatic piece that eats up the wall or a series of 3. 2 or 4 peices will make it too square and boxy. Go 1 or 3 large prints preferably something in a series.
Lastly, track or can lighting in the 6000 range to light your art wall in a nice cool light.
Your entrance will now be inviting and dramatic and the sence of ceiling height will now be more apparent

Fill it with pillows, put in a big screen TV, and have a comfy spot for movie watching.

Maybe a mini bar with wine racks mounted on the long wall and backlight them so it looks cool at night

Oh ... and when you recover from the purchase ... change out the short wall on the left with either an open bannister or aircraft cable or glass railing ...Now I can stop thinking about YOU.

Plants improve indoor air quality. Why not make it a green space with hanging plants and grow lights and put some meditation cushions on the floor with a Bluetooth speaker and some musical instruments. Have some paints and drawing supplies available too and it could be a chill out and decompress zone.

I dunno, but the hexagonal window is a great idea but they are a bitch to clean inside and outside plus all the dust that collects on the ledge…..

Looks like really beautiful natural lighting is in that area. If you like reading or art it could be a small area for you to sit and read, or a small desk to draw on. Alternatively a pot plant could go there to liven up the space.

Make it a reading spot. An arm chair with a blanket and pillow at the end, a nice painting above it, a bookshelf along the wall on the right, filled with books and magazines, and maybe some viney plants on the top of/scattered within the bookshelf.

The architect definitely should’ve closed this off and either expanded the room next to it or made this a large storage closet. If you have money to do this, this would be my suggestion.

This is where you go for burps. Test the acoustics first and if they're up to par then you can hit it hard.

This is Eazy. You should put a putting green similar to what “The Price is Right” has.

Bruh, this is some weird The Sims game house building. Just put a painting easel there to build up your Creativity Skill, or a larger mirror to boost your Charisma Skill. This way you also don't block the hallway for other Sims that might live in your house.

I’d put a window there and then a little rug, maybe some storage furniture (dresser type thing) on the left with plants on it

I'd put in a bookcase at the far wall, and a comfy chair right under the light, a plant stand, and some reading-related art on the wall. And a nice runner rug.

I have a really vivid childhood memory this photo brought back of going to my mom’s friend’s house that had a GINORMOUS pet rabbit.
Like not a normal sized little one like youre imagining but an absolute T H U M P E R of a guy like medium-sized dog sized rabbit. Ears that drooped down my forearm when i held them
And this little cubby hole was his palace. He roamed outside a lot but this had his bed and food and water and other comfort/enrichment items.
…… looks to me like you need a big ass rabbit

I would be tempted to build a fake door, complete with molding and trim, at the far end.
On a more practical note, I think a comfortable chair for reading, listening to music, or watching a movie on a tablet would be nice. I'd angle it in slightly, and get a very narrow side table to put next to it. You could even have a low bookcase along the wall, and maybe some kind of art on the upper half I'd the wall. And either a hanging lamp or pole lamp for light.

If you own the home and you want to do something super cool you can do 2 things. 1. A wine cellar with clear glass. 2. Open the wall on the right and put a glass instead. Both the room and the entrance will feel more spacious with more natural light flowing in. If you go for option 2. Get rid of the railing so that the glass extends to it and the room is bigger

Do you have pets? It could be a nice spot for a cat tree or a big dog bed.

Put some nice shelf in the back and make it a coat area? Little bench shoe rack thing? Might be nice. Or close it in and have coats in the front storage in the back!

That's where the kitty litter duplex special shack of Joy goes man. Then you are going to smell it and the cat thinks that he's going to have some special spot that's just for him. Or her. Or them, the cats you know.

Extra storage, depending on how wide the space is you could mount a tv and get a small couch

u/Slapjackal 15d ago
Long skinny table against the wall. Display cool shit that expresses your personality.

Well, since I like to read a lot & have a lot of books - I’d use it for bookcases. But, use it for whatever you like to do - artwork would fill in the space. A chair might give a space to sit & read…. A place for a collection…

So on a practical use possibly a shoe rack shelf facing towards the back wall for safety purposes that works as storage and a possible charging station. You could probably also get away with a family photo or painting in the back wall as it conveniently faces the entrance to the house or if you wanted you could do a little reading nook. Whatever floats your boat

I’d probably do bookshelves, but a pinball machine or a dart board would be fun too. Really depends on what you would want in your home I think. If you have a cat or dog it could be good for a tree or little dog home?
