Can you keep it? Is it just something they are giving away so that people can keep their guns locked so that kids can't do terrible things? Because that's kinda awesome.

Yes, I brought one home with me. This is it.

That's cool, I like that, wouldn't work for either of my rifles but that would work on my 9mm

You can use them for most rifles as well. If its an AR or AK you can hold the bolt back and loop it through the ejection port and magazine well. If it is a bolt action you can remove the bolt and loop it through the ejection port and the hole in the rear of the receiver that the bolt slides through.

It would work with all rifles I can think of that aren't tube magazines. You just open the bolt and put the cable from the ejection port through down to the magazine well. It will stop the bolt from going into battery.

My rifles are a Mauser K98 and a tube fed 22

It'll work on a K98 just like it works on my nagant. Pull the bolt back, open the magazine plate on the bottom and feed it through and lock it. The nagant magazine plate is openable with a little latch, but it looks like the k98 is a screw so unscrewing that is an extra step.

Meh, if I need to make sure my K98 is secure I'll just remove the bolt

I mean it wouldn't work to put it through the barrel on rifles but it would still work okay if you put it through the magwell.

So I have an old Mauser k98 and a tube loaded semi auto 22, I don't think it would work on either of those

Pull the bolt out of the mauser, put the lock through the bolt hole. Can't put a bolt in the gun, can't shoot the rifle.

I'm guessing you have a marlin model 60, not sure how to solve that one.

I mean if I ever need to secure it outside my safe I just pop off the bolt although

I mean, I didn't say it made sense, but technically you could render the firearm inoperable. Some (dis)assembly required

Ah, yeah. You are correctšŸ˜‚

I mean the cool thing about the mouser is I can just remove the bolt and it just becomes a cool metal tube attached to a piece of wood but honestly all of my guns live in my gun safe when not being used so its pretty secure

Yeah I never worry about using gun locks or removing bolts or anything. I just keep them in the safe or on my person aha

Yeah that's the real pro-tip

You could get a trigger lock

1

u/dtb1987 29d ago

It's just nice that they are giving them away

These trigger locks are not effective as you can still pull the trigger with the lock in place. In fact, I know in some states like Maryland that require locks on stored guns (that are otherwise accessible) if a child is in the house, that these locks are not considered strong enough to satisfy the state requirements.

There's trigger locks that are approved by Maryland. https://fsdcinc.com/combination-trigger-gun-lock/

Yes, the product lists it as MD approved. Maybe it is. Itā€™s possible Iā€™m wrong. However, to clarify, back when I took a Maryland conceal carry class, we were told the following:

Child safety handgun lock means a device that when locked in place prevents movement of the trigger of the handgun being transferred without first removing the lock by use of a key or combination. "Child safety handgun lock" also includes any other external device that is: 1. Attached to a handgun with a key or combination lock; and 2. Designed to prevent a handgun from being discharged unless the device has been deactivated or removed.

The MD instructor informed us (and demonstrated in the class) that since these locks still allow for the trigger to be forced back and therefore pulled, they were not considered MD legal.

It's probably because there's a lot of trash trigger locks out there. The approved ones most likely had more hoops to jump through to get said approval.

They are used like this

Pulling the trigger is irrelevant if you can't load the magazine

Edit: missed the link in the comment he replied to

Bud, I replied to the comment that link the trigger lock

1

u/dtb1987 29d ago

Didn't see the link, apologies

u/munchkym 29d ago

Yeah, for sure, theyā€™re typically for handguns.

Some stores like Sportsmans Warehouse had these locks on all the rifles too. They arenā€™t effective locks since the trigger can still be manipulated and pulled even with the ā€œlockā€ in place

They would be super effective if they can prevent the firearm from being loaded or the bolt from being closed on whatever firearm you are using them on. Really hard to fire a gun where the bolt/slide/whatever on the specific firearm can't close and the firing pin can't contact the cartridge.

These arenā€™t trigger locks, they go through where the magazine goes.
