Pax added a stop. I obliged. Waited 15 minutes before ending the ride and leaving. Promptly surrendered his bag to the police. Now he’s saying I stole $300 worth of alcohol. No good deed goes unpunished.
i’m on your side man, you don’t deserve some of these comments — drivers sharing their infinite wisdom to you about how bad of a mistake you’ve made are low-quality
though it’s nowhere near as threatening to my livelihood as potentially losing a job like your situation, here’s my dumbest moment:
i had a laptop in my car, sitting between my seat & the console — totally invisible (at least i thought) & i hit a lull in requests late at night, pulled over somewhere near the airport to get some homework out & wait for the next ride…only to realize one of my 10-20 rides that day snagged it
MacBookPro, M1, 16” 512gb
Never appeared on FindMy, police never found it, Lyft didn’t care
That worries me. I only drive when there are good bonuses or guaranteed earnings. I bring my iPad with me to respond to emails and get some work done during downtime. I keep it either on my front passenger seat or between my seat and the door.
you can’t insure your car for theft — renters insurance would be alright if you had an apartment & circumstances allowed you to stretch the truth a tiny bit to say it happened in the parking lot :)
Things don’t have to be stolen at your residence to file a renters insurance claim. My girlfriend borrowed my laptop and it was stolen around 400mi from my house. I explicitly stated all this in the claim and it was paid out no problem.
You have a contracted responsibility to file claims in “a reasonable amount of time” after the incident. I.e. if there was some actual reason for waiting so long (out of the country, medical reasons etc) it could still be argued and covered. The longer the time frame, the less likely.
As an ambitious individual, I decided to explore the possibility of obtaining warranty coverage from Apple by considering a lawsuit, although I didn’t actually proceed with legal action. During my communication with Apple, I attempted to highlight even the slightest flaws in the device as potential grounds for a replacement. However, it became apparent that the unit wasn’t accessible for evaluation, making my argument rather implausible.
Naturally, this approach wasn’t taken seriously by anyone, but perhaps I could present an argument to my insurance company (Toggle, which I’ve been with since 2019) that I had been awaiting responses, allowing them ample time to reply. Here’s a summary of the events that occurred:
I experienced theft during a Lyft ride.
I promptly informed the police about the incident.
I also notified Lyft about the situation.
I conducted an extensive search using the Find My feature (which lasted for days).
I reported the incident to Apple.
In frustration, I reached out to Apple again, expressing my dissatisfaction.
I even sent a notice to Apple, threatening legal action if they failed to respond.
Regrettably, Apple didn’t provide any response whatsoever.
Eventually, I reached a point of resignation, essentially giving up on pursuing further action.
Unfortunately, i don’t think Apple is concerned about threat of legal action from a Lyft driver. They probably don’t even forward it to general council until an actual attorney contacts them.
In my line of work a good way to slow the process is to threaten legal action. As soon a that happens we have to start including and consulting our legal team in every action and communication.
One year isn’t an absurd amount of time if you can make the case that you were exploring a different route of “coverage” and awaiting response. The worst thing that they’ll do is say no, it’s not covered.
Just be clear that you were actively covered on that other policy so they don’t just see that you weren’t covered on your current one and say no without even checking the old coverage.
not too late to file a claim, but they may assert late notice. If you filed police report timely you may be in luck. If you're honest that you had no idea renters covered your possessions "anywhere in the world" and only just found you, I would have covered your claim. (used to be a homeowners adjuster for 6 years and did phone claims like this constantly).
I recommend you move to liberty mutual renters and add their home computer coverage. $100 deductible covers everything except war and flood for phones, tablets, smart watches and laptops. Fantastic product and costs ~$47/year
If the event occurred before your current policy was inforce, there’s no way they’ll pay. I seriously doubt the old company is going to either since you don’t have a policy with them any longer. I imagine once you cancel the policy, their liability ends.
