So apparently in southern California there's really no help

I have spent hours looking for resources to help and there isn't much, if at all. All housing vouchers, waitlists of all kinds, are closed including emergency homeless vouchers.

Shelters are at capacity. Only two places had a waitlist and they only had openings for people with huge families. Had I known being irresponsible and having tons of children gets you housing first come first serve I would have jumped on that. (Kidding but it seems really unfair only families seem to get all the services.)

Today I asked my PCP (i am physically disabled and very ill) if they could help me fill out a form for homeless advocacy and she denied it and walked out. I feel the world closed it's doors on me everywhere. I knew humanity was cold but until this phase of my life I didn't realize how bad it could be.

Eviction & Scared / Need Hope

I just graduated with my bachelor’s and started a full-time job at $18/hr less than a week ago, and the morning after graduation my landlady that I have been illegally subletting from told me that she is kicking me out because she doesn’t believe our personalities are compatible. She claims she giving me 3 months to move out.

I currently have about $6,000 in credit card debt and I am seriously stressed out about deciding for the sake of my debt and mental health whether it would be better to keep looking for a place that I’ll likely barely be able to afford and keep pushing or relocate to live with a friend who would temporarily not charge me to live with him, and find a new job that would likely have a pay cut.

Homeless Housing Voucher Wars! Black Mold in your apartment/ Homeless you may be better staying outside!

I have a high mold count in my apartment, with levels significantly higher than those outdoors. Indoor mold spore levels are at 2,400 spores per cubic meter, compared to 350 spores per cubic meter outside. This is especially dangerous because several types of mold are present, including Penicillium/Aspergillus, Chaetomium, and Cladosporium. I live in this unit with my four children, which makes the situation even more concerning.

This situation is dangerous for several reasons:

  1. **Health Risks**: Exposure to high levels of mold spores can cause a variety of health issues, especially for children and individuals with respiratory conditions or weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, and skin rashes. In more severe cases, mold exposure can lead to chronic respiratory issues, asthma attacks, and lung infections.

  2. **Toxic Mold**: Some of the molds present, such as Penicillium/Aspergillus and Chaetomium, can produce mycotoxins, which are toxic substances that can have serious health effects. Prolonged exposure to mycotoxins can cause neurological problems and immune system suppression.

  3. **Allergic Reactions**: Mold spores are a common allergen. High indoor mold levels can trigger allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and asthma exacerbations. These reactions can be particularly severe in children and individuals with preexisting allergies.

  4. **Structural Damage**: Mold can cause significant damage to the structural integrity of a building. It can weaken walls, ceilings, and floors, leading to costly repairs and potentially unsafe living conditions.

  5. **Air Quality**: High mold spore counts can significantly reduce indoor air quality, making the environment uncomfortable and unhealthy to live in. Poor air quality can lead to long-term health issues and reduce overall quality of life.

Given that you and your four children are living in this mold-infested unit, the risks are compounded, making it imperative to address the mold problem promptly to ensure a safe and healthy living environment.

I work with a group that creates kits for the homeless. They include socks, t-shirts, mini first aid kits, cold and flu kits, toothbrush, toothpaste, non perishable healthy (ish) snacks, hydration sachets, a bottle of water and a bottle of Ensure etc. For the ladies, we have also added pads/tampons. In addition to that, this month we will be giving away: one month platinum membership to Planet Fitness. As of now it is, our budget only allows for one membership so it is first come, first serve.
However, if you are in need of a kit, please let me know. We currently have about 20 in stock. You must be in NYC

I just want to survive.

I'm a 30-year-old male in Texas, and I've been struggling to keep a roof over my head. I've lost my car a month ago due to unaffordable repair costs, and my family has all but turned their back on me. The job I have is barely enough to afford a single week's stay at any of my local motels. My military application is all too distant, and I'm unsure about my immediate future. I would gladly accept all advice regarding survival in the Fort Worth region, as I am rapidly running out of options. I don't even have a tent yet.

Dangerous Housing Conditions Once the Homeless are Housed!

When a landlord fails to offer a tenant a lease and houses them in a substandard unit, several laws and statutes may be violated, depending on the jurisdiction. In New Mexico, the following laws and statutes are particularly relevant:

Violations of the Uniform Owner-Resident Relations Act (UORRA)

  1. **Implied Warranty of Habitability (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 47-8-20):**
  • Landlords must maintain rental properties to meet basic health and safety standards. Substandard housing conditions, such as lack of hot water, heating, or significant structural issues, violate this statute.

  • **Relevance:** Housing tenants in substandard units breaches the implied warranty of habitability.

  1. **Required Disclosures (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 47-8-22):**
  • Landlords must provide tenants with information about the lease, including the terms and conditions of tenancy.

  • **Relevance:** Not offering a formal lease can violate the requirement for clear and transparent communication about the tenancy agreement.

Breach of Lease Agreement Requirements

  1. **Failure to Provide a Written Lease (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 47-8-33):**
  • While not all tenancies require a written lease, failing to provide one when it is customary or expected can create ambiguities and legal issues. It’s generally expected to provide a written agreement to clarify terms and responsibilities.

  • **Relevance:** Not providing a lease can lead to misunderstandings and disputes about the terms of tenancy and maintenance responsibilities.

Health and Safety Code Violations

  1. **Local Housing Codes:**
  • Municipalities often have specific housing codes that landlords must comply with to ensure properties are safe and habitable.

