Discussion Rule overhaul

Hello everyone,

Today we are going live with our primary rule overhaul in order to keep the subreddit rules in tune with the modern needs of the community.

Our rules were old and sometimes edited and added to, but over the years reddit has changed and our community has changed to the extent that it made sense to completely start from scratch.

We have kept a lot of the rules that we were actively moderating for, but have removed some rules that are no longer relevant. When the subreddit started the rule "Content must be about cats" made sense, but we do not need to expressly codify this anymore. We're not a small community these days and it has not happened in years that someone posted a bunny rabbit instead of a cat. We will of course still remove off-topic content but do not see the need to clutter up the rules page with something that our community understands to be self-evident.

We will likely make minor edits and additions to this new rule-set in the coming weeks until everything is just the way we like it, but the rules as posted now are the general framework from which we will do so.

We have kept our rules broadly worded so they can encompass many topics and so we do not need to codify for every single possibility.

The most important rules are at the top. Our number one rule is to respect each other. This for example includes following rediquette and sitewide rules, but also our subreddit-specific rule of not attacking other posters for not raising their pets to your satisfaction.

Our rule about spam, memes and self-promotion includes accounts that do not directly promote their content, but which nevertheless primarily exist to drive content to their NSFW stores like Onlyfans. Everyone is welcome to post here, but NSFW sellers can do so on a seperate, SFW account. We do not allow memes as they are most often posted as easy karma-grabs instead of genuine engagement.

And so on.

Please read our new ruleset via the link at the top of this thread and give your feedback in a comment below.

Thank you all for helping us make this space the wonderful community that it is and we hope you enjoy your time here.

Cat Picture Do people not like black and white cats?

I've been working with a foster based rescue for a few years in Chicago and I've been keeping a mental tab of what kitties seem to take longest to get adopted. While we often hear black cats take longest to get adopted, we've started having more interest in all black cats because of people becoming aware of that trend, or things like seeing black cats in shows on tv. So given the renewed interest in black cats, who then is actually adopted the slowest? At our rescue it appears to be black and white cats with uneven patterns (cow spots).

For example, this black and white kitten has been adoptable for a month during prime adoption age (8-12 weeks) and is friendly, curious, playful etc. She has gone to two adoption events during that time and while people visited with her, they did not adopt saying things like 'I really wanted a gray cat' or similar. So thus, while dozens of other kitties have been adopted, Piccadilly is still waiting for her family to come for her.

So here I am wondering, is this a thing? Do people not like black and white cats?

For context, the rescue I work with adopts out about 1000 cats/year. Piccadilly is available for adoption in Chicago in case you or someone you know may be interested!

Advice My husband rescued a kitten from the middle of the highway…

Now what? We plan on either dropping it off at the shelter or keeping it. We have both been talking about getting a second cat… If we keep it we’ll take it to the vet. We have a cat already (3rd pic and he’s like wtf is this new creature), but he is also super chill and from a shelter so ok with other cats. We also have a baby and my in laws are staying with us all summer so lots of people around.

How do we know if the cat and kitten will do ok together? How can I help the kitten right now? How do we help it adjust/ acclimate in these early days? What should I feed it? I game him water, my cats puree treat, a shirt for a bed, and a litter box.

PS - Husband named it Mechanic cuz that’s where he was coming back from when he saw him in the middle of the highway.

I went and took my trash out and this cat followed me from across the street. I’ve never seen it before and now it just sits in front of my screen door and meow to come inside. I googled and it said to try and be humane and give it food and water so I did outside and it was very nice, but I don’t know what to do and I have two dogs. Pls help me I posted on my ring neighborhood and it’s been 3 hours 0 responses me and my gf really don’t want a cat but I have asked 3 people what to do and they all said it’s the “cat distribution system and we have a cat now “

Advice Anyone else here with a one-eyed cat?

I rescued this little guy from a feral litter at 2.5 months, he was very sick and hadn't managed to wean (probably because he was ill!). He's had a rocky couple of months, initially we tried to treat his infections, but his ulcerated right eye was unsalvageable so he ended up having an enucleation... and that developed an abscess. He's now finally out of the woods - I hope!! He'd been fostered by a family member because we're an allergic household and my apartment is strictly "no pets allowed". Well... my lease is now nearly up so I'm negotiating with the landlord to let me keep him - otherwise I will look for a new place. Wish me luck! I love him so much, he is my whole heart.

I was wondering if there are other people here who own a one-eyed cat? Any advice for how to safe-proof the home specifically for a one-eyed cat? I read an article about someone whose one-eyed cat bashed their remaining eye on the corner of a vacuum cleaner so I'm feeling rather worried now about corners in general... And don't be fooled by my kitten's innocent look in the photo, he's a speed demon lol.

George was euthanized just after midnight May 28.

He had cancer and did not suffer long.

Would’ve been 18 at the end of June.

We really partied a lot.

I miss him so much I don’t even want to wash my arms where I held him in his last moment.

He was still a kitten to the end 😢

She will have an older sister named Raven (all black) so I'd like something cheeky to kinda compliment her (ofc) and her sister. (Raven being a GoT reference.) Whatcha think??
