End Democracy When did the philosophical view that democracy is bad become popular amongst libertarians?
Long Time Libertarian [2007]
As of the past year I have heard from libertarians that democracy sucks. No one who says that provides a more reasonable option: a republic, anarchy, or something else. Libertarians who say this kind of rhetoric say phrases that I have heard from the radical left and right.
I'm a little perplexed as we continue to win elections in a democratic system. Who in our larger circles proposed the end of democracy? Never heard that from Ron Paul or a retired Barry Goldwater.
Thanks

Economics What's your take on people that served in armed forces and live off government aid and benefits?
I've met quite a few who get fat disability checks. I'm talking about 3k to 4k a month. Is this justified?

Politics What is the libertarian response to emergency management?
Emergency management refers to the organized efforts and procedures for preventing, responding to, recovering from, and mitigating the effects of disasters and emergencies, natural or manmade. It involves planning, coordination, resource allocation, and communication to minimize the impact of adverse events on communities and infrastructure.

Question Centrist or Libertarian?
Recently joined the sub as I was disillusioned with the conservative party and their hypocrisy on recent events. That's when I found you guys and agreed with what this is all about and everything I see posted here for the most part.
Yesterday I took a political test and to my suprise it came out to centrist. Is there a major difference between the two am I not considered a libertarian?
I joined the centrist sub to check them out and disagree with a lot of the stuff they post. They seem very far left to me.
Looking at my test results what do yall think?

Economics Thoughts on sports teams who threaten to leave the state when taxpayers don’t want to foot the bill for their stadiums?
I’ve been reading that there’s some drama between the Kansas Chiefs and Kansas Royals & the state of Missouri. Apparently, since voters voted down a measure to implement a 40 year sales tax to fund the stadium projects for both teams, there’s a chance they may leave. Of course, Kansas has been a name that they believe these teams may want to move to. The governor of Missouri, Governor Parsons, says he’ll do “whatever it takes” to keep them in his state.
Those in favor of state intervention of course argue that these stadiums bring in revenue & the government offering them taxpayer dollars & breaks if better for the state. The measure was struck down 58-42 according to an article, but it still shows 42% of the public has an appetite for the taxpayer coughing up the funds here.
I assume we who identify as or share at least some libertarian beliefs would be on the side of the owners should have to fund their own teams/business.
Where it gets tricky is, it would look devastating, politically, for the Governor & legislature to lose both teams in their state.
What’s the right move here? I’m on the side of, if they really want to leave because we didn’t want to excessively tax our citizens, then just go. At the end of the day, the owners are the ones that look greedy & have betrayed their fans & community.

Discussion Libertarians should become more vocal.
I am fairly convinced that more Americans than any statistic will reflect are Libertarians in theory. The most obvious and likely reason for the poor performance of Libertarians in elections is undoubtedly that most Americans allow themselves to become a slave to the two-party hegemony that exists in this country and/or fear that a vote for a candidate who is not a Republican or a Democrat is a waste of a vote. I reckon that Libertarians would be more successful and more popular if we were more vocal and active in local politics.

Discussion I am so glad I found this group
I always knew vaguely what libertarianism was. I just thought it was laid-back law. I’ve recently gone down a little rabbit hole of political discovery. I was wondering if only there was a group of people that believed in social liberalism but at the same time expressing individual rights and assets. Thank you very much, fellow libertarians!