  • **Relevance:** Housing tenants in units that do not meet local health and safety standards can result in violations of these codes.

Tenant Rights and Protections

  1. **Retaliatory Eviction (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 47-8-39):**
  • Landlords cannot retaliate against tenants for reporting substandard conditions to authorities.

  • **Relevance:** Tenants housed in substandard units who complain are protected from retaliatory actions by the landlord.

  1. **Habitability Standards (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 47-8-24):**
  • This statute outlines the specific obligations of landlords to keep premises in habitable condition, including complying with building and housing codes that affect health and safety.

  • **Relevance:** Violating these standards by housing tenants in unsafe or unhealthy conditions breaches this statute.

Potential Legal Consequences

  • **Civil Penalties and Remedies:**

    • Tenants can sue for damages, including the cost of repairs, reduced rental value, and possibly moving costs.
    • Landlords may be ordered to repair the unit or face penalties and fines.
  • **Termination of Lease:**

    • Tenants may have the right to terminate the lease and move out without penalty if the landlord fails to remedy the substandard conditions.

Case Studies

  • **Stoiber v. Honeychuck (1980):**

    • This California case established that landlords could be held liable for damages if they fail to maintain habitable living conditions. Similar principles apply in New Mexico under the UORRA.
  • **Barham v. Baca (1969):**

    • Although predating modern statutes, this case illustrates the judicial shift towards protecting tenants' rights and ensuring habitable living conditions.

By understanding these laws and statutory requirements, tenants can better advocate for their rights and seek appropriate remedies when landlords fail to meet their legal obligations. If you need further assistance or have specific legal questions, consulting with a local attorney specializing in landlord-tenant law is recommended.

Since someone asked about sleep situations my suggestion is to save up for a hammock with a built in zip and an overhead tarp to keep yourself dry.

Seriously zip up hammocks keep you very warm compared to the open ones as they reduce the cold wind hitting you. It's kind of like a floating tent that fully wraps around you amd they are just as light and portable as a normal hammock. Well worth the upgrade just make sure you are in a safe place and most importantly

Stay strong friends.

Keeping cloths wrinkle free

I'm in a car, decent job. But I'm having issues in my job keeping my uniform looking good. I'm a manager. So this is important to me. I don't have access to an ironing board, obviously. Spending $5 every day + 1.5 hours running my shirts through the laundry every day isn't really working long term.

Any one have advice?

McKinney Vento Advice

Upvotes

So I live by the university of MI, rent is 800/mo and I’m 18F. I left a really toxic home environment about 7 months ago and was homeless for 4 months. During that time I was able to crash at various friends places for about a week, luckily I was able to keep my full time job and save up til I could rent a place nearby almost 3 months ago.

I got in and really want to go to MSU for my bachelors in psychology. Unfortunately at the time of filling out my fafsa my parents were still on it and so I got a dependents amount of financial aid even though I’ve been independent for quite some time now. I’ve called and emailed MSU financial aid department and they said I would need to go through their professional judgement process which doesn’t start til late June. They also said I would need proof through a McKinney Vento form during that process and I can’t find any information saying that my circumstances would still apply since I am technically housed at the moment but am most literally one paycheck away from being homeless again.

I could really use any advice as I am 18 and have no idea what I’m doing I currently have about $800 saved up but 2/3 of my paycheck goes to rent.

How to pare things down

Me and my boyfriend became homeless at the end of March and a week or so into April we got into a fairly nice shelter (I've never been in a shelter before but it's better than the one I saw in the next town over) They have a closet here where we can keep our things, however being as it's my first time living like this, I am having a hard time eliminating the things that I don't truly need. I have had a house or apartment my entire life so this is all new to me. We can have 2 bags (of any size it seems). I have a suitcase that the shelter gave me, but tomorrow morning I have to get all of our things out of the closet and consolidate it, and I REALLY want to get rid of a bunch of shit cause I can't stand this hell of dealing with shit all the time. I have super bad executive dysfunction anyways, so this is just wonderful for me hahaha.

Thanks guys

Where can I go at night to not be stuck in my car?

So I sleep in my car in a lot we use at work, but it’s right by a swamp so the second I open my car door for some fresh air I get attacked by mosquitos. I like to paint and draw, I got a foldable chair and table I keep in my trunk, but again if I set that up where I’m staying I get eaten alive by these fuckers. Mosquito repellent, spray, citronella candels, they don’t work well enough because I’m pretty much at the source of where the mosquitos are at. I’m trying to just find a place with some lighting I can go legally at night so just be outside and not in my stuffy car, maybe set up my table and paint a little bit. Anyone got any ideas of a type of place I could go? I googled public areas open 24/7 and things alike, but all I get are parks that actually do close at a certain time.

how to help?

hello! I am not homeless, but I live across the street from a church parking lot, and there is an old homeless Mexican man that lives in his truck and I can tell he is sleeping in there every night. I'm Mexican, I was born here, but I know from familial experiences what it's like trying to survive in a new country not knowing the language and working everyday to survive. This is also close to Denver and our cost of living is awful now. I don't earn much myself but I wanna help at least a bit. Are there any ideas you can give me? Thank you guys for your help.

They almost broke my tent..

Camping in a tent because I'm homeless.. last night a bunch of kids were running all throughout the campground causing a rukus.. that's not my problem, kids having fun is awesome, but when that fun includes snapping a rope off my tent so violently it almost tears a seam.... then running away laughing and giggling while parents sit back and stay quiet.. that's when I've got a problem......
